Editor's Notes

  • #3: Key Takeaway: We are a publicly traded company. Please make your buying decisions only on the products commercially available from Salesforce. Talk Track: Before I begin, just a quick note that when considering future developments, whether by us or with any other solution provider, you should always base your purchasing decisions on what is currently available.
  • #4: At Salesforce, we help companies connect to their customers through our 6 trusted cloud services of sales, service, marketing, communities anlaytics and apps,. Apps connect you to your customers, partners and employees. but today companies cant just build any kind of app, customers and employees expect engaging, connected and value driven apps, like those we expect in our personal lives.
  • #5:  But what we hear from the IT leaders we talk to, is that it’s incredibly hard to build these engaging, consumer grade apps. In fact, Gartner predicts that in just two years, in 2017, the demand for business critical mobile apps will outstrip the capacity of IT to deliver by 5x. Because delivering each app is costly and take tremendous time and resources. So what can IT do?
  • #6: Well at Salesforce we believe there is a solution, and its called components, a radically different approach to designing apps. Components are simply reusable building blocks for apps, you can think of them as legos, and they let developers build once, and then share and reuse the same pieces across multiple different applications. You can build more quickly, test, and maintain your apps with less work. This concept started in the consumer world, as a solution to improve the speed for developers. But with a limited supply of developers, this solution could only take the enterprise IT leader so far. Until, today.
  • #7: And that is why we are so excited today to be delivering Salesforce1 Lightning: a revolutionary way for IT leaders to build and deploy engaging apps to the entire enterprise, fast, Lightning: made up of the new components, and app builder, now enabed anyone in the company to create trusted app for any business process faster than ever before by leveraging the new component based technology. Now IT can focus on building set of lightning components, once, and then those components can be shared out with anyone in the company. Then, With the Lightning App Builder anyone in the company can access these components, and use them to assemble their own apps. And they can even expand their reach with the new AppExchange for Components, an entirely new part of the Salesforce AppExchange, where anyone can access components built by Salesforce developers and partners, and integrate them into their app through the Lightning app builder. So those are the new products, and I would like to take you through them in a bit more detail, and then show you a demo.
  • #8: The foundation of our announcement is new Lightning Components. Components are standard building blocks for apps. Lightning Components can be as simple as single search box or as robust as an ecommerce form.  Developers can, and already are, building anything, like a calendar, a map, a signature capture box, etc. Components are dynamic, responsive and they work across any device So now IT can save time and development resources, by reusing components across different apps. And, because they are built on the S1 Platform, they also inherit our amazing security services, so you can specify which users get access to which components.   So for example, one of our global manufacturing customers, uses components such that when their HR department in Germany wants to build a custom recruiting app, they can save time and money by simply leveraging prebuilt components from the HR team in American for the 75% of the process that is standard, and then they only need to build out the remaining 25%. More Technical: Components use event-driven architecture, stateful client and stateless server, and Model-View-Controller architecture. Lightning Components are based on JavaScript so they are perfect for your developers who want to build in modern languages.
  • #9: But whats really special about Lighting is not just components, it is that IT can share these components with anyone in the company, in our new Lightning App Builder, where anyone in your company can easily compose consumer-grade user experiences for any app, simply by dragging and dropping the components into place. And of course, because its purpose built for the enterprise, components inheret our user profiles and sharing rules, so IT can govern who can access what data and functionality. This means the woman who know the business and understand the process, are the ones building the apps, vastly reducing the need for iterations.
  • #10: Finally, we have the new AppExchange for Components, so now developers, partners and admins to distribute and monetize their components to the entire Salesforce community. Now the Worlds #1 Enterprise App Marketplace is creating an entirely new way to build apps, through our enterprise component marketplace. Trusted, Reviewed and all pre-integrated with Salesforce1 Platform. So your builders can leverage the best for your apps, to deliver more value to the business, faster. And Developers and partners can distribute and monetize components. You can find, try, and buy components built by Salesforce partners on the AppExchange today. Many of the Components work in the Lightning App Builder simply by clicking “Get It Now” and installing the package in your org.
