Crankshaft Front Seal - Remove and Install
SMCS - 1160-010
Removal Procedure
Start By:
a. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
Note: Refer to Specifications, "Engine Design" for non-specified engine torque values.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

crankshaft.

Idler Gear - Remove and Install

Start By:
a. Remove the rear housing.

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.
Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Alignment of timing marks

1. Find top dead center for number 4 piston. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Finding Top
Center for No. 4 Piston".
2. Ensure that Timing Marks (X) on the camshaft gear and the crankshaft gear are aligned.
Refer to Illustration 1.
3. Ensure that Timing Marks (Y) on the idler gear and the camshaft gear are aligned. Refer to
Illustration 2.
4. Ensure that Timing Marks (Z) on the idler gear and the fuel injection pump gear are aligned.
Refer to Illustration 3.
5. Remove bolts (2), washer (3), and the idler shaft from idler gear (1). Remove idler gear (1)
and the washer.
6. Use Tooling (A) to remove idler gear bearing (4) from idler gear (1).
1. Install idler gear (1) in the reverse order of removal.
a. Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 49 to 55 N·m (36 to 41 lb ft).

b. Ensure that the gears, cylinder block surface, and idler gear (1) are clean and free
from wear or damage. If necessary, replace any components that are worn or
damaged.
c. Lubricate idler gear bearing surface (4) with clean engine oil.
d. Check oil clearance between the idler gear shaft and the idler gear bushing. Refer to
Specifications, "Gear Group (Front)" for allowable clearance.
e. Check the idler gear shaft outer diameter and the inner diameter for the idler gear
bushing.

Start By:
a. Remove the crankshaft front seal.

1. Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal.
2. Disconnect hose assemblies (1) and (2) from the oil cooler.
3. Remove bolts (4).
4. Remove front housing (3) and the gasket.

1. Ensure that the front housing is clean and free from damage. If necessary, replace the front
housing.
2. Clean all the gasket surfaces of the cylinder block.
3. Apply Tooling A to the seam between the lower crankcase section (6) and the upper
crankcase section (5).
4. Align a new gasket and install the gasket to the cylinder block.
5. Tighten 13 bolts (4) in a side to side sequence. Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 24 to 27 N·m
(212 to 239 lb in)

6. Connect hose assemblies (1) and (2) to the oil cooler.
7. Fill the cooling system with coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling
System Coolant (ELC) - Change" for the correct draining and filling procedures.

Valve Mechanism Cover - Remove and Install
SMCS - 1107-010
Removal Procedure
Start By:
a. Remove the glow plugs.
b. Remove the fuel injection lines.
Note: Refer to Specification UENR3421 "Engine Design" for non-specified engine Torque
Values.
1. Remove bolts (1) to remove brackets.
2. Disconnect hose assemblies (2) and (3).

3. Remove bolts (4).
4. Remove valve mechanism cover (5).
5. If necessary, remove O-ring seal in valve mechanism cover (5) and replace with new.
1. Install valve mechanism cover (5) in the reverse order of removal.
a. Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 10 to 11 N·m (87 to 100 lb in).

Rocker Shaft and Push Rod - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure
Start By:
a. Remove valve mechanism cover.
Values.
1. Remove bolts (3) and tube assembly (4).
2. Remove nuts (2) and brackets (1).

3. Remove bolts (5) from rocker shaft assembly (6).
4. Remove rocker shaft assembly (6) from cylinder head (9).
5. Place an identification mark on pushrods (8) in order to show the location. Remove
pushrods (8) from cylinder head (9).
Note: Identification will ensure that the pushrods can be reinstalled in the original positions.
Do not interchange the positions of used pushrods.
6. Remove valve bridge arms (7).
1. Install rocker shaft assembly (6) and pushrods (8) in the reverse order of removal.
a. Install bolts (5) and tighten to a torque of 49 to 55 N·m (37 to 41 lb ft).
b. Position brackets (1) and install nuts (2). Tighten nuts (2) to a torque of 24 to 27 N·m
(18 to 20 lb ft) .
2. Position tube assembly (4) and install bolts (3). Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of
9.8 to 11.2 N·m (87 to 100 lb in).
3. Adjust the inlet valve lash and the exhaust valve lash to 0.13 to 0.17 mm
(0.005 to 0.007 inch). Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Engine Valve Lash -
Inspect/Adjust".
