Start By:
A. Remove the tire and rim (front). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim -
Remove (Front)".
B. Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic
System Pressure - Release".
Note: SERVICE DATA: TOOLING (ZZ) WILL NOT BE IDENTIFIED IN
PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE REMOVAL OR THE INSTALLATION. THIS TOOLING IS
SHOWN IN ORDER TO ASSIST THE EXPERIENCED SERVICEMAN.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool
Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure.
Hot oils can cause burns.
To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the work
tool hydraulic circuit (boom, stick, bucket, and swing), travel circuits,
and the hydraulic oil tank at the filler cap before any hydraulic lines or
components are disconnected or removed.
Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap
is cool enough to touch.
1. Drain the front final drives. Final drives with oil cooled disc brakes have approximately 2.0
L (.5 US gal).

2. Attach a suitable lifting device to carrier housing (2) .
3. Remove retaining bolts (1) .
4. Remove carrier housing (2) . The weight of carrier housing (2) is approximately 25 kg (55
lb).
5. Disconnect hose assembly (3) and plug.

6. Use Tooling (C) in order to remove retaining ring (4) .
7. Use Tooling (D) in order to remove planetary gears (5) from the housing.
8. Remove thrust washer (6) .
9. Remove retaining rings (8) and the washers from planetary gear (5) .
10. Remove roller bearing (7) from planetary gear (5) .

11. Use Tooling (H) in order to remove retaining ring (9) .
12. Remove washer (10) .
13. Remove hex bolt (11) .

14. Remove sun gear (13) .
15. Remove gear (12) .
16. Use Tooling (J) in order to remove retaining ring (14) .
18. Remove four discs (16) and three plates (17) .

20. Remove lockring (19) from spanner nut (20) .
21. Install Tooling (E) .

22. Install Tooling (E) in order to remove spanner nut (20) .
23. Install Tooling (F) , Tooling (B) , and a suitable lifting device in order to remove ring gear
assembly (21) .
Improper assembly of parts that are spring loaded can cause bodily
injury.
To prevent possible injury, follow the established assembly procedure
and wear protective equipment.
24. Remove nuts (22) and brake piston (23) from ring gear assembly (21) .

25. Remove bolts (24) and the springs from ring gear assembly (21) .
26. Remove O-ring seal (25) and the backup ring.
27. Remove retaining ring (26) from the gear assembly.

28. Use a hammer and a punch in order to remove brake piston (23) and ring (27) from ring
gear assembly (21) .
29. Remove seals (28) .
30. Remove backup rings (29) .
31. Remove O-ring seal (30) from hub assembly (31) .
32. Remove O-ring seal (32) , and the O-ring seal from spindle (33) .

33. Attach Tooling (F) , Tooling (B) , and a suitable lifting device in order to remove hub
assembly (31) .
34. Remove hub assembly (31) .
Note: When hub (31) is removed from the spindle the outer bearing cone (34) will be loose.
35. Remove bearing cone (34) from hub assembly (31) .

36. Remove inner bearing cup (35) from hub assembly (31) .
37. Remove seal (37) from hub assembly (31) .
38. Remove outer bearing cup (36) from hub assembly (31) .

39. Remove spacer (38) from spindle (33) .
40. Install Tooling (G) , Tooling (B) , and Tooling (A) .
41. Remove inner bearing cone (39) from the spindle.

1. Use Tooling (A) in order to remove brake drum (1).
2. Remove bolts (2) and housing (3).
3. Use Tooling (B) in order to remove retaining rings (4).
4. Remove gear assemblies (5) and thrust washer (6).

5. Remove retaining rings (7), shims (8), and bearing (9) from gear (10).
6. Remove gear (11) and coupling (12).
7. Use Tooling (D) in order to remove retaining ring (13) from coupling (12).

9. Remove bolts (15) and retainer (16).
10. Use Tooling (E) in order to remove nut (17).

13. Use Tooling (F) and Tooling (G) in order to remove bearing cone (19), spacer (22), and hub
assembly (20).
14. Remove bearing cup (23).

18. Use Tooling (G) and Tooling (H) in order to remove dust shield (27).

Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a
released spring force.
Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.
Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to
release the spring force.
19. Use Tooling (J) in order to remove spring (28).
20. Loosen bolts (29).

1. Install the O-ring seals on connector (40) . Install connector (40) in the spindle.
2. Install breather valve (42) in the spindle.
3. Install O-ring seal (41) in the spindle.
Note: Some spindle assemblies will have four plugs. If the plugs have been removed, use
Tooling (V) to install four new plugs in each spindle assembly.
