WAYS IN
EXPLAINING
A CONCEPT
OBJECTIVES:
1. Explain a concept from various fields
through definition, explication and
clarification
2. Distinguish the way a writer explains
a certain concept from a given text
3. Display seriousness in doing the
given task/ activities
4. Practice productivity in accomplishing
the task
Introductory Activity
“ God is a concept by which we measure our pain”
John Lennon
What are the three significant words which
summarize the topic discussed in the previous
meeting?
Activity Proper:
 Eyes here!
1. Report to your assigned group.
2. Identify a problem in your community or school which you
are now currently experiencing.
3. Group 1- Write down a one paragraph description about the
problem.
Group 2- Think of a quote, a verse which will describe your
problem and expound it.
Group 3 - Identify the problem and its details
4. Mount the group’s output and assign a representative to
read it
Analysis
1. What is the problem all about?
2. How did you describe it?
3. How is the paragraph being
developed?
4. Why is it important to
understand a concept?
ABSTRACTION:
 Giving of inputs:
 Concept Paper - It is a preparation
before the proposal, which provides an
overview of the project, and help funding
agencies eliminate proposals that are
likely to be disapproved.
Three Ways of Explaining a Concept :
1. Definition- is the method of identifying a given term and making its meaning clearer.
It can be presented in three ways
i. Formal – explains a term to be defined, category and details
Example: Vitamin E is a light yellow fat- soluble vitamins that acts an anti- oxidant.
ii. Informal – is done through a parenthetical or brief explanation
Example : Tocopherol ( Vitamin E ) is naturally found in vegetable oil, fish and nuts
iii. Extended – a detailed way of defining and term and usually composed of at least
one paragraph ( formal and informal, comparison and contrast, narration, description ,
etc.)
Learning materials refer to both printed and non printed objects or items that
teachers use to facilitate language learning. Nowadays, materials are becoming more
and more sophisticated , incorporating authentic language……
 Signal Words for Definition:
as defined, for example , for instance. Is defined as, means, such as and to illustrate
2. Explication- is a method of explanation in
which sentences, verses, quotes or
passages are taken from a literary or
academic work and then interpreted and
explained in a detailed way
 Example: The poem titled “ The Road Not Taken”
by Robert Frost is about a man reflecting on a
choice he had once made. While the outcome of
his choice is not implied to be positive or negative
the speaker notes that the choice in itself and the
consequences of that choice have made a huge
difference in a way his life is unfolded….
3. Clarification: - is a method of
explanation in which the points are organized
from a general abstract idea to specific and
concrete examples
 Examples: Justice is a broad concept which encompasses a
wide set of ideas , most of which also branch out into similar
notions. For instance, it can refer to the sentencing of
criminal based on due process. When an individual gets
what he deserves outside the hands of the law, it is also
considered justice in some contexts. …….
 Signal words
After all, as an example, for instance, in other words, in
particular, specifically, to clarify, to be specific
Application
Distribute a cut out article in each group
and let them identify how the concept is
being explained.
Think of one concept related to your
track . Explain your chosen concept
using the assigned way of writing it. Your
explanation must be at least 50 words
Assessment: The task give in the application will serve as the formative assessment
of the class
 Analysis of the Learner’s Product- Written Work ,Essay
Scoring Rubrics
Criteria VGE GE SE LE N

Style
Proper use of the style
In writing a concept
Proper use of variety of sentences

Assignment:

showing the ways on explaining a concept. Paste them
on a short size bond paper
Concluding Activity:
The whole concept of treating people with dignity
and respect is a concept that isn’t a business concept,
it’s a life concept. It’s who you are at the end of the day.
