In their new book How Google Works, Google Executive Chairman and ex-CEO Eric Schmidt and former SVP of Products Jonathan Rosenberg share the lessons they learned over the course of a decade running Google.
Covering topics including corporate culture, strategy, talent, decision-making, communication, innovation, and dealing with disruption, the authors illustrate management maxims with numerous insider anecdotes from Google’s history.
In an era when everything is speeding up, the best way for businesses to succeed is to attract smart-creative people and give them an environment where they can thrive at scale. How Google Works is a new book that explains how to do just that.

This is an excerpt from the book ZAG: The #1 Strategy of High-Performance Brands by Marty Neumeier

Pitching Ideas: How to sell your ideas to othersJeroen van Geel
Learn how to convince others of your UX ideas by understanding them.
We are good in designing usable and engaging products and services. We understand the user's needs and have a toolkit with dozens of deliverables. But for some reason it remains difficult to sell an idea or concept to team members, managers or clients. After this session that problem will be solved!
Selling your ideas and convincing others is one of the most undervalued assets in our field. This ranges from convincing a colleague to use a certain design pattern to selling research to your boss and convincing a client to go for your concept. You can come up with the best ideas in the world, but if it is presented in the wrong way these ideas will die a lonely dead. This is sad, because everybody can learn how to bring a message across. The main thing is that you know what to pay attention to.
In this session I will take you on a journey through the world of presenting ideas. We will move through the heads of clients and your colleagues, learn what their thoughts and needs are. We will move to the core of your idea and into the world of psychology.

If you are like many people, even the thought of delivering a speech in front of an audience will get your palms sweating. The fear of public speaking ranks high among the most common phobias, and for good reason: most of us approach the situation with the wrong mindset, which in turn makes us live out our worst fears in a public forum.
As Michael Parker notes in IT’S NOT WHAT YOU SAY: How to Sell Your Message When It Matters Most (A TarcherPerigee paperback; on sale January 2016), our fixation on the content of our words – and not the presentation of ourselves – is what brings us down. Once the Vice-Chairman of London’s Saatchi & Saatchi, and one of the world’s most experienced advertising pitch men, having made more than 1,000 pitches in his successful career, Parker has learned first-hand that an effective presentation, a job interview, or even a speech at a wedding hinges on our ability to portray ourselves as passionate, relatable, and collected. But, if we are focused on what we say, and not how we act, we will fail to persuade our audience.
Applied in the boardroom, at the pulpit, or even in conversation, these tenets will help you present better in any situation.
Rand Fishkin discusses why content marketing often fails and provides 5 key reasons: 1) Unrealistic expectations of how content marketing works, 2) Creating content without a community to amplify it, 3) Focusing on content creation but not amplification, 4) Ignoring search engine optimization, and 5) Giving up too soon and not allowing time for content to gain traction. He emphasizes that content marketing is a long-term process of building relationships and that most successful content took years of iteration before gaining significant reach.

Study: The Future of VR, AR and Self-Driving CarsLinkedIn
We asked LinkedIn members worldwide about their levels of interest in the latest wave of technology: whether they’re using wearables, and whether they intend to buy self-driving cars and VR headsets as they become available. We asked them too about their attitudes to technology and to the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the devices that they use. The answers were fascinating – and in many cases, surprising.
This SlideShare explores the full results of this study, including detailed market-by-market breakdowns of intention levels for each technology – and how attitudes change with age, location and seniority level. If you’re marketing a tech brand – or planning to use VR and wearables to reach a professional audience – then these are insights you won’t want to miss.
For ten years or more, China has been a uniquely powerful engine of the global economy, regularly posting high single-figure or even double-digit annual increases in GDP. More recently, growth has slowed, prompting sharp falls in international commodity prices and casting a shadow over the near-term prospects for developed and emerging markets.
What will happen next? Pessimists struggle to see what China can do for an encore after what they say was an extraordinary, one-off period of catching up. Optimists believe that during the next 10 to 15 years, China has the potential to continue to outperform the rest of the world and to take its place as a full-fledged advanced economy (see summary infographic, “What’s next for China?”).
The document discusses best practices for structuring agile software development teams using Scrum. It recommends keeping teams small, with no more than two pizzas worth of people, as smaller teams are more productive, collaborative, and satisfying. Feature teams that focus on delivering whole features or capabilities are preferable to component teams. Guidelines are provided for assembling self-organizing teams, such as including all needed disciplines, balancing skills and experience, and seeking diversity. Once assembled, teams should focus their efforts on a single project rather than multitasking across projects.

Mobile devices are increasingly how people access the internet and search for jobs. By the end of 2013, 50% of all internet traffic will come from mobile phones rather than desktop computers. Many job seekers now use mobile apps to search for jobs, with 77% using mobile job search apps to get quick access to new postings anywhere. Companies need to have a mobile strategy and presence to engage this full audience potential, including building mobile optimized websites and native apps. Allthetopbananas is an expert in developing mobile recruitment solutions for companies through packages that include building apps for iPhone, Android and other platforms.