  • #11: Website http://www.ocado.com/ Segment - EBU Region - EMEA Industry - Retail Type - Public Company Headquarters- 3 Bishops Square Hatfield, AL10 9NE United Kingdom Company Size - 5001-10,000 employees Founded – 2002 Ocado Delivers a Plan for Faster Onboarding with Salesforce1 Platform Summary: Ocado is the world’s largest dedicated online grocery supermarket, reaching over 70% of British households through their delivery service. Founded 13 years ago, Ocado powers its unique fulfillment and logistics machine with technology that more closely resembles a software company than your corner grocer. Despite having a deep bench of engineers, Ocado is turning to the Salesforce1 Platform to empower business analysts to build simple, but valuable apps for their employees for everything in their backlog. Currently Ocado is piloting 3 employee apps: “What’s Broken” app, to log items that need to be fixed, an Expenses App and an Onboarding App for new hires and their managers to improve the ramp time for new employees and reduce the admin work for their managers. About the Company Name: Ocado Segment: EBU Industry: Retail and Technology Region: EMEA Location: Hatfield, UK Results: Built 3 apps in 6 weeks with 1 analyst Business Problem Salesforce is Solving: Ocado needed to help employees move faster and be more productive with apps to help them manage daily tasks like submitting expenses, requesting time off, notifying facilities about repairs, or simply onboarding new employees. However their technology department was suffering from an endless backlog of customer-facing projects that would always take priority over improving employee tools. Their VP of Technology realized they would never be able to get the resources to build these apps from scratch and so they needed platform that would allow analysts and admins to do the majority of the building, while also having enterprise level security and compliance built in. About the App The New Joiner app Ocado’s New Joiner app will provide new hires with a step by step guide to all of the activities they need to do in their first few weeks on the job, tasks like identifying the right online chatter groups, finding a lunch buddy or taking safety training. Their team leader also has access to a companion manager app that not only outlines the tasks the manager needs to do, such as requesting a desk or ordering equipment, but also allows the manager to track the progress of her new employee to make sure he is ramping successfully. Results: Ocado began roll out the Salesforce1 Platform with a single business analyst who had no prior Salesforce experience, and he was able to build 3 apps in just 6 weeks, freeing developers to focus on priority customer-facing apps. Soon all employees will have the tools they need to get ramped up quickly, and be more productive so they can better serve Ocado’s customers.
  • #12: NOT APPROVED
  • #14: We approach Visualforce and Lightning with the same principle that we’ve always maintained, which is Salesforce just gets better as you use it. Our model is to bring everything forward. Your customizations, such as declarative customizations that you’ve done with the page layout editor, those will come forward and be respected in the new application. If you’ve done higher level customizations, like buttons and Visualforce pages, the Visualforce pages will be available in the new desktop. Our model is that they worked in desktop before, so they’ll work in the new desktop. You have the option of updating your styling to match the new environment, but we’re not going to break your customizations. That’s our model.
  • #15: Over the last 16 years, at Salesforce we’ve learned to really lean into the next big change. There are big shifts happening in the industry and we commit to those changes, such as social, mobile, and cloud, but we commit to the change while bringing all of your past customizations and investments forward. Lightning Components are the future of Salesforce technology, but we will support Visualforce for the long term. Furthermore, we will bring your Visualforce customizations into Lightning Experience.
  • #16: If you do choose to start migrating your Visualforce to Lightning Components, there are three paths you can choose. 1. Use Lightning Components in Visualforce (coming in Winter ‘16) 2. Use Visualforce in a Lightning Components via an iframe. Please be aware that this method does not give you the full performance benefits of Lightning Components. 3. Migrate your Visualforce to Lightning Components. Salesforce is currently working to ensure that Lightning Components will have the same functionality as Visualforce.
  • #17: As Lightning Components and Lightning Experience evolve, capabilities of Lightning Components will continue to increase. Using Lightning Out, you can componentize parts of your Visualforce page as it makes sense. Eventually, you can recreate all of the key functionality of in a Lightning App, with no legacy Visualforce.
