Role of ICT in Rural Development
Appropriate Rural Technologies Institute (ARTI)
Appropriate Rural Technology Institute (ARTI) is an Indian non-governmental
organization founded by a group of about 20 scientists and technologists to
develop innovative and environmentally friendly rural technologies based on
modern scientific knowledge in 1996.
The Inexpensive Household
Fuel
● Technology need not be high-end, urban, expensive and designed for profit.
It can also better and transform human lives and livelihoods in the
hinterland.
● This is what the Appropriate Rural Technologies Institute (ARTI), based in
Pune, has been quietly achieving through research initiatives over the last
two decades.
● Converting post-harvest farm residue into fuel is one of the technologies the
Ashden award-winning institute has pioneered. It involves burning
sugarcane and crop stubble in a simple machine which is then compressed
into char briquettes that serve as inexpensive household fuel.
How is technology working to turn sugarcane into fuel ?
● Ethanol from sugarcane yields 25% more energy than the amount used during
the production process, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 12%
compared to fossil fuels.
● The process of making ethanol from sugarcane starts when cane stalks are crushed to
extract a sugar-rich cane juice. When cane stalks passed through extractor/expeller, cane
juice is collected and delivered to a fermentation tank where the yeast fermentation reaction
occurs to generate ethanol.
Take the case of Dhanashri
and her husband. A
homemaker from Phaltan,
Satara district, the heart of
Maharashtra’s sugarcane
belt, she has been earning
an income the last few years
during the sugarcane
planting season due to the
training she underwent at
ARTI.
Along with their daily fam work, they
have also made a living by
producing this biofuels and selling
them in the market.
➢ ARTI
compact
biogas
digester
● A biogas digestor uses natural anaerobic decomposition of organic matter under controlled
conditions. The digestor is usually a large, sealed container for the organic matter eg manure
from livestock or poultry, green waste from agriculture, sewage or food waste.
Biogas systems take wet organic
material (feedstock) into an air-
tight tank, where bacteria break
down the material and release
biogas – a mixture of methane
with some carbon dioxide. A pipe
takes the biogas to the kitchen,
where it is used to cook with a
biogas stove or for other
purposes.
➢ How does it work?
➢ Benefits :-
About 1700 biogas plants were in use in 2016, in both urban and rural households in Maharashtra. A
few have been installed in other parts of India and elsewhere in the world.
➢ Social benefits :-
Indoor air pollution is reduced by cooking with biogas rather than wood or kerosene.
This reduces respiratory and eye problems for those in the kitchen, most of whom
are women.
Cooking with gas from an ARTI biogas plant is easy and convenient.
Thank You! ✨
