Analytics & Fiori with the Analysis Path FrameworkTobias Trapp
This document discusses using SAP Analytics for Fiori applications to perform flexible data analysis and visualization. It describes how the Analysis Path Framework (APF) allows defining data cubes from OData sources without coding by configuring filters and slicing and dicing operations. Typical use cases for APF are listed such as working capital analytics, results of automated processes, and workflow analysis. The technical setup involves using HANA for in-memory data, exposing calculation views or BW data as OData, and building Fiori apps with APF and Smart Business components on the Fiori frontend server.
ABAP Development in time of S/4 - Do's and Don'ts and Golden Rules for Simpli...Christian Lechner
This document provides recommendations for ABAP development for SAP S/4HANA. It recommends that developers read documentation to understand changes, clean up unused code, learn new extension mechanisms, make code compatible with S/4HANA, use modern ABAP practices, follow the S/4HANA programming model of data modeling, CDS views, BOPF and Fiori apps, and ensure the data model is high quality. It acknowledges challenges including some bleeding edge technology, limited information, harmonizing legacy and new concepts, and maintaining multiple code lines during a transformation.
This document provides an overview of different techniques for implementing the "code-to-data" paradigm in SAP HANA, including open SQL, core data services (CDS) views, and ABAP managed database procedures (AMDP). Open SQL allows pushing ABAP code down to the database level through SQL statements. CDS views define reusable data models at the database level. AMDPs allow writing database procedures directly in SQLScript that are executed at the database layer.
Daniel Ridder Best Practices SAP Gateway BuilderDaniel Ridder
This document provides best practices for modeling and implementing OData services using SAP Gateway Builder. It discusses modeling entities by importing DDIC structures and mapping data types. For service implementation, it recommends mapping entities whenever possible and extending mappings by redefining CRUD methods in the generated DPC class. It also covers namespaces, search helps, reusing services and OData types, and using SAP annotations.
This document discusses using Core Data Services (CDS) views in SAP ECC EHP7 on HANA. It provides examples of how CDS views can be used to perform unit conversions, set default dates, extract data for a BW report without ABAP, and read text fields. Tips are provided on when and how to use CDS views, including being careful with joins and specifying all key fields. The outlook discusses CDS becoming the common data model in S/4HANA.
Technical Overview of CDS View – SAP HANA Part IAshish Saxena
SAP HANA has introduced new paradigms to SAP ABAP application programming. Before SAP HANA, development paradigm in SAP was based on DATA-to-Code where intensive calculation was done at the application layer and database utilization was minimized. New programming paradigm in SAP HANA is Code-to-Data, where the intensive calculation is done at the database layer and less programming at application layer.
SAP HANA is an in-memory database platform that can be deployed on-premise or in the cloud. When deployed on-premise, SAP HANA combines software and hardware components optimized by SAP and its partners. In the cloud, SAP HANA is offered through managed services on infrastructure like SAP HANA One. To take advantage of SAP HANA's high-speed processing, developers can use Open SQL, core data services, and ABAP managed database procedures.
This document discusses ABAP development on SAP HANA. It describes key features of the ABAP Development Tools (ADT) Eclipse plugin for developing ABAP code. With HANA, the paradigm shifts to "code-to-data" where data processing can be pushed to the database layer. The document outlines capabilities enabled by HANA like Unicode, integration with R, and large tables. It also covers tools like CDS views, AMDP classes, and ALV with integrated data access (IDA). Benefits of HANA include increased reporting speeds, real-time operations, and enabling new big data processes.

Beginner's Guide: Programming with ABAP on HANAAshish Saxena
The focus of this blog is to present an overview of the new programming techniques in ABAP after the introduction of HANA database. The focus will be towards providing a guideline on why and how an ABAP developer should start transitioning its code to use the new coding technique’s.
Technical Overview of CDS View - SAP HANA Part IIAshish Saxena
It is very important that a developer understands that technically, CDS is an enhancement of SQL which provides a Data Definition Language (DDL) for defining semantically rich database tables/views (CDS entities) and user-defined types in the database. Unlike the SAP HANA CDS, ABAP CDS are independent of the database system. The entities of the models defined in ABAP CDS provide enhanced access functions compared with existing database tables and views defined in ABAP Dictionary, making it possible to optimize Open SQL-based applications. And it is because of these unparalleled advantages that ABAP CDS is the most preferred form of methodology when it comes to Code to Data paradigm.
Customizing SAP systems can become complex and difficult to manage over time. Business rules frameworks like BRFplus/DSM provide a better approach by automating decision-making processes using rules instead of customizing. This makes applications smarter, rules more readable, and systems more adaptable over time. Transitioning from customizing to business rules requires collaboration between IT and business stakeholders to implement more agile decision management processes.

