1. Position final drive and travel motor (1) in a suitable cribbing. The combined weight of final
drive and travel motor (1) is approximately 256 kg (564 lb).
2. Remove bolts (2).

3. Remove cover (3).
4. Remove O-ring seal (4) from the cover.

5. Remove sun gear (5).
6. Remove planetary assembly (6).
7. Remove retaining ring (7).

8. Use a suitable puller to remove gear (8).
9. Remove spacer (9).
10. Repeat Step 7 through Step 9 for the remaining gears.

Note: Before removing ring nut (10) lock the travel motor with a suitable tool.
11. Use a suitable punch to remove calking on ring nut (10).
12. Attach Tooling (A) to loosen ring nut (10). Remove ring nut (10).

13. Use a suitable press to separate housing (12) from travel motor (11).
14. Use Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to housing (12). The weight of housing (12) is
approximately 83 kg (183 lb). Remove housing (12).

15. Assemble Tooling (C) on bearing race (13).
16. Turn the bolts on Tooling (C) until bearing race (13) comes out. Remove bearing race (13).

17. Remove seal (14).
18. Remove bearing race (15).

19. Turn over the housing. Remove seal (16) from the housing.
20. Remove bearing balls (17) and the separators from the housing.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, clean all parts in cleaning fluid. Allow
the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited
on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use
new parts for replacement.

1. Use a suitable tooling to position bearing race (15). Install bearing race (15).
2. Install bearing balls (17) and the supports into the housing.
Note: The seals and all surfaces that contact the seals must be clean and dry. After
installation of the seals, apply oil on the contact surfaces of the seals.
3. Install bearing race (13) into the housing.

Orientation of seal (14).
Dimension (X) is equal to 0.5 mm (0.02 inch).
4. Use Tooling (D) to install seal (14). Install seal (14) into housing (12). The flatness of seal
(14) should be same as the dimension (X).

Orientation of seal (15).
Dimension (Y) is equal to 0.5 mm (0.02 inch).
5. Use Tooling (D) to install seal (15). Install seal (15) into travel motor (11). The flatness of
seal (14) should be same as the dimension (Y).
6. Clean seal (14) faces.

7. Use Tooling (E) and a suitable lifting device to travel motor (11). The weight of travel
motor (11) is approximately 125 kg (276 lb). Position travel motor (11) into the housing.

Typical Example
Note: Use two clamps at 180 degrees to avoid housing (12) come out from travel motor (11)
during the movement of the unit. Remove the clamps when the unit is positioned.
8. Use a suitable press and metal stopper to install travel motor (11). Install travel motor (11).
9. Place ring nut (10) into the housing.

10. Use a suitable lifting device to place Tooling (A) on ring nut (10). Tighten by a torque
wrench with an input multiplier torque of 143 ± 5 N·m (105 ± 4 lb ft) corresponding to an
output multiplier torque of 7750 ± 250 N·m (5716 ± 184 lb ft).
11. Install spacers (9).

12. Place gears (8) on the flanged hub.
13. Use a rubber hammer and metal stopper to install gears (8). Install gears (8).

14. Install retaining rings (7).
15. Install planetary assembly (6).

16. Install sun gear (5).
17. Install O-ring seal (4).
18. Install cover (3).

19. Install bolts (2). Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 70 ± 7 N·m (52 ± 5 lb ft).
20. Fill the final drive with the lubricant oil. Insert plugs (18) into the oil draining and filling
holes of the cover.
21. Tighten plugs (18) to a torque of 35 ± 5 N·m (310 ± 44 lb in).

Start By:
a. Remove the sprocket.
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure.
Hot oils can cause burns.
To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the work
tool hydraulic circuit (boom, stick, bucket, and swing), travel circuits,
and the hydraulic oil tank at the filler cap before any hydraulic lines or
components are disconnected or removed.
Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap
is cool enough to touch.

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool
Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat®
products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Drain the final drive oil into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer the Operation
and Maintenance Manual, "Final Drive Oil - Change" for the correct draining and filling
procedures.
2. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to final drive and travel motor (1). The
weight of final drive and travel motor (1) is approximately 260 kg (573 lb). Apply a slight
lifting tension on final drive and travel motor (1).
