Cloud-init is a set of services that handles early initialization and configuration of virtual machines. It retrieves user-data and metadata from cloud providers to customize VMs during boot. macvlan and ipvlan allow VMs and containers to have direct exposure to the host network by assigning them their own MAC/IP addresses without requiring a bridge. macvlan uses MAC addresses to separate traffic while ipvlan uses layer 3. OverlayFS is a union file system that stacks multiple directory and file layers to construct a single directory tree. As a Docker storage driver, OverlayFS stacks image layers marked as read-only with a writable container layer to make images and containers appear as a single filesystem, allowing file sharing between containers using the same image layers. OverlayFS consists of a read-only lower layer, a read-write upper layer, and an overlay that merges the two, allowing files to be read from or written to the upper layer without knowing about the underlying layer structure.

The primary requirements for OpenStack based clouds (public, private or hybrid) is that they must be massively scalable and highly available. There are a number of interrelated concepts which make the understanding and implementation of HA complex. The potential for not implementing HA correctly would be disastrous. This session was presented at the OpenStack Meetup in Boston Feb 2014. We discussed interrelated concepts as a basis for implementing HA and examples of HA for MySQL, Rabbit MQ and the OpenStack APIs primarily using Keepalived, VRRP and HAProxy which will reinforce the concepts and show how to connect the dots.

Storage tiering and erasure coding in Ceph (SCaLE13x)Sage Weil

Ceph is designed around the assumption that all components of the system (disks, hosts, networks) can fail, and has traditionally leveraged replication to provide data durability and reliability. The CRUSH placement algorithm is used to allow failure domains to be defined across hosts, racks, rows, or datacenters, depending on the deployment scale and requirements. Recent releases have added support for erasure coding, which can provide much higher data durability and lower storage overheads. However, in practice erasure codes have different performance characteristics than traditional replication and, under some workloads, come at some expense. At the same time, we have introduced a storage tiering infrastructure and cache pools that allow alternate hardware backends (like high-end flash) to be leveraged for active data sets while cold data are transparently migrated to slower backends. The combination of these two features enables a surprisingly broad range of new applications and deployment configurations. This talk will cover a few Ceph fundamentals, discuss the new tiering and erasure coding features, and then discuss a variety of ways that the new capabilities can be leveraged.

In this session we are going to look at the latest craze amongst developers with some Sysadmin responsibilities - Ansible. As with all trending technologies you can be led to believe that it is the new wonder drug (multi purpose in a jar - if you ain't ill it will fix your car). But in this case we will look at some of the key ways that automated provisioning, configuration and state management can actually cure some of the critical headaches you face securing and managing production infrastructure and Drupal sites - (as with all such wonder drugs seek the advice of your GP before radically changing your lifestyle). Also as a warning once you start delving deeper into the world of web security you'll need a pretty thick skin - denial was a comfortable place to be. We won’t be covering Ansible for use in local development with systems such as VLAD - that hopefully will be the subject of other presentations. Critically we are going to look at Ansible in a Drupal context with a focus on security and hopefully encourage participation in the development of tighter integration with Drupal site deployment and management as well as security defence measures. By the end of the session we hope to have been convinced that with the adoption of Ansible you will feel more secure, more efficient and more relaxed about managing your infrastructure and sites and also to show how the principles of collaboration common within the Drupal community can transpose with great effect to the Ansible community .
