Acute aortic syndrome describes life-threatening conditions of the thoracic aorta including aortic dissection, intramural hematoma, and penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer. These conditions involve acute lesions of the aortic tunica media and can be distinguished by imaging techniques. Recent advances in imaging and treatment have increased awareness of these conditions and emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and management. The most common cause is aortic dissection, which occurs when blood tears the intimal layer, separating the media into an inner and outer layer. Other causes include intramural hematoma where blood enters the media without an intimal tear, and penetrating ulcers where atherosclerotic lesions erode the intima and media. Risk factors
