INTRODUCTION
 Modern psychiatric hospitals evolved from, and eventually replaced
the older lunatic asylum. The development of the modern
psychiatric hospital is also the story of the rise of organized
institutional psychiatry.
 Mental health institution has various administrative functions like
staffing, planning equipment, supplies and making policies and
procedure.
PSYCHIATRY HOSPITALS
 Psychiatric hospitals, also known as mental hospitals,are hospitals
specializing in the treatment of serious mental disorders.
 Psychiatry hospitals vary widely in their size and grading.
 Some hospitals may specialise only in short-term or outpatient
therapy for low risk patients.
 Other hospitals specialise in the temporary or permanent care of
residents who,as a result of a psychological disorder ,require routine
assistance,treatment,or a specialised and controlled environment.

The minimum essential staff recommended for mental hospital as follows:

PLANNING EQUIPMENTS AND
SUPPLIES:
 Functional ,accurate and safe clinical equipment is an essential
requirements in the provision of health services.
 Well maintained equipment will give nurses greater confidence in
the reliability of its performance and contribute to a high standard of
client care, equipment management is an important issue for cost
and safety in hospital operations.
DEFINTION OF PLANNING
EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES:
 Planning of equipment and supplies is defined as process of
selection and organization of the articles or items used in the
diagnosis ,treatment and monitoring of patients in order to ensure
that they are safe,available,accurate,and affordable.
NEED OF PLANNING EQUIPMENT
AND SUPPLIES:
 Ensure that equipment and supplies used in patients care are
operational,safe,and properly configured to meet the mission of the
medical treatment facility.
 Manage safety and cost of articles.
 Stabilize fluctuations in consumption.
 Provide reasonable level of client services.

ROLE OF NURSING MANAGERS IN

 INPUT:
 Take active part in estimating the demand of equipment and supply.
 Be aware of hospital policy for requirement ,identing stock et.
 Nursing norms for equipment and supply as per nursing council
 PROCESS:
 Maintain current inventory of functional line working order
equipment and supplies.
 Do proper distribution for evening ,night shift.
 Conduct supervisory round.
 OUTPUT:
 All the staff should be aware of policy;hospital ward related to
equipment and supply.
 There should be adequate supply of equipment and supplies without
any interruption.
 Equipment should be in working order.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
 DEFINITION:
 Quality assurance is a management system designed to give
maximum guarantee and ensure confidence that the service
provided is up to the given accepted level of quality,the standards
prescribes for that service which is being achieved with a maximum
of total expenditure.
 A quality assurance programme is an ongoing systemic process
designed to evaluate and promote excellence in health care provided
to the clients.

NURSING AUDIT :
 DEFINITION:
Nursing audit is defined as “an evaluation of patient care and analysis
of the written records maintained by nurses in patients treatment
profile”.
TYPES OF NURSING AUDIT:
1. Concurrent nursing audit – patient care is observed as it is given.
2. Retrospective nursing audit - in this patient care Is evaluated only
after the discharge of the patient.

PRACTICE STANDARD FOR
PSYCHIATRIC NURSING:
 Standards of care pertain to professional nursing activities that are
demonstrated by the nurse through the nursing process.These involve
assessment,diagnosis,outcome identification,planning,implementation,and
evaluation.The nursing process is the foundation of clinical decision making
and encompasses all significant action taken by nurses in providing
psychiatric mental health care to all client.

PATIENT RECORDS:
 This document describes standards for the structure and content
of patient records, covering hospital referral letters, inpatient
clerking, handover communications, discharge summaries and
outpatient letters.
 They have been developed using published evidence and
consultation with doctors, patients, nurses and allied healthcare
professionals.
RESEARCH EVIDENCE:
STATEMENT :
To study the role of nurse administrators and managers in quality
psychiatric care in psychiatry hospitals in Japan.
(j.med.invest.February,2011).
ABSTRACT:
Psychiatric nurse administrator and manager greatly influence the quality
of services .to improve treatment this article present the role of nurse
administrator and manager in improving the quality of japnese
psychiatric healthcare services
RESULT:
Data revealed that 275(22.7%) of 1213 hospitals that jpined these
association and participated in the hospital functional evaluation.
