
 Rain having mixture of sulphur, nitrogen & some
organic Pollutants
 Mostly caused by human emissions of sulfur and
nitrogen compounds which react in the atmosphere
to produce acids (Sulphuric acid & nitric acid)
Acid Rain

Formation Of Acid Rain

 These acids increase the PH of atmospheric water
 Liquids with a pH less than 7 are acidic, and those
with a pH greater than 7 are basic
 Distilled water, which contains no carbon dioxide,
has a neutral pH of 7
Acid Rain

PH Scale

 Clean or unpolluted rain is slightly acidic having pH
of about 5.6
 Acid rain has a PH ranges from 3.5 to 5
Acid Rain

 Acid rain has a worse effect on:
• Humans
• Plants & vegetation
• Aquatic life
• Soil
• Buildings
Acid Rain

 The sulphur dioxide and nitrogen gases, causes
respiratory diseases like asthma, chronic bronchitis,
etc.
Effects On Human

 Gastric disorder due to drinking
acidic rain water
 Eyes and lungs inflammation
Effects On Human

 Acid rain dissolves all the nutrients and the useful
minerals for the tree to grow
 Weakens the process of photosynthesis
Effects On Plants

 Acid rain increases the acidity of lakes & rivers,
which is directly effect the aquatic ecosystem
 Species of fishes & invertebrate became extinct
Effects On Aquatic Life

 Effects the important ions exchange reaction in the
soil
 Acidify the soil by removing essential nutrients like
Al+3, K+1, Ca +2
 Acids activate aluminium from the soil which
leaches into water and fish die.
 Drinking water is contaminated
Effect On Soil

Effect On Soil

 The Tag Mahal in Agra, suffering from sulphuric
acid, nitric acid & other fume pollutants
Effect s On buildings

 Acid rain cause extensive damage to statues, bridges
& structural materials of marble and limestone, etc
Effect On Statues

• Fit scrubbers into factory’s chimneys, which are
chemical filters that remove impurities such as
sulphur from smoke
• Cars can be fitted whith special converters which
remove dangerous chemicals
• Goverments need to spend more money on pollution
control
Solution Of Acid Rain

 Acid rain is slowly destroying our planet. It is our
responsibility to make sure that we protect the earth
for future generations to enjoy
 We should stop polluting, for example riding your
car just to go to your neighbors five houses away
from yours, or factories
