Asphaltic Sheet1.pptx
Introduction
• A Asphalt also known as bitumen is a sticky, black
and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form
of petroleum.
• The primary use (70%) of asphalt/bitumen is in road
construction.
• It is used as the glue or binder mixed with
aggregate particles to create asphalt concrete for
roads.
• Its other main uses are for bituminous
waterproofing products
Asphalt shingles come in two varieties:
1. Fiberglass
2. Organic.
Fiberglass shingles are made of a woven fiberglass base mat,
covered with a waterproof asphalt coating, and topped with ceramic
granules that shield the product from harmful UV rays
Types Of Asphaltic sheet
The traditional organic mat-based shingles are made from a
recycled layer of felt paper, asphalt-saturated for
waterproofing, and coated with adhesive asphalt into which
the ceramic granules are embedded.
Asphalt shingles are available in 2 profiles:
1. 3-Tab
2. Laminated (Architectural)
ASPHALT SHINGLE STYLES
CHARACTERISTICS
Light - weight
• Easier to handle, fix and transport
• Avoids the use of strong base material, thereby reducing the complexity of all the structures.
Flexibility
• Ease of handling and fixing
• Right choice for curved roof-tops and irregular surfaces.
Durability
• High stress-bearing capacity and
• Resistance against extremes of weather
• Most reliable material.
• Leakproof, rust proof and termite-proof
Safety & Hygiene
• It is very safe to handle and work with, and poses no health hazards to humans.
Manufacturing process
The production of asphalt roofing products consists of six major operations:
Felt saturation
Coating
Mineral surfacing (top and bottom),
Cooling and drying
Product finishing (seal-down strip application, cutting and trimming, and laminating of laminated
shingles), and
Packaging
ADVANTAGES
• Affordable
• Durability -12 to 15 years
• Asphalt sheet covering is easily repaired without solvents or adhesives.
DISADVANTAGES
• Asphalt shingles get damaged if installed at below freezing temperatures.
• Asphalt shingles are not resistant to extreme temperature variations, which causes expansion and contraction of
the shingle and subsequent cracking.
• extreme heat causes shingles to crack and loose color
• Regular maintenance and repairs are required and are better done before it rains
• The main drawback of asphalt sheet covering is the risk of fire during installation.
Installation method
• Glue in place with bitumen/solvent
mix
• Torch on - underside of felt melted with a
torch and pressed in place
• Nail in place - relies on the clout nail head being
driven slightly under the surface for a pressure seal.
Waterproofing not quite perfect, a water durable
timber layer is used under the felt, usually plywood.
• Hot bitumen
Uses
• As damp proofing material in building construction.
• For waterproofing layer on top of roof
Used in
1. Theaters
2. Dairy - farms
3. Poultry- farms
4. Schools
5. Factories
6. Canteens
7. Motor-sheds
8. Garages
9. Commercial and residential buildings
Failures
• A common problem in asphalt sheet
coverings includes wrinkles or
bubbles.
• Granule loss and exposure of "bald
spots" or cracking are common signs
that is asphalt sheet at the end of its
life
Failures
• Wear From Walking-on
• Inadequately Heated asphalt
sheet
• asphalt sheet Edge Bending &
Wear
