Asphalt, also known as bitumen, is a sticky black substance derived from petroleum that is primarily used in road construction. It is used as a binder mixed with aggregate to create asphalt concrete. Asphalt shingles are a type of roofing material made from asphalt coated fiberglass or organic felt, and topped with ceramic granules. Asphalt shingles are available in fiberglass or organic styles, and in 3-tab or laminated profiles. Asphalt roofing has advantages of being lightweight, flexible, durable, safe, and affordable but has disadvantages such as being damaged by freezing temperatures and requiring regular maintenance.
