Between 1455 and 1485,two families ,
called the House of York and the house of
Lancaster, fought for the throne of
England. In 1485, Henry Tudor, defeated
king Richard III and became king Henry
VII. He married Elizabeth of York and
combined the two roses to make a new
emblem – the Tudor rose.

favourite palaces.

•One of the most distinctive
things about a Tudor house
was the black and white effect
, because of their exposed
wooden frame.
• Many Tudor houses
featured a wooden frame , a
tall chimney , a steep roof and
an enclosed fire place.
• Most Tudor houses had a
thatched roof , although rich
people could afford to use
tiles.
Henry VIII is famous today for his six wives and
for his larger-than-life personality. He also made
important changes in the English society. Some
of Henry’s changes had a permanent effect on
life in England.
Henry VIII became head of the English church.
