Metadata provides a foundation for the cross-channel experiences we consume in the dawn of the 21st century by enabling consistency, context and interoperability. While Metadata is key to many of the User Experience methods we use – from triggering Content Strategy workflows to enabling faceted search through groups, sorts and filters, it remains a mystery to many of us. This session is a crash course on Metadata in the 21st century for UX Designers. We'll look at recent developments in the field, and build an understanding of how Metadata enables the exchange of information between parties, channels, systems and platforms through semantic, syntax and lexical specifications. Attendees will understand how Metadata fits into UX methods and tools they already know – using an ontology to support a mental model for example. This session is a must for all UX Designers looking to build meaningful cross-channel experiences in an increasingly interlinked world.

While automatic reasoning has always inspired the imagination, numerous projects have failed to deliver to the promises. The typical pitfalls related to ontologies and symbolic reasoning fall into two categories: - Over-engineered ontologies. The selected ontology language and modeling patterns can be too expressive. This can make the results of inference hard to understand and verify, which in its turn makes KG hard to evolve and maintain. It can also impose performance penalties far greater than the benefits. - Inappropriate reasoning support. There are many inference algorithms and implementation approaches, which work well with taxonomies and conceptual models of few thousands of concepts, but cannot cope with KG of millions of entities. - Inappropriate data layer architecture. One such example is reasoning with virtual KG, which is often infeasible.

The W3C's Semantic Web effort aims to make such knowledge more accessible to computer programs by publishing it in machine understandable form. <p> As the volume of Semantic Web data grows software agents will need their own search engines to help them find the relevant and trustworthy knowledge they need to perform their tasks. We will discuss the general issues underlying the indexing and retrieval of RDF based information and describe Swoogle, a crawler based search engine whose index contains information on over a million RDF documents. <p> We will illustrate its use in several Semantic Web related research projects at UMBC including a distributed platform for constructing end-to-end use cases that demonstrate the semantic web’s utility for integrating scientific data. We describe ELVIS (the Ecosystem Location Visualization and Information System), a suite of tools for constructing food webs for a given location, and Triple Shop, a SPARQL query interface which searches the Semantic Web for data relevant to a given query ELVIS functionality is exposed as a collection of web services, and all input and output data is expressed in OWL, thereby enabling its integration with Triple Shop and other semantic web resources.

A giant folksonomy of 27 000 “keywords” had quietly amassed in the CMS used by the World Health Organization over the course of 15 years. With an imminent migration, it was time to transform this list into something useful, and to take control of how content was being published on the web. How do you build the business case to tackle such a large list of terms? How do you actually whittle a list that size into something useful? And what insights into taxonomy development were learned on the way? Learn how the team at WHO transformed a jungle of terms to a small collection of controlled lists, brought in governance, and transformed the way they manage content on the web in the process.

More than ever large organizations need taxonomy to retrieve, publish and manage information in the way they want to. Being able to manage records, documents and other digital assets throughout their lifecycle is key to efficient operations and effective communications. This is a case study of a taxonomy project completed for the world’s football governing authority, FIFA. As a global organization over 100 years old FIFA has produced a large collection of official documents, and they needed a way to organize them. From the business problem that sparked the project to the exercises, analysis and standards used to the derive the final product, we’ll look at each phase of this unique taxonomy project, and take away a few useful insights along the way. Enterprise Taxonomy for FIFA - World Information Architecture Day (WIAD) Swit...aungstad

FIFA needed an enterprise taxonomy to better organize their large collection of over 100 years of content across various systems and improve findability. The project involved stakeholder interviews, analysis of existing taxonomies and content, and testing phases. Key lessons included the importance of project management and addressing obstacles to implementation early, as information architecture is intertwined with workflows, organizational structure and more. The final taxonomy and report provided a standardized structure and recommendations to classify and govern content going forward.

Metadata enables consistency, context and interoperability in a cross-channel context by managing, describing and exchanging information objects. This presentation explores 3 different types of metadata: administrative, descriptive, and structural, and their role in UX practices including content strategy, responsive design, rich snippets, and web forms. We’ll then look at the cross-channel ecosystem, understanding media, channels, interactions and touchpoints. We’ll explore The Internet of Things, and furthermore the importance of information exchanges in cross-channel service design. From there we learn about the nuts and bolts of an information exchange, including semantics, syntax and lexicon, and how these are documented in schema. Then we’ll look at some of the common standards used to specify schema for information exchanges and semantic markup. Last but not least, we’ll explore how linked data and ontologies enable us to progress from the Web of Documents to the Web of Data. Talk at the final event of Data Fusion Dynamics: A Collaborative UK-Saudi Initiative in Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence funded by the British Council UK-Saudi Challenge Fund 2024, Cardiff Metropolitan University, 29th April 2025 https://alandix.com/academic/talks/CMet2025-AI-Changes-Everything/ Is AI just another technology, or does it fundamentally change the way we live and think? Every technology has a direct impact with micro-ethical consequences, some good, some bad. However more profound are the ways in which some technologies reshape the very fabric of society with macro-ethical impacts. The invention of the stirrup revolutionised mounted combat, but as a side effect gave rise to the feudal system, which still shapes politics today. The internal combustion engine offers personal freedom and creates pollution, but has also transformed the nature of urban planning and international trade. When we look at AI the micro-ethical issues, such as bias, are most obvious, but the macro-ethical challenges may be greater. At a micro-ethical level AI has the potential to deepen social, ethnic and gender bias, issues I have warned about since the early 1990s! It is also being used increasingly on the battlefield. However, it also offers amazing opportunities in health and educations, as the recent Nobel prizes for the developers of AlphaFold illustrate. More radically, the need to encode ethics acts as a mirror to surface essential ethical problems and conflicts. At the macro-ethical level, by the early 2000s digital technology had already begun to undermine sovereignty (e.g. gambling), market economics (through network effects and emergent monopolies), and the very meaning of money. Modern AI is the child of big data, big computation and ultimately big business, intensifying the inherent tendency of digital technology to concentrate power. AI is already unravelling the fundamentals of the social, political and economic world around us, but this is a world that needs radical reimagining to overcome the global environmental and human challenges that confront us. Our challenge is whether to let the threads fall as they may, or to use them to weave a better future.
