@CarrieColesNTF
What's my story? Caroline Coles
Since achieving mine in 2017 I have been very active in the NTF community, and was elected as the
Chair of the Association of NTFs (2019)
I organised our wonderful symposium in March 2020, getting in just before lockdown! And last year's
online...I mentor NTFs both in the UK and nationally @CarrieColesNTF
What evidence can be used?
A wordle from the ANTF
Aspiring NTFs webinar 1 November 2021
In It Together: diversifying and fostering
a more inclusive NTF community
• AHE equality data found Black & Minority Ethnic colleagues, those in Further Education and with
Professional Services contracts are underrepresented in teaching awards
• Proportion of B&ME NTFS nominees lower than the proportion of B&ME academic staff in the
sector (14.8% BAME in NTFS 2020 compared with 16.5% in the sector data). Although increased
in 2021 by +5.7% in comparison with 2020 (9.1%) and increase over five years of +7.1%.
• The ‘In It Together project’: raise awareness and provide events for colleagues to share ‘lived’
experiences and insights across the NTF community (leads: Professor Sally Everett, Professor
Momna Hejmadi, Steve Briggs, & Dr. Nicola Watchman-Smith)
• Question: How can we address the systematic hurdles that colleagues face in becoming NTFs
• Actions underway: a programme of community-based mentoring (with NTF winners acting as 1-1
mentors for aspiring NTFs) , new resources to demonstrate the benefits gained for HE providers,
events focused on addressing the hurdles faced by aspiring NTFs, and new network of subject-
based NTF champions, to offer targeted support for nominations
In It Together: diversifying and fostering a more
inclusive NTF community

Three criterion (1500 words) assessed plus a 300-word Context Statement (not assessed)
Individual Excellence
(demonstrating
impact)
Developing
excellence
(commitment to
and impact of..)
Raising the
profile of
excellence
(demonstrating
impact)
Criterion 1: Individual excellence:
Evidence of enhancing and transforming student outcomes and/or the teaching
profession; demonstrating impact commensurate with the individual’s context and
the opportunities afforded by it.
This may, for example, be demonstrated by providing evidence
of the impact of:
• stimulating students’ curiosity and interest in ways which inspire a commitment
to learning;
• organising and presenting high quality resources in accessible, coherent and
imaginative ways which in turn clearly enhance students’ learning;
• recognising and actively supporting the full diversity of student learning
requirements;
• drawing upon the outcomes of relevant research, scholarship and professional
practice in ways which add value to teaching and students’ learning;
• engaging with and contributing to the established literature or to the nominee’s
own evidence base for teaching and learning.
Criterion 2: Raising the profile of excellence
Evidence of supporting colleagues and influencing support for student learning
and/or the teaching profession; demonstrating impact and engagement beyond
the nominee’s immediate academic or professional role
This may, for example, be demonstrated by providing
evidence of the impact of:
• making outstanding contributions to colleagues’ professional development
in relation to promoting and enhancing student learning;
• contributing to departmental/faculty/institutional/national initiatives to
facilitate students’ learning;
• contributing to and/or supporting meaningful and positive change with
respect to pedagogic practice, policy and/or procedure.
Criterion 3: Developing excellence
Show the nominee’s commitment to and impact of ongoing professional development
with regard to teaching and learning and/or learning support.
This may, for example, be demonstrated by providing
evidence of the impact of:
• on-going review and enhancement of individual professional
practice;
• engaging in professional development activities which enhance the
nominee’s expertise in teaching and learning support;
• specific contributions to enable significant improvements in
students’ outcomes and/or experience.
Summary: ‘The Claim’
• Nominees, you will present evidence in a personal
‘Claim’ for the award of NTF against the three
NTFS award criteria;
• Three parts to the nominee ‘Claim’:
– Section A: Context Statement (max 300 words)
– Section B: Claim against the three NTFS award criteria (max 1500 words per criterion)
– Section C: Reference List (excluded from word count)
• Only Section B of the Claim is scored by
reviewers – each of the NTFS award criteria (1-3)
is scored separately;
• The Claim must be written by the nominee.

The joy of the NTF:
Prof Sally Brown
@ProfSallyBrown
The joy of the NTF
• I knew the scheme very well, because I had set it
up from scratch when I worked for the Institute for learning
and Teaching, now Advance HE;
• Sometime after I left, I was encouraged by the university
where I was PVC, Leeds Beckett, to apply and was delighted
to be successful;
• My application was built on decades contributing to the
learning community around teaching, learning and particularly
assessment in Higher Education.
Think: mentors, teams and collaborations
Read: Prof Sally Browns advice to prospective NTFs
The NTF journey, planning and where it
can take you...
I'd received a teaching award at De Montfort University and this was
a springboard for my NTF application (successful in 2012) (and
Principal Fellow in 2015).
I always sought feedback from students on my teaching and digital
approaches to medical science, and the NTF criteria helped me
take evaluation of my work more seriously and to therefore grow in
what I was doing.
Having the NTF to aim for gave me confidence to build networks
and reach out beyond my institution. This led me to securing further
funding for Open Education projects.
Now in industry I still utilise my NTF networks to support partnership
building and studentship opportunities.
How I did mine
