Argumentative
Paragraphs
Claim, Evidence, Analysis
The argumentative paragraph:
1. The claim
2. The evidence
3. The analysis
Body paragraphs
The Claim
- Your topic sentence
- Only one point
- Debatable
The Claim
1
• A claim based on a fact (weak)
Becoming a vegetarian will decrease the need for
unhealthy meat products.
The Claim
1
• A debatable claim (stronger)
Becoming a vegetarian prompts people to replace
unhealthy meat products with healthier food options.
2
- Prove your claim
- Books, journals, the Internet, etc.
- Quotation, paraphrased idea, statistic, etc.
The Evidence
The Evidence
2
• Evidence based on one source (weak)
According to Van der Laan (2021), people who have made the decision to cut
meat-based products from their diet tend to replace these with plant-based
alternatives. These alternatives tend to be low in saturated fats, which decreases
the chance of heart disease. In addition, Van der Laan points out that a
vegetarian diet tends to be lower in calories, which reduces the chance of obesity.
2
• Evidence based on multiple sources (stronger)
Many scientists claim that people who have made the decision to cut meat-based
products from their diets tend to replace these with plant-based alternatives:
‘These alternatives tend to be low in saturated fats, which decreases the chance of
heart disease” (Van der Laan, 2021, p. 52). A vegetarian diet also tends to be lower
in calories, which reduces the chance of obesity (Streekstra, 2019). In addition,
vegetarians tend to have lower cholesterol levels when compared to non-
vegetarians (Miller, 2018). This reduces the chance of high blood pressure.
The Evidence
The Analysis
3
- Connection between your claim and the
evidence
- You should show the connection
The Analysis
3
• No connection with your claim (weak)
Scientists have shown that people who become
vegetarians tend to replace meat products with
alternatives that are lower in saturated fat, calories,
and cholesterol.
The Analysis
3
• Your Evidence supports your claim (stronger)
The evidence suggests that people who become
vegetarians tend to replace their meat products with
plant-based alternatives that are healthier.
