Benito Mussolini was born in 1883 in Italy to a socialist father who influenced his early political views. As a young man, Mussolini was involved in socialist politics and worked as a journalist. During World War I, Mussolini initially opposed Italy's entry into the war but later supported the war effort. He was expelled from the Socialist Party for his changing views. After the war, Mussolini was influenced by nationalist Gabriele D'Annunzio and helped publicize D'Annunzio's efforts to seize territory that Italy claimed after the war. Mussolini learned from D'Annunzio's skills in public speaking and crowd manipulation.
