Theories of Globalization
Homogeneity
Heterogeneity
Homogeneity
 Refers to the increasing sameness in the world as
cultural inputs, economi factors, and political
orientations of societies expand to create
common practices, same economies, and
similar forms of government.
Examples:
a. Religion
b. Americanization
c. Economy (neoliberalism, capitalism,
and the market economy)
d. Politics (McWorld)
e. Media
McDonaldization
It is the process by which Western
Societies are dominated by the
principles of fast food restaurants.
Involves the global spread of rational
systems, such as efficiency,
calculability, predictability, and
control.
Grobalization
Is a process wherein nations,
corporations, etc., impose themselves
on geographic areas in order to gain
profits, power, and so on.
Heterogeneity
 Refers to the creation of various cultural
practices, new economies, and political
groups because of the interaction of
elements from different societies in the
world.
 Refers to the differences because of either
lasting differences or of the hybrids or
combination of cultures that can be
produced through the different
transplanetary processes.
Glocalization
Global forces interact with local
factors or a specific geographic
area, the glocal is being produced.
Dynamics of Local and
Global Culture
Perspectives on Global
Cultural Flows
1. differentialism
2. hybridization
3. convergence
Cultural Differentialism
 Emphasizes the fact that cultures are essentially
different and are only superficially affected by
global flows. The interaction of cultures is
deemed to contain the potential for
catastrophic collision
Cultural Hybridization
Emphasizes the integration of local
and global cultures. Global flows
involve people, technology, finance,
political images, and media and the
disjunctures between them, which
lead to the creation of cultural
hybrids
Cultural Convergence
Cultures are deemed to be radically
altered by strong flows, while cultural
imperialism happens when one
culture imposes itself on and tends to
destroy at least parts of another
culture.
Stresses on homegeneity
Deterritorialization
It is more difficult to tie culture to
a specific geographic point of
origin
Globalization and Religion
 Factors that influence the widespread
dissemination of religion:
1. Information technologies
2. Transportation means
3. Media
Globalization and
Regionalization
Regionalization is a sort of counter-
globalization.
Managed globalization refers to all
attempts to make globalization more
palatable to citizens.
Perspectives on the Origin of
Globalization
 Hardwired
 Cycles
 Epoch
 Events
 Broader, More Recent Changes
Hardwired
Globalization was made possible
because man has a basic need to
make their lives better.
Cycles
Globalization has gone through
cycles. It will appear and disappear
Epoch
It does not treat globalization as
returning. It comes with waves and
each has its own origin.
Epoch
 Globalization of religion ( 4th
– 6th
centuries)
 European colonial conquest (late 15th
century)
 Intra-European wars (late 18th
to early 19th
centuries)
 Heyday of European imperialism (mid 19th
century to 1918)
 Post-World War II period
 Post-Cold War period
Events
 Specific events are considered as an origin of
globalization.
Broader, More Recent Changes
 The emergence of the United States as the
global power (post-World War II)
 The emergence of Multinational corporations
 The demise of Soviet Union and the end of the
Cold War
Global Demography
Global Migration
Ang Mundo sa Mata ng Isang OFW
 Find a former or a current OFW to be interviewed. Your
respondent’s name should not be revealed in class to
protect the person’s identity and ensure anonymity.
 Use the following guide questions ( you may add
additional questions):
- How long have you stayed abroad?
- What are the purposes of your stay?
- what were your most unforgettable experiences there?
How will you describe them, good or bad?
- How will you compare the Philippines with other countries
in the future? Why or why not?
Share to the class the results of your
interview and your personal insights
about your respondent’s experience?
1. The perspective of the person who

Metaphors of Globalization
1. Solid
2. Liquid
1. Solid – the social relationships
and objects remain where
they created.
. refers to barriers that prevent
or make the difficult movement
of things.
Natural and man-made
Natural – landforms and bodies of
water
Man – made – Great wall of China
and Berlin Wall
Liquid – it takes the shape of the
container and is not fixed.
- refers to the ease of
movement of people, things,
information, and places in the
contemporary world
Zygmunt Bauman’s ideas
1. Liquid phenomena change quickly and their
aspects, spatial and temporal, are in continuous
fluctuation.
2. The movement is difficult to stop.
3. The forces made political boundaries more
permeable to the flow of people and things
(Cartier, 2001)
Examples:
a. Global finance – space and time are
crucial elements

structured around small, local
communities with production
typically being done in family
settings

periods begins to bear fruit in the
form of population growth,
reductions in absolute poverty levels,
and more diverse job opportunities
High Mass Consumption
Technological growth of the earlier
periods begins to bear fruit in the
form of population growth,

Editor's Notes

  • #17: Concern about security
  • #28: 1. If one sees it as positive, one can say that it is a unifying force. On the other hand, it creates greater inequalities among nations - negative
  • #32: It limits the access to things
