• #9: This deck tells the story of how customers can move from Realizing Platform Value to the final stage of the SharePoint Customer Journey – Building Business Solutions. Present this deck to customers who have done a good job of deploying multiple SharePoint workloads across their enterprise with strong user adoption, and who are seeking to deliver more strategic business value by building or purchasing applications to sit on top of SharePoint.
• #10: The first organization represents the collaboration or “Initial Deployment” phase. This phase is aimed at providing a better way for people to work together. If you look at the key benefits users cite, they revolve around building collaboration environments - places to store and share information with increased user satisfaction over sending with email or putting things on file shares or sharing files externally through file-sharing services. They have search capabilities that they never had before because all the content has been centralized in one place, indexed, and made available to everyone in a highly secure fashion. Benefits that manifest in this stage are solid productivity gains, more effective teaming, and more effective lightweight project management. However, while users are happy with the collaboration benefits, we have also noticed the following:Collaborating with SharePoint has been so successful that there may be hundreds or thousands or tens of thousands of individual sites appearing in the organization. Often the organization hasn’t provisioned for scale in their environment, which results in degradation in the end-user experience over time because they’re starting to see bottlenecks in the infrastructure due to lack of proper planning. On top of that, you tend to find a stage where an information manager, records manager, librarian, or a compliance officer in the organization has some concerns about what type of information is out there and how it’s being used, how it’s being managed, and who has access to it.So, while there are great benefits that come from this phase of SharePoint deployment, there’s also opportunity to make it far more effective. The second organization we describe is the customer who has made a strategic bet on SharePoint from the start. The benefits they receive are characteristic of the Broad Adoption stage of the Customer Journey. This is an organization that’s looking to maximize the value of the out-of-the-box SharePoint experience. They’re looking to drive deeper workloads such as social computing, content management, more enterprise-class search, and business intelligence. They look at the core repository of knowledge and information and consider security and workflow, approvals, and who has access to files and when. They ask questions like:“What kinds of attributes are being applied to make it easier to find and sort through and manage over time?” “How do we build taxonomy around the content?” “How do we manage metadata to supply to the content to make the information in SharePoint easier to find and share?” They also place a layer of social networking or social computing over the top of the platform. The last organizational persona we found was the customer who has gone above and beyond. On top of approaching SharePoint from a strategic enterprise perspective and using out-of-the-box capabilities, they really start to explore SharePoint as an application platform. They look at what it means to surface relevant business information in context to people within a SharePoint environment because they have already successful rolled SharePoint out across the enterprise and users spend a lot of time there. That makes it a logical place to start to surface information from ERP systems, CRM systems, HR systems, SAP or PeopleSoft systems, Siebel, Microsoft CRM, and so on through a single enterprise portal: SharePoint. On top of that, they build custom-tailored applications. Now that they’re using SharePoint as a place to get better insight into what’s happening within the business, they’re starting to look at horizontal and industry capabilities that can be delivered through SharePoint. And in that space they have a number of options for decidingwhether they want to build custom codes, buy off-the-shelf solutions from our broad ISV ecosystem, or build no-code or declarative solutions by empowering end users to do more themselves.
• #11: The consolidation phase is about opening up all the capabilities of SharePoint to the wider organization and to start to turn off existing systems to realize significant cost savings. This is the phase where customers look at SharePoint for enterprise content management and think about turning off legacy ECM systems with high costs and maintenance. They’re looking at how they can consolidate BI initiatives into a single platform and single viewpoint of what’s happening in the organization. They’re starting to turn on social networking and ensure they can support traditional concepts like blogs and wikis, which are more dynamic communication methods. But how can those capabilities benefit a traditional content management repository? Taking content like tagging and writing and applying them to a classic knowledge repository can be very beneficial in terms of how people find information. That’s because typically an end user is more likely to be interested in content that has been rated highly by peers or that’s been described in a language that they understand as opposed to a more formal taxonomy. Many of these organizations have multiple content repositories. They may have some Documentum, FileNet, some open text, or solutions from CA or Oracle. They have a lot of different technologies and a lot of different types of integration that have to be developed, each of which are often one-off integration points. So there’s a significant expense in maintaining these systems that can now be turned off. If you look at the social computing space, we see customers buying dedicated social computing platforms and then realizing they have problems with governance, compliance, and records management. At same time, there are concerns that employees are starting to use technologies outside of the firewall to engage in social networking—such as Facebook and Twitter—which can create a risk for compliance. So it’s a phase where companies are looking to reduce their IT expenditures. Companies can reduce the number of systems and integration points they have to