It is difficult and costly for agencies to build mobile apps that consumers will notice and use regularly. The mobile app market is extremely crowded, with millions of apps available, and consumers are selective about which apps they download and use routinely. Most branded consumer apps fail to gain significant usage, with over 90% being downloaded by less than 10,000 users. However, some exceptions exist for apps that offer high utility through features like managing workouts, ordering food, or booking travel, especially when supported by extensive promotional campaigns. The document recommends agencies focus on mobile-responsive websites, in-app advertising, and developing apps targeted at internal users like remote workforces (mobile enterprise apps) to get better results than typical consumer-facing apps.

Mobile device usage has surpassed desktop usage, with the top activities being texting, emailing, using social media platforms like Facebook, taking photos with cameras, reading news, online shopping, and checking the weather. Two-thirds of the world's population now owns at least one mobile device. Mobile apps allow businesses to create brand awareness, engage customers through in-app offers and promotions, and increase access to users by providing local information and driving in-person visits. There are three main types of mobile apps: native apps designed for specific platforms, web-based apps that function through a browser, and hybrid apps that combine native and web-based elements.
Wordpress for Apps is a service that allows users to create mobile apps without programming. Their team has developed a proprietary engine that compiles apps natively and transcodes media, allowing apps to work across different devices. Their business model includes free and paid community tiers, as well as a revenue sharing model for publishers. They have seen traction with over 20,000 apps created and 1.2 million downloads since launching in October.

How App Development Techniques Are Driving The Industry.pdfDepex Technologies
The changes in app development have been quite profound. Yet how are our apps designed and developed? How has that changed to keep pace with the new functionalities and, just as importantly, how we use them?
This document discusses the importance of mobile applications and personalization strategies. Some key points made include:
- Mobile applications are becoming the primary point of contact for brands as people spend more time on apps than desktop websites.
- App usage is growing significantly while web traffic declines. The majority of time spent on smartphones is within mobile apps.
- Developing an app is not enough, a strategy is needed to promote downloads and encourage recurring use to avoid becoming a "zombie app" that is rarely used.
- To be successful, an app needs a clear role and value, reliable and intuitive design, and strategies to promote initial downloads and stimulate ongoing use through updates and notifications.
Ten simple rules that anyone planning on launching a mobile app needs to follow.
Crafted from several years of blood, sweat and tears in marketing apps, in this presentation we share key statistics on the app industry and the real chance of successfully launching a mobile app.
The ten commandments are based on industry best-practice insight, can be followed by anyone - from a bedroom coder to established big-name publishers.

Everyone knows that apps are the future - but how do you market them? With hundreds of apps launching every day, how do you build an audience, reach the media, and get your app featured on the app stores? Most importantly of all, how can you turn your app into a business?
We'll share the ten essential considerations that any brand or publisher needs to address when launching an app, and give an up-to-date viewpoint on the challenges and rewards of the app business.

The document discusses the concept of a "digital nomad" and living without boundaries. It suggests that when traveling internationally, one can be exempt from both the rules of their home culture and local rules, leaving them free to determine their own standards. It also presents several assertions about life as a digital nomad, such as money being about location rather than amount, and that health is not defined by pills.
The document discusses protocol-oriented programming (POP) in Swift. It provides examples of using protocols to define behaviors for views and view controllers. Views can adopt protocols to share shaking animations, while view controllers can retrieve data from any network service that conforms to a Gettable protocol. Tests can inject mock services to test view controller functionality without network calls. The document advocates blending different programming paradigms like POP, OOP and FP to build robust and testable apps.
Last October, I gave up my expensive San Francisco apartment, gave away the few big things I did own, and flew to Amsterdam (through Iceland ☃️) with all my worldly possessions in two suitcases and a backpack. Since then, I’ve been to 12 countries and many more cities working from my 13” MacBook Pro.
Being a digital nomad has always been my dream, but I was not nearly prepared for the reality of it. Learn what travel bloggers will not tell you about what it’s really like to be a digital nomad.
The Apple Watch is the next big thing with consumers. Learn everything from the basics of interaction design for the Apple Watch to how to develop fast and powerful apps that your users need to have. Everything you need to know to make the next killer app.
This is an overview of watchOS 2 designed to give you the head start you need to start building! Learn about how to design for the Apple Watch, the different UI components included, how your Apple Watch works together (and independently) with your iOS app, and more!
Value types are at the core of Swift (seriously, mostly everything in the Swift standard library is a value type). But how do you avoid subclassing? That’s where the power of Protocol-Oriented programming comes in. Learn how to structure your code to never subclass (almost) again! Practical everyday examples and ideas for your own code base will be included.
This document discusses using protocols and view models to configure views in Swift. It provides an example of a switch cell that can be configured using protocols for its text, switch state, and other properties. Protocol extensions are used to provide default values. The view model conforms to the protocols to provide the data to configure the cell. This avoids tightly coupling the cell to a specific view model class. The document suggests this approach makes the code more reusable, testable and maintainable.
This document discusses using protocols and view models to configure table view cells in Swift. It presents a problem with directly configuring cells and proposes using protocols to define cell configuration. Protocol extensions are used to provide default values. View models conform to these protocols to provide the data and behavior for configuring cells. This allows separating data, UI, and logic concerns to make the code more reusable, testable and maintainable.
The document discusses learning the Swift programming language. It provides tips on learning about value types, optionals, and testing in Swift. It encourages learning from others, teaching, putting yourself out there, and exposing yourself to advanced topics. It also advertises an upcoming Powerswift workshop on working with the latest Xcode beta.
This document provides an overview of WatchOS 2 and developing Apple Watch apps. It discusses designing interfaces optimized for the Apple Watch, using Watch Connectivity for background data transfer and interactive messaging between an iOS app and Apple Watch app, and includes a code sample for setting up a Watch Connectivity session. Resources for learning more such as WWDC videos and blogs are also listed.
This document provides an agenda for a talk on iOS8 HealthKit. It introduces Swift programming basics like type inference, optionals, downcasting, and functions. It discusses HealthKit data types like HKUnit, HKQuantity, and formatters. It demonstrates requesting user data from HealthKit and querying fitness data. Best practices for HealthKit are also covered, including localization. The talk concludes with time for questions.

