Symphony Software Foundation API Working Group Proposal

Michael Gardner proposes forming an API Working Group to define standards and infrastructure for the Symphony Foundation APIs. The APIs will define the developer experience and coordinate different teams and systems. The group would establish standards for API design, implement an API store and gateway, and could start with API standards from BNY Mellon as a starting point. This would help ensure consistent and modern APIs to promote developer adoption and express the Symphony Foundation roadmap.

- 3. 3 APIs are Critical APIs define the developer facing “face” of Symphony Foundation o Need consistency o Need conformity with modern standards and practices o 2x: Rest, JSON, OAUTH, Swagger o Precondition for healthy developer adoption curves APIs are also critical intrinsically o Coordinate all moving parts o Communication among disparate teams o System Availability Awareness and System Usage Instrumentation APIs also are a way to express the Symphony Foundation roadmap o They can be a template for subsequent runtime implementation o API-first is good development practice anyway o So we should of our APIs as a Product Management function…and Design the experience
- 4. 4 What do we need? Working Group Charter: Define style and standards o 2x: That each other working group can use as input to API design Define/implement runtime infrastructure for hosting the Symphony Foundation APIs o API Store o API Gateway
- 5. 5 Some Scenarios BNY Mellon could convey it’s API Standards document, as starting point o Saves minor effort only, but why not? BNY Mellon could convey it’s API Store o Which have been implemented on top of WS02 (Apache license) o It has good analytics Install WS02 There are other open source alternatives, also complete roll-your-own
