Human rights
According to Susan Moller Okin:
“Human rights as a claim to something crucial importance for human life”
Human rights are the basic right and freedom that belong to every person in the world, from birth
until death
We all belong to the group called human being. We are all entitled to Human Rights
Human rights are set of principle and rules that recognize and protect the dignity of all human
beings. They govern how individual human beings live in society and with each other, as well as
their relationship with the State and the obligations that the State have towards them.
These rights are not granted by any state so it doesn’t matter which ethnicity, culture, country,
gender or group we belong to.its our basic rights as a human being.
They range from the most fundamental
The right to life to those that make life worth living, such as the rights to food, education, work,
health, and liberty.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR),
The universal declaration of Human followed through the UN General Assembly in 1948,
changed into the first legal file to set out the essential human rights to be universally covered. It
is the foundation of all international human rights law that include 30 articles which provides the
principles and constructing blocks of current and future human right conventions, treaties and
other legal instruments
The 2 convents International Covenant for Civil and Political Rights and International covenant
for economic, social and cultural rights makes the international Bill of Rights
Kinds of Human right includes:
Human rights cover virtually every area of human activity.
 They include civil and political rights
Rights contained in the covenants of Civil and Political come under this category that see their
origin in the 13th century of Magna Carta
These rights refers to a person’s rights to take part in the civil and political life of their
community without discrimination or oppression
Examples:
Some of the civil and political rights include rights and liberty such as the right to vote, the right
to privacy, freedom of speech and freedom from torture.
 They also include economic, social and cultural rights,
These rights refers to social and economic rights which are considered to have been originated
in the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the Paris peace conference of 1919
These rights relate to a person’s rights to prosper and grow and to take part in social and cultural
activities.
Example:
This group includes rights such as the right to health, the right to education and the right to work.
 Collective Rights
Individuals are also the members of the such units, groups or communities and state, therefore,
international law not only recognise inalienable rights of individuals but also recognises certain
collective rights
Example:
This includes Right to self determination, Right to peace and development
Core principles of Human Rights
1-Inalienability
Human rights are inalienable. This mean that our right will always apply to us simply because
we are humans. They cannot be taken away from us by anyone. Our rights will not change even
if our circumstances of life change except in specific situations and according to due process. For
example, the right to liberty may be restricted if a person is found guilty of a crime by a court of
law.
2-interdependence
All human rights are indivisible and interdependent. This means that one set of rights cannot be
enjoyed fully without the other. This means that our rights comes in a full package. This is
because the protection of some rights depends on the protection of other rights. Our human rights
support one another and strengthen one another
3-Equality and non-discrimination
Article 1 of UDHR states: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights."
Freedom from discrimination, set out in Article 2, is what ensures this equality.
That means that every person has the right to equal opportunity and freedom