Context matters. Perspective matters. Thinking outside the box? That's often the key! While the Structured Query Language remains the lingua Franca of data, there are some views of the world that are best rendered with the benefit of NoSQL engines. As usual, that's easier said than done. How can your organization migrate from a structured query to unstructured or semi-structured query language?
Register for this episode of The Briefing Room to find out! Veteran Analyst Dr. Robin Bloor will provide a detailed assessment of serious considerations when using NoSQL engines in conjunction with SQL. He'll be briefed by Ryan Millay of IBM Cloudant, who will showcase his company's solution, and how it's addressing the more vexing challenges facing today's information managers.

Here are a few questions I have after the material covered so far:
1. What is the difference between the compute pool and app pool in a SQL Server 2019 big data cluster?
2. How does Polybase work differently in a SQL Server 2019 big data cluster compared to a traditional Polybase setup?
3. What components make up the storage pool in a SQL Server 2019 big data cluster?

Exceptional Behaviors: How Frequently Are They Tested? (AST 2025)Andre Hora
Exceptions allow developers to handle error cases expected to occur infrequently. Ideally, good test suites should test both normal and exceptional behaviors to catch more bugs and avoid regressions. While current research analyzes exceptions that propagate to tests, it does not explore other exceptions that do not reach the tests. In this paper, we provide an empirical study to explore how frequently exceptional behaviors are tested in real-world systems. We consider both exceptions that propagate to tests and the ones that do not reach the tests. For this purpose, we run an instrumented version of test suites, monitor their execution, and collect information about the exceptions raised at runtime. We analyze the test suites of 25 Python systems, covering 5,372 executed methods, 17.9M calls, and 1.4M raised exceptions. We find that 21.4% of the executed methods do raise exceptions at runtime. In methods that raise exceptions, on the median, 1 in 10 calls exercise exceptional behaviors. Close to 80% of the methods that raise exceptions do so infrequently, but about 20% raise exceptions more frequently. Finally, we provide implications for researchers and practitioners. We suggest developing novel tools to support exercising exceptional behaviors and refactoring expensive try/except blocks. We also call attention to the fact that exception-raising behaviors are not necessarily “abnormal” or rare.

Who Watches the Watchmen (SciFiDevCon 2025)Allon Mureinik
Tests, especially unit tests, are the developers’ superheroes. They allow us to mess around with our code and keep us safe.
We often trust them with the safety of our codebase, but how do we know that we should? How do we know that this trust is well-deserved?
Enter mutation testing – by intentionally injecting harmful mutations into our code and seeing if they are caught by the tests, we can evaluate the quality of the safety net they provide. By watching the watchmen, we can make sure our tests really protect us, and we aren’t just green-washing our IDEs to a false sense of security.

How Valletta helped healthcare SaaS to transform QA and compliance to grow wi...Egor Kaleynik
This case study explores how we partnered with a mid-sized U.S. healthcare SaaS provider to help them scale from a successful pilot phase to supporting over 10,000 users—while meeting strict HIPAA compliance requirements.
Faced with slow, manual testing cycles, frequent regression bugs, and looming audit risks, their growth was at risk. Their existing QA processes couldn’t keep up with the complexity of real-time biometric data handling, and earlier automation attempts had failed due to unreliable tools and fragmented workflows.
We stepped in to deliver a full QA and DevOps transformation. Our team replaced their fragile legacy tests with Testim’s self-healing automation, integrated Postman and OWASP ZAP into Jenkins pipelines for continuous API and security validation, and leveraged AWS Device Farm for real-device, region-specific compliance testing. Custom deployment scripts gave them control over rollouts without relying on heavy CI/CD infrastructure.
The result? Test cycle times were reduced from 3 days to just 8 hours, regression bugs dropped by 40%, and they passed their first HIPAA audit without issue—unlocking faster contract signings and enabling them to expand confidently. More than just a technical upgrade, this project embedded compliance into every phase of development, proving that SaaS providers in regulated industries can scale fast and stay secure.

