UNIT OF COMPETENCY 1:
INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING COMPUTER SYSTEMS
LIST OF COMPETENCIES
UC1: Installing and configuring computer systems
This module covers the outcomes required in installing and configuring desktop
and workstation computers systems. It consists of competencies to assemble
computer hardware, install operating system and drivers for peripherals/devices,
and install application software as well as to conduct testing and documentation.
1. Assemble and disassemble computer hardware
2. Prepare installer
3. Install operating system and drivers for peripherals/ devices
4. Install application software
5. Conduct testing and documentation
Nominal Duration: 45 hours
At the end of this module, you MUST be able to:

LEARNING OUTCOME #1: ASSEMBLE COMPUTER HARDWARE
CONTENTS:
1. Safety procedures
2. Basic terms, concepts, functions and characteristics of PC hardware components
3. Familiarization with the various computer systems components and peripherals
Occupational Health and Safety Policy
Safety procedures:
- is a cross-disciplinary area concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of
people engaged in work. The goal of all occupational health and safety programs is to
foster a safe work environment.
- As a secondary effect, it may also protect co-workers, family members, employers,
customers, suppliers, nearby communities, and other members of the public who are
impacted by the workplace environment.
- Safety practices should be learned early and always adhered to when working with any
electrical device, including personal computers and peripherals.
- This is for the protection of not only the people working with them, but also for the devices
themselves. The basis for this process begins with your Occupational Health and Safety
Policies.
Personal Safety While Working Along With PC’s
- Computer equipment can be dangerous, and you or others
can be injured or even killed if you don’t follow proper
safety guidelines when working along PC’s.
Before you start to work on the computer, perform
the following steps in the sequence indicated:

Occupational Health and Safety Policy
Safety Precautions:
Safety procedures:
 Disconnect the power cord
 Do not remove components while computer is powered up
 Remove all jewelry
 Always use anti-static wrist strap when working on monitors
 When possible, try to avoid working in carpeted areas.
 Always use approved surge protectors or an Uninterrupted Power Supply.
 Never eat, drink or smoke while working on a computer
 If possible avoid using cell-phone while repairing
 Do not leave the computer unattended
 Use your senses
 Use 5’s
