This study assessed renal function and serum levels of alpha tocopherol in HIV positive patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) compared to HAART-naïve individuals in Katsina, Nigeria. Results indicated significantly higher CD4 counts, urea, and creatinine levels in HAART patients, suggesting that HIV/AIDS patients are predisposed to oxidative stress and that HAART may have nephrotoxic effects. The findings highlight the importance of monitoring renal function and considering supplementation with alpha tocopherol in HIV/AIDS patients.