maintain because within SharePoint, they can work within a single platform. The main advice is to holistic approach what you’re up to. Really think carefully about what system you can retire, whether it’s appropriate to rip and replace existing technology, gradually retire technology, or implement a migration or hybrid scenario. Be clear about what lives where and when, be more concrete about what it is you’re trying to achieve, and get people on board with the plan. If you consider the kind of workflows that SharePoint provides, you’re going to need support from records managers, compliance officers, and a CFO to move BI into SharePoint platform. Customers in this phase should take a staged approach. Try to bring on one work load at a time. List the right supporters within the organization, get the right buy-in to bring things over one piece at a time. Because often if you try a big-bang approach, you find challenges in getting everyone on board and driving adoption. The next thing to think about is digging into information governance. In the previous collaboration phase, people focused on SharePoint governance—managing how SharePoint grows within your organization. But in this phase, you’re getting to a point where the majority of corporate intellectual information assets are going to reside in the SharePoint platform. That means you need to think about information governance. Focus on meeting regulatory requirements. This helps apply a more meaningful compliance story across the organization because it’s not just traditional content like Microsoft Word, Excel®, PowerPoint®, and PDF files. You now also have webpages, blogs, wikis, andlist items with announcements and more. Additionally, start to look at where you’re headed. This is the phase where you need to think about what kind of solutions you plan to build beyond this on the SharePoint platform. How you make sure you’re setting up for success as you look to extend the platform to deal with other requirements within your business. =========================During this last phase of the journey, customers are building tailored business solutions on the SharePoint platform. Customers may consider SharePoint as an application platform for a variety of reasons. SharePoint provides a wealth of opportunities to meet specific business requirements. That’s because SharePoint provides a wide range of capabilities that companies no longer need to develop internally. For example, consider the typical application development life cycle within an organization. It’s usually a whole set of things you have to build in order to support the organization. Each application needs to have its own security model, workflow engine, repository for storing information, and so forth. All these capabilities are provided by SharePoint out of the box. So by building an application on top of SharePoint, companies can immediately get a quick start. On top of that, SharePoint offers a framework for building declarative no-code solutions. Through capabilities like workflow and business connectivity services, which enable connections to backend systems and forms, you can build a wide range of solutions without having to write a line of code. That’s important because IT usually doesn’t have the bandwidth to deliver the majority of solutions. There may be small initiatives, but they’re important for the people who put in the request. You can enable people to satisfy their own requirements so you can remain focused on bigger-hitting applications that have a higher strategic value to the business.Another thing people look at when considering SharePoint as an application platform is the fact that it features a large ISV ecosystem. Then you have solutions where people are using SharePoint Designer. They’re building forms-based solutions that connect to existing backend systems. Finally you have custom development, which you either build or buy. This is the space where we see the highest level of satisfaction with the SharePoint platform. Customers with the highest level of satisfaction are those who build tailored business solutions with the SharePoint platform. They are more satisfied because they’re provisioning capabilities within a familiar environment that the business has asked for. One of the best ways to drive end-user adoption is to provide them with a solution that meets their specific requirements and is better than anything they’ve had to date. You need to take a close look at your application life cycle management: Who’s building solutions? Who’s buying them? How are the solutions are getting deployed into production? How are you managing changes with those solutions? You need to make sure you’re considering SharePoint as an enterprise platform because it’s not something to throw changes at, test things out, stand them up and tear them down. You need to thoughtfully approach how you deliver solutions into this environment. You need to not force everything into the SharePoint platform, either. There are many considerations required. Create a list of applications the business is looking for, which ones fit into each of the categories, what can be done with no code or with minimal work in a tool like SharePoint Designer or Microsoft Visio®. • #13: Historically, if you wanted to build a custom solution to meet the needs of your organization, you had to write code. The result was that you could only ever address a handful of issues at any given time due to the time and cost involved (both monetary and IT-resource). IT became a bottleneck and the business was frustrated.The point of this slide is to show that SharePoint solutions can deliver breadth and depth.SharePoint can empower the organization in many different ways with a wide range of solutions to solve large and small business problems.The types of solutions span three key roles within the organization.

• #18: Companies around the world are building custom solutions every day, and many of them share a common framework or common set of capabilities: security, repository services, auditing, and reporting.Companies should take these common services and build them into a set of reusable libraries, which can accelerate the application development life cycle, but has a high cost associated with maintaining and advancing the core libraries.By building on top of SharePoint, these capabilities are included and, in many cases, maintained by Microsoft (accessible through knowledge bases).