WatchKit allows developers to create companion apps for the Apple Watch that provide quick interactions measured in seconds to complement full-featured iOS apps. Glances display timely information from apps at a glance. Notifications on the Apple Watch come in subtle, abbreviated, and detailed forms to convey important messages without a full app launch and can include options for user response.
Apple's guidelines recommend that Watch apps complement rather than replace iPhone apps, with interactions measured in seconds rather than minutes. The document discusses Watch app components like Glances, which are collections of moments from favorite apps, and Notifications, which can be subtle, abbreviated, or detailed. It provides links to Apple's documentation on WatchKit and the App Store for Apple Watch apps.
This document promotes the power of Apple's Playgrounds feature and provides resources for unleashing that power. It discusses modules, visualization, and interactive documentation as key aspects of Playgrounds. Examples of Playground files and references are given to help users learn more about building with Playgrounds.
The document discusses guidelines for developing Apple Watch apps. It notes that Watch apps should complement iOS apps, with interactions measured in seconds rather than minutes. Glances are meant to show meaningful moments from apps at a glance. Notifications on the Watch come in four types: subtle, abbreviated, detailed, and those requiring user action. The document cautions developers to only include features that make sense for the Watch.
This document discusses Swift programming concepts including value types, optionals, testing, and more. It provides code examples of structs as value types and using optionals to represent missing or incorrect values. It also shows how to create a Person model and PersonViewModel, add input validation to the view model using enums and errors, and handle errors when creating a person from the view model.
The document discusses key concepts in Swift programming including optionals, value types, and higher-order functions. It provides examples of using optionals to safely access dictionary values and avoid crashes. It also contrasts the differences between value types (structs, enums) and reference types (classes), explaining when each is preferred. Finally, it demonstrates how higher-order functions like map, filter, and reduce can operate on arrays, giving examples using a dataset of Taylor Swift songs.

Artificial Intelligence is providing benefits in many areas of work within the heritage sector, from image analysis, to ideas generation, and new research tools. However, it is more critical than ever for people, with analogue intelligence, to ensure the integrity and ethical use of AI. Including real people can improve the use of AI by identifying potential biases, cross-checking results, refining workflows, and providing contextual relevance to AI-driven results.
News about the impact of AI often paints a rosy picture. In practice, there are many potential pitfalls. This presentation discusses these issues and looks at the role of analogue intelligence and analogue interfaces in providing the best results to our audiences. How do we deal with factually incorrect results? How do we get content generated that better reflects the diversity of our communities? What roles are there for physical, in-person experiences in the digital world?
DevOpsDays Atlanta 2025 - Building 10x Development Organizations.pptxJustin Reock
Building 10x Organizations with Modern Productivity Metrics
10x developers may be a myth, but 10x organizations are very real, as proven by the influential study performed in the 1980s, ‘The Coding War Games.’
Right now, here in early 2025, we seem to be experiencing YAPP (Yet Another Productivity Philosophy), and that philosophy is converging on developer experience. It seems that with every new method we invent for the delivery of products, whether physical or virtual, we reinvent productivity philosophies to go alongside them.
But which of these approaches actually work? DORA? SPACE? DevEx? What should we invest in and create urgency behind today, so that we don’t find ourselves having the same discussion again in a decade?
