The State Bank of India (SBI) undertook the largest implementation of a centralized core processing system in banking history to modernize its operations and compete with private-sector banks that were attracting customers with advanced technology. Starting in 2002, the project initially targeted 3,300 branches but expanded to over 14,600, ultimately achieving a unified system that improved product offerings and financial inclusion across rural areas. The project, executed with Tata Consultancy Services, resulted in streamlined operations, enabling SBI to better serve India’s citizens and enhance its market competitiveness.
