Removal Procedure
Start By:
A. Remove the fan drive mounting group. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fan Drive
Mounting Group - Remove and Install".
NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.
Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Housing (Front) - Remove

Removal Procedure
Start By:
A. Remove the camshaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Camshaft - Remove".
B. Remove the unit injector hydraulic pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Unit
Injector Hydraulic Pump - Remove".
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Support the weight of the front of the engine. Remove bolts (1) and front engine support
(2) .
2. Remove bolts (3) and bolts (5). Remove front housing (4) .

1. Clean the joint face on front housing (4) with Tooling (A) .
2. Apply Tooling (B) to the joint face. Allow the primer to dry for at least three to five
minutes.
3. Apply Tooling (C) to the joint face. Spread the sealant uniformly. Front housing (4) must be
installed within ten minutes of applying the sealant.
4. Position front housing (4) on the cylinder block.
5. Install bolts (3) and bolts (5) .
6. Position front engine support (2) and install bolts (1) .
End By:
a. Install the unit injector hydraulic pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Unit Injector
Hydraulic Pump - Install".
b. Install the camshaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Camshaft - Install".

A. Remove the front housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Housing (Front) -
Remove".

1. Remove bolts (4) and retaining plate (1) .
2. Remove camshaft idler gear (2) .
3. Remove bolt (7) and idler shaft (3) from the cylinder block. Remove thrust plate (5) .
4. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable press to remove bearing (6) from camshaft idler gear (2) .

1. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable press to install bearing (6) in camshaft idler gear (2). Install
the bearing until the bearing is 1.080 ± 0.250 mm (0.0425 ± 0.0098 inch) below the front
face of camshaft idler gear (2) .
2. Position thrust plate (5) and idler shaft (3) on the cylinder block. Install bolt (7). Tighten the
bolt to a torque of 70 ± 15 N·m (51 ± 11 lb ft).
3. Install camshaft idler gear (2) on idler shaft (3). Ensure that timing mark (8) is facing
outward. Align timing mark (8) with timing mark (9) on crankshaft drive gear (10) .
4. Position plate (1) and install bolts (4). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 70 ± 15 N·m (51 ± 11
lb ft).
End By: Install the front housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Housing (Front) -
Install".

2. Disconnect harness assemblies (1) .
3. Remove bolts (2), valve mechanism cover base (3), and the gasket from the cylinder head.

(2) and tighten bolts (2) in a numerical sequence to the standard torque.

1. Place identification marks on each rocker arm and on each pushrod in order to identify the
proper location in the engine for installation.

3. Remove bolts (1), bolts (2), and rocker shaft (3) .
4. Remove inlet valve bridges (5) and pushrods (6) .

Start By:
a. Remove the rocker shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft and Pushrod -
Remove".

Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring
pressure.
Spring force will be released when covers are removed.
Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.
Note: Place an identification mark on each of the components of the rocker shaft for
installation purposes.
1. Remove retaining ring (2).
2. Remove stand (3), inlet rocker arms (4), exhaust rocker arms (5), stands (6), and springs (7)
from the rocker shaft.
3. Remove dowel pin (8) and stand (9) from the rocker shaft.
4. Remove plug (1).

Rocker Shaft - Assemble

Assembly Procedure
NOTICE
1. Lubricate all of the components of the rocker shaft with clean engine oil.

Improper assembly of parts that are spring loaded can cause bodily
injury.
To prevent possible injury, follow the established assembly procedure
and wear protective equipment.
2. Install plug (1).
3. Install stand (9) and dowel pin (8) on the rocker shaft.
4. Install springs (7), stands (6), exhaust rocker arms (5), inlet rocker arms (4), and stand (3)
on the rocker shaft.
5. Install retaining ring (2).
End By:
a. Install the rocker shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft and Pushrod -
Install".

1. Apply Tooling (A) to both ends of pushrods (6) .
2. Lubricate pushrods (6) with clean engine oil. Install pushrods (6) and inlet valve bridges
(5) .
3. Position rocker shaft (3). Install bolts (1) and bolts (2). Finger tighten bolts (1) and bolts (2).
Tighten bolts (2) and bolts (1) to standard torque.
4. Apply Tooling (A) to each of the button faces of the rocker arms.
5. Adjust the valve lash of the rocker arm by turning rocker arm adjustment screws (4). Refer
to Testing and Adjusting, "Engine Valve Lash - Inspect/Adjust".
