ANALYZE
When undergoing a new project one must understand their audience, purpose and
context of the project. This includes all special ethical and cultural
considerations that apply to your project.
Before ENGL 2311 I have never encountered a situation where needed to
spearhead a project so this entire section was new to me. The iterative
process gave me parameters and a very useful formula for not only creating
a project but working as a part of a team, with specific roles, and to
research for your future product or service. In order to best suit your
customer you must understand their needs and if there are specific concerns
you need to address. One of the most important techniques i learned through
the iterative process was to always check what resources are available to
you. There is always a good chance that someone prior to you has done very
similar work. This can cut down your workload and give you a template for
CREATINGTECHNICALDOCUMENTS
I have dabbled in creating technical documents before.
mostly in the form of various resumes and
applications for job or school based programs.
ENGL 2311 has advanced my ability leaps and bounds. A
great of my personal resume has been modified after
this class. Ive reduced the length, simplified the
language and eliminated cluttered formatting to
make it more readable and thereby more appealing to
potential employers.
Ive never thought to use a Cover letter or thank you
note when applying for jobs but they have proven to
be very beneficial in persuaded and staying in the
good graces of my employers.
TECHNICALPROSE
This class showed me a lot about the language that is most
appropriate for the job. I've always had a good
vocabulary but that doesn't mean it should always be
used.
This class showed me how to find resources to check how
readable my document is. My classmates and are were
also shown when it is best to use Slang, Colloquial,
formal, and informal language in work projects.
We were also taught to be mindful of disabilities and what
we can do as technical communicators to accommodate
those needs. An example of this would be including and
audio text reader for the visually impaired.
EFFECTIVEINFORMATIONDESIGN
I never realized the importance of informative design until I saw examples of
horrible ones.
This class taught me to reconsider pages as grids. Grouping images and text
that are related is an important technique to remember. Having white space
on a page to spare isn't a bad thing and can advantageous when used
correctly.
When done right a document such as a website should guide the reader to where
they want to go and be as intuitive as possible.
COMMUNICATIONPROJECTS
This way by far my favorite part of the class.
Getting along with people has never been a problem
and my group ended up turning into two good
friends that exist outside of class.
Engl 2311 taught us how to turn a group into a team.
We split responsibilities between us and held each
other accountable for our work.
Real teams will have to present their work in a
professional setting. Because we all became so
tight knit we learned how to give and take from
each other while presenting. I was the main one in
our group who was nervous about talking. My
friends picked up the slack though. When I would
fall off track they would ask me questions to
TECHNOLOGY
Technology has been the cornerstone of this class. Of
course computers are irreplaceable in the workplace.
Website design tools in my opinion are the most
important for our generation. We can create a company
website and modify it to accommodate the needs of the
users. This also applies to constantly changing smart
phone apps.
Conclusion
This class has taught me much more than I honestly anticipated going into
it.
I gained some good friend and knowledge that is actually useful in everyday
life which is more than I can say about a lot of other classes.
ENGL 2311 has been a fantastic class that I greatly enjoyed.
TRIPLE A!
