A study of 507 UK SMEs revealed low awareness of corporate identity fraud, with only 56% recognizing the issue and many believing it is increasing. Corporate identity theft, often via hijacking through fraudulent document submissions, costs businesses an estimated £50 million annually, yet 87% of SMEs were unaware of Companies House loopholes that facilitate such fraud. The report highlights the need for better data protection practices and greater awareness among SMEs to mitigate risks associated with corporate identity fraud.
