This document provides an overview of the COCOMO II models for estimating effort and schedule for software projects. It describes the Post-Architecture and Early Design models. Both models use the same approach for sizing the project (including reuse) and scale factors. The Post-Architecture model provides more detailed estimates once architectural information is available, while the Early Design model provides high-level estimates earlier to explore alternatives. The models estimate effort in person-months and schedule in calendar time using equations that factor in size, effort multipliers, and scale factors calibrated to past project data.
