NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids in Caterpillar machines.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Remove bolts (1) and remove cover (2) .
2. Remove the O-ring seal from cover (2) .
3. Install Tooling (A) on the outer axle. Fasten a suitable lifting device to Tooling (A) . Use
Tooling (A) with the lifting device and remove outer axle (3) from the machine. The weight
of the outer axle is 48 kg (105 lb).
4. Install Tooling (A) on the inner axle. Use Tooling (A) with the hoist and remove the inner
axle from the machine. The weight of the inner axle is approximately 28 kg (62 lb).

1. Install Tooling (A) on the inner axle. Fasten a suitable lifting device to Tooling (A). Align
the splines on the inner axle with the splines in the bevel gear and install the inner axle.
2. Use a suitable lifting device with Tooling (A) and install outer axle (3) .

3. Install the O-ring seal in cover (2). Put cover (2) in position on the final drive and install
bolts (1) that hold the cover in place.
Note: Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for all fluid capacities and proper
filling procedures.

Start By:
A. Remove the axles.

Do not remove two of bolts (1) that hold the planetary carrier to the
final drive.
1. Remove 34 bolts (1) that hold the planetary carrier to the final drive carrier.
2. Loosen two bolts (1) that were not removed approximately 25.4 mm (1 inch).
3. Install three 1/2 inch - 13 NC forcing screws (2) in planetary carrier (3). Tighten the forcing
screws evenly until the planetary carrier is against the bolts.

4. Adjust bolts (4) on Tooling (A) until dimension (X) is 168.4 mm (6.63 inch) and dimension
(Y) is 201.2 mm (7.92 inch).
5. Fasten a suitable lifting device to Tooling (A). Put Tooling (A) in position on the planetary
carriers, as shown.
6. Use three bolts (5) that were removed from the planetary carriers to install Tooling (A).
Install a nut (6) on each bolt in order to hold Tooling (A) to the planetary carrier.
7. Install guide pins (7) and remove bolts (1) .

8. Install Tooling (B) in order to hold the sun gear in position in planetary carrier (3) .
9. Remove the planetary carrier from the final drive. The weight of the planetary carrier is
approximately 603 kg (1330 lb).
Note: In order to disassemble the planetary carrier, refer to the Power Train, Disassembly
and Assembly, "Final Drive - Disassemble".

10. Remove Tooling (B) and sun gear (8) from the planetary carrier.
11. Remove thrust ring (9) from retainer (10) .
12. Install Tooling (C) under the final drive hub in order to hold the final drive hub in position
when retainer (10) is removed.
13. Install Tooling (D) in order to hold gear (11) in position when retainer (10) is removed.
Make sure Tooling (C) and (D) are in position to hold the hub and ring
gear in place when retainer (10) is removed.

14. Remove bolts (12) and retainer (10) from the final drive.
15. Remove thrust bearing (13) from retainer (10) .
16. Remove twenty pins (14) from the hub.
17. If necessary, remove seal (15) from the hub.

18. Fasten a suitable lifting device to Tooling (E). Put Tooling (E) in position in gear (11), as
shown.
19. Remove Tooling (D) from the final drive. Use Tooling (E) in order to remove gear (11) and
hub (16) as an assembly. The weight of the gear and hub is approximately 286 kg (630 lb).
20. Fasten a suitable lifting device and Tooling (F) to hub (16). Remove ring (17) and remove
the hub from gear (11). The weight of the hub is approximately 84 kg (185 lb).

1. Fasten a suitable lifting device and Tooling (F) to hub (16). Put the hub in position in gear
(11). Install ring (17) .

2. Put gear (11) and hub (16) in position in the final drive as an assembly with Tooling (E) .
3. Install Tooling (D) in order to hold the hub and gear in place in the final drive.
Note: Use a driver that is nearly the same diameter as the outside diameter of the metal seal
case. Do not use excessive force on a fully seated seal. Excessive force may deform the seal
case. Deforming the seal case may cause the seal to leak.
4. Use Tooling (G) and install seal (15) in the hub with the lip of the seal toward the inside, as
shown.
5. Install 20 pins (14) in the hub.
6. Install thrust bearing (13) in retainer (10) .

7. Put retainer (10) in position and install bolts (12). Tighten bolts (12) to a torque of 135 ± 20
N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft).
8. Remove Tooling (C) and (D) .
NOTICE
There must be metal to metal contact between the final drive hub and
retainer (10) .
9. Use a feeler gauge and measure the gap between the pins in hub (16) and retainer (10). The
distance between the pins and retainer (9) should be 0.08 ± 0.05 mm (.003 ± .002 inch).

10. Install bearing (9) in retainer (10) .
11. Install Tooling (B) in order to hold sun gear (8) in position in the planetary carrier.

12. Fasten a suitable lifting device and Tooling (A) to planetary carrier (3) .
13. The O-ring seals must be in position on the planetary carrier and in the final drive hub.
Note: The drain plug on the planetary carrier must be aligned with the small O-ring seal in
the final drive hub.
14. Align the planetary carrier gears with the gear in the final drive.
15. Install three bolts in order to hold the planetary carriers in position when Tooling (A) is
removed.
16. Remove Tooling (A) and (B) .
17. Install the remaining bolts (1). Tighten bolts (1). Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 1050 ± 150
N·m (775 ± 110 lb ft).
Note: Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for all fluid capacities and proper
filling procedures.
End By: Install the axles.

b. Remove the outer axles. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle-Remove".
c. If necessary remove the ladder. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Ladder- Remove".

1. Drain the oil from transmission and the bevel gear housing. Refer to Operation and
Maintenance Manual, "Transmission Oil - Change".
2. Adjust bolts (1) on Tooling (A) until dimension (X) is 127 mm (5.0 inch) and dimension
(Y) is 156.7 mm (6.17 inch).

3. Remove five bolts (2) from the sprocket segments.
4. Fasten a suitable lifting device to Tooling (A) and install Tooling (A) on final drive (3).
Adjust two bolts (4) until the head of bolts (4) are against final drive (3).
NOTICE
Do not remove three bolts (5) that hold the steering clutch and brake to
the frame.
5. Remove bolts (7) that hold the final drive, the steering clutch, and the brake to the frame.
6. Remove three bolts (6) that hold the final drive to the steering clutch and brake. Remove the
final drive from the machine. The weight of the final drive is approximately 2211 kg
(4874 lb).
