The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) conducted a feasibility study on biomass power generation at the former Farmland Industries site in Lawrence, Kansas, in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of the Re-Powering America's Land initiative. The study concluded that biomass facility implementation at the site was not feasible due to limited biomass resources, incompatible site plans, and low power purchase agreement rates, which rendered the project economically unviable. Consequently, a full feasibility study was not pursued, and the report focuses on key factors influencing biopower decisions, providing insights for other communities exploring renewable energy options.
