Start By:
A. Remove the tire and rim (front). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim -
Remove (Front)" in this manual.
NOTICE
Failure to properly assemble parts or failure to follow established
procedures can lead to damage of the parts and assembly.
To avoid damage to parts, always identify and mark the parts so that
they can be installed in the same location. Ensure that gear surfaces
align. Never force parts during assembly.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service
Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure.
Hot oils can cause burns.
To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the work
tool hydraulic circuit (boom, stick, bucket, and swing), travel circuits,
and the hydraulic oil tank at the filler cap before any hydraulic lines or
components are disconnected or removed.
Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap
is cool enough to touch.
1. Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic
System Pressure - Release" in this manual.
Note: This procedure can be performed in-chassis. The following procedure is out-of-
chassis for photographic purposes.

2. Rotate the final drive by hand. Position drain plug (5) , as shown.
3. Disconnect brake hose (1) . Put a plug in the end of the hose. Plugs prevent oil loss. Plugs
prevent the contamination of the system.
4. Remove drain plug (5) . Drain the oil into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The
capacity of each final drive is 1.5 L (1.59 qt).
5. If necessary, remove the lug nuts, the lockwashers and rings (3) from each wheel stud.

6. Remove two socket head bolts (2) from planetary carrier (4) .
7. Fasten a lifting strap to planetary carrier (4) . Fasten an appropriate lifting device to the
lifting strap.
8. Use a pry bar in each slot (M) . Use the pry bar to separate planetary carrier (4) from the
hub.
9. Use the following procedure to disassemble planetary carrier (4) :
a. Use the appropriate retaining ring pliers to remove retaining ring (6) that holds each
planetary gear in position.

b. Use Tooling (A) to remove each planetary gear (7) from the planetary carrier.
c. Remove thrust washer (8) .
d. Remove retaining ring (10) and the washer from both sides of each planetary gear
(7) . Remove roller bearing (9) from each planetary gear (7) .

10. Use the appropriate retaining ring pliers to remove retaining ring (11) from sun gear (12) .
11. Remove socket head bolt (13) . Remove sun gear (12) .
12. Remove gear (14) .

13. Use the appropriate retaining ring pliers to remove retaining ring (15) . Remove washer
(16) .
14. Remove thrust washer (19) . Remove four outer discs (18) . Remove three inner discs (17) .

15. Remove lockring (20) from spanner nut (21) .
16. Use Tooling (B) and Tooling (C) to remove spanner nut (21) .
17. Use two pry bars to remove ring gear (22) and brake piston (23) . Remove the ring gear and
the brake piston as a unit.

18. Use a hammer and a punch to remove brake piston (23) from ring gear (22) . Alternate
between the six holes in the ring gear during the removal of the brake piston. Alternating
between the six holes prevents the binding of the brake piston to the ring gear.
19. Use the following procedure to disassemble brake piston (23) .
a. Remove two rings (24) . Remove two seals (27) .
b. Remove six socket head bolts (25) , six nuts and six springs.
c. Remove plate washer (26) .
20. Remove O-ring seal (28) from hub (29) .
21. Remove O-ring seal (30) and the split ring from steering axle housing (31) .

Note: When hub (29) is removed from the front axle, outer bearing cone (32) and bushing
(33) will be loose.
22. Fasten Tooling (D) to hub (29) , as shown. Fasten an appropriate lifting device to Tooling
(D) . Remove the hub from the front axle housing.
23. Remove outer bearing cone (32) and bushing (33) from the hub.

24. Remove inner bearing cup (34) from hub (29) .
25. Remove seal (36) from hub (29) . Remove outer bearing cup (35) from the hub.
26. Remove the wheel studs, if necessary.
Note: If 8U-2356 Bearing has been replaced by 121-8167 Roller Bearing , refer to Step 28
for removal of the bearing cone.
27. Fasten Tooling (F) to inner bearing cone (37) . Fasten Tooling (E) to Tooling (F) . Remove
the inner bearing cone from the housing for the steering axle.

28. Use Tooling (G) , Tooling (H) , and Tooling (J) in order to remove inner bearing cone (37) .

Start By:
A. Remove the tire and rim (rear). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim -
Remove (Rear)" in this manual.
NOTICE
Failure to properly assemble parts or failure to follow established
procedures can lead to damage of the parts and assembly.
To avoid damage to parts, always identify and mark the parts so that
they can be installed in the same location. Ensure that gear surfaces
align. Never force parts during assembly.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

implement hydraulic circuit (boom, stick, bucket, and swing), travel
circuits, and the hydraulic oil tank at the filler cap before any hydraulic
lines or components are disconnected or removed.

Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap
is cool enough to touch.
1. Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic
System Pressure - Release" in this manual.
Note: This procedure can be performed in-chassis. The following procedure is out-of-
chassis for photographic purposes.
2. Install two M12 forcing screws (2) in brake drum (1). Tighten the forcing screws evenly in
order to remove the brake drum from the brake shoes. Use two people to carefully remove
the brake drum from the axle. The weight of the brake drum is approximately 29 kg (65 lb).
3. Rotate the final drive by hand until drain plug (4) is positioned at the bottom.
4. Remove drain plug (4). Drain the oil from the final drive into a suitable container for
storage or disposal. The capacity of each final drive is 1.5 L (1.6 qt).

5. Remove two socket head bolts (3) that hold the planetary carrier to the hub.
6. Use two pry bars to separate planetary carrier (5) from the hub. Remove planetary carrier
(5) from the wheel studs in the hub.
7. Remove sun gear (6), sleeve (7) and axle shaft (8) from the rear axle as a unit. Separate the
sun gear and the sleeve from the axle shaft. Use Tooling (C) to remove the retaining ring
from sleeve (7) .
8. Use the following procedure to disassemble planetary carrier (5) :

a. Remove thrust washer (9) .
b. Use Tooling (A) to remove retaining ring (10) that holds each planetary gear in
position.
c. Use Tooling (B) to remove each planetary gear (11) from the planetary carrier.

d. Remove snap ring (12) from each side of roller bearing (13). Remove the two washers
and roller bearing (13) .
e. Repeat Step 8.d for all four planetary gears (11) .
9. Remove two screws (14) and washer (15) .
10. Use the following procedure to remove spanner nut (16) :
a. Install 127-9304 Spanner and 123-6703 Centering Guide on spanner nut (16), as
shown. The spanner and the centering guide are part of Tooling (D) .

b. Install the 4C-6723 Socket, 6V-6080 Torque Multiplier and 1U-7093 Ratchet Wrench
on the end of the spanner nut, as shown. The socket, the torque multiplier and the
ratchet wrench are part of Tooling (D) .
c. Use Tooling (D) to remove spanner nut (16) .
11. Attach Tooling (E) to ring gear (17), as shown. Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling
(E) for support. Remove ring gear (17) .

Note: When hub (18) is removed from the rear axle, outer bearing cone (19) and the
bushing will come off with the hub.
12. Attach Tooling (E) to hub (18), as shown. Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (E) for
support. Remove hub (18), outer bearing cone (19) and the bushing from the rear axle.
13. Remove seal ring (20) from hub (18) .

14. Remove bearing cone (21) from hub (18) .
15. Remove bearing cup (22) from hub (18) .
16. Remove bearing cup (24) from hub (18) .
17. Remove O-ring seal (25) from hub (18) .
18. Remove ten wheel studs (23) from the hub, if necessary. Refer to Disassembly and
Assembly, "Wheel Stud Bolts - Remove and Install (Rear Axle)" in this manual.

19. Use a pry bar to remove round plate (26) from the wheel hub.
Note: During the removal of the brake springs, the brake shoe linings can be damaged. Use
a small wood block in order to protect the linings of the brake shoes during the removal of
the brake spring.
20. Position a small wood block (28) on the lining of brake shoe (29), as shown. Use Tooling
(F) to remove brake springs (27). Make sure that Tooling (F) reacts against wood block (28)
and does not react against the lining of brake shoe (29) .

21. Use a pry bar to remove locking plate (30). Locking plate (30) is located at the bottom on
the brake shoes.
22. Use Tooling (G) to remove two pins (31) .
23. Remove both brake shoes (29) from the anchor.
24. Disconnect the hose assembly that is connected to the back side of the brake cylinder. Put a
plug in the end of the hose assembly. Put a cap on the brake cylinder. Plugs and caps
prevent oil loss. Plugs and caps prevent contaminating the hydraulic system.

25. Remove two bolts (33). Remove brake cylinder (32) from the anchor.
26. Mark anchor (34) in order to ensure the correct orientation during the assembly.
27. Remove two socket head bolts (35). Make sure that the two bolts are separated by 180
degrees.

28. Install Tooling (H) in the place of the two bolts that were removed. Make sure that Tooling
(H) is screwed into the axle housing. Remove the remaining socket head bolts (35) that hold
anchor (34) to the axle housing. Remove the anchor from the housing for the rear axle.
29. Remove wheel hub (36) from the housing for the rear axle.
30. Remove O-ring seal (37) .