Daniel Ridder ABAP Core Data Services No Pain, No Gain
1. ABAP Core Data Services
No Pain, No Gain
Hitchhiker's Guide to ABAP CDS since NetWeaver 7.40
SAP Inside Track 2017, Frankfurt
Daniel Ridder @nielseabap
3. ABAP Core Data Services
Technical Description
• Technologically agnostic definition of
database views
• CDS borrowed heavily from SQL-Standard
• Supports functions of ANSI-SQL
• DDIC Object [DDLS] with can only be viewed
and edited with ADT
• Generates database native artefacts (DDL-
Statements) during activation
Context of Availability
• 1st introduction of CDS with NetWeaver 7.40
SP5 on AnyDB
• Parameter-Views came up with 7.40 SP8
(DBMS compatibility unknown at that time)
• General availability of CDS for AnyDB (incl.
Parameter-Views) since NetWeaver 7.50
! DO NO MIX UP ABAP WITH HANA CDS !
It’s a total different technology
5. Back to good software design
Data access via OpenSQL Business Objects
Performing with itabs Abstraction via API-Design
6. In the beginning the business object was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

∙ OpenSQL
• Don’t go back to the old days…
• 1st define your business
object/data model
• Make it accessible via API
• OpenSQL is still an API, but…
• do not code logic into the
statement
• use CDS Views instead
– “The truth lays inside the views”
7. Consumption and Use-Cases
• CDS may act as a read-only BO
• Is the 1st choice for analytical
processes
• Enables full code pushdown of
business logic to the database
• Can be consumed in different ways
• ABAP
• OData via Annotation or SAP Gateway
• BEx BW Tools

8. CDS – phase of activation
There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what CDS
activation does, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more
bizarre and inexplicable…
9. Activation of a CDS Parameter-View
HDB on NetWeaver 7.50 SP3
• There is no specification of SQL
database views supporting
parameters
• Due to this a parameter view
becomes a complex native artifact
• A function object with a table as a
result set has to be created
• On HDB the definition of the
function is generated in SQLScript
10. There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly
what CDS activation does, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by
something even more bizarre and inexplicable.
- There is another theory which states
that this has already happened.
Activation of a CDS Parameter-View

Still 3x open incidents in system
upgrade process / SPAM breaks
• DB2/zOS
• DB2
• Upgrade-Performance
SAINT/SPAM breaks during activation phase
• incorrect order of activation
• wrong quantity of activation
• problems with cyclic dependencies
• problems after renaming of views
• SELECT *
Problems while upgrading to
NetWeaver 7.50:
• undocumented change of CDS
specification (order of key attributes)
SAINT/SPAM breaks during activation phase
• incorrect order of activation
Development Track
14. Small selection of “hitting” notes
• Note 2240326 - Cycle problems during activation of CDS views
• cycles are subject to “some restrictions” No documentation at that time
• Notes 2295005 - Data element change for table does not result in reactivation of all DDL sources during transport
2381956 - Inconsistent 'SELECT *' CDS views
2274996 - Problems with deletion of table or view fields with select * dependencies
• „Select-Star is for looser“
• Note 2239157 - Support of database features
• „Official“ GA of CDS Views with parameters in NetWeaver 7.50 on AnyDB What about the introduction in 7.40 SP8?
• Note 2331160 - Renaming of CDS artifacts in customer systems
• CDS Views could be renamed DDLS, CDS-Name, DDIC-Name (DDIC-Rename is always prohibited)
• Note 2387971 - Incompatible ABAP changes from Release 7.40 to 7.50
• Since NetWeaver 7.50 all key attributes must be located together at the start of SELECT
15. ABAP Core Data Services is a key technology
CDS goes further
• CDS let you define a VDM – virtual data model
under S/4HANA (BO 1st)
• HDB supports the definition of ABAP CDS table
functions
• Which solves a lack of AMDPs
• CDS Test Double Framework
• The upcoming S/4HANA programming model
depends heavily on CDS Views
• The draft concept combines CDS and BOPF for
transactional Fiori-Applications and is triggered by CDS
annotations
Recommendations using CDS
Recommendations based on our experiences:
• CDS > NetWeaver 7.40 > AnyDB
• Do not built huge view hierarchies (< 5 level, not more
than 10 views)
• Do not use parameters!
• Avoid cycles in associations
• Perform activation tests on each dbms target platform
• CDS > NetWeaver 7.50 > AnyDB
• We will see…
• CDS > NetWeaver 7.50 > HANA
• No restrictions
• CDS > NetWeaver 7.51 S/4HANA
• rocks
16. So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish
