- 3. Between 1455 and 1485,two families , called the House of York and the house of Lancaster, fought for the throne of England. In 1485, Henry Tudor, defeated king Richard III and became king Henry VII. He married Elizabeth of York and combined the two roses to make a new emblem – the Tudor rose.

Today, the Church of England remains independent and still has the English monarch as its head. Queen Elizabeth II is head of the Church of England-a title that dates back to Henry VIII’s reign.
