Black Power And The Civil Rights Movement
How accurate is it to say that the growth of Black Power was the most important factor in the
weakening of the civil rights movement in the 1960s? Black power is a political slogan that was
aimed to promote the ideas of the black racial group. There have been mixed views on weather it
weakened the civil rights movement or strengthened it, this involved many factors. Some of the
thing's that weakened the movement was the use violence, organisation and leadership and the
CORE ideas and the message of the black power. However some people disagreed that Black Power
weakened the movement as other factors like the Impact of the Vietnam War and the failure of
Kings campaigns for the reasons like the difference between the north and south. One of the main
reasons that the Civil Rights movement was weakened was because of the use of violence from the
Black Power in order to get their message across. This was a contrast to other movements like the
National Association for the advancement of coloured people otherwise known as the NAACP as
other groups used peaceful tactics Unlike the Black Power who thought peaceful tactics weren't
effective and wouldn't get them anywhere. The Black Panthers had a radical agenda that didn't want
to work with the American Government they wanted a revolution not a slow change that was what

In what ways, and for what reasons, did the African American struggle for civil rights in the United
States change between the early and late 1960s?
The civil rights movement was an influential movement that has been taking place in America for
many years. Victories during this time helped to raise hope for African Americans during this
influential movement. In the beginning of the movement there was a focus on nonviolence, and the
non–violent techniques began to pay off in the early 1960s. As the time progressed the struggle for
African Americans during the civil rights in the United States. Towards the ending of the period
hope was lost when major civil rights activists were assassinated. In the early 1960s non–violent
techniques began to pay off with sit–ins, marches and other forms of protest. For example, on May
4th, 1961, 13 young activists traveled through the south known as the freedom rides. This was
nonviolent, and this was effective. Also, four African American students in North Carolina started a
Sit–In in a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter. The students were not served and workers refused
to serves them. The students stayed at the counter because they were allowed to stay there, but were
refused service. Many others in the south protested in similar ways, and 6 months later they were
finally served in the diner. These non–violent sit–in were effective during this period. Nonviolence

The strategy of violence was a divisive force in the Black community; many African American
protestors were indecisive in which way to fight for their rights.
Violence also proved to be unproductive because it only caused more resistance and chaos in time of
confrontation. Violent protests such as riots ended up damaging the Black Community. African

Whites were afraid to be labeled as racially moderate, and typically had to join the side of white
supremacy for many reasons, among them the fact that class had previously aligned African–
Americans and poorer whites in a fight against poverty, Brown elevated racial status above class.
Also, the decision made those in power in the South exert their disproportionate political power to
keep the state government in their hands. Finally, some Southerners who normally would not care
about race were swayed by the fact that the federal government was trying to impose a decision in

First of all, she suggests that the term black power emerged out of a broader attempt of African

Courage to Dissent helps readers understanding of the Civil Rights movement. Brown–Nagin wrote
about the issue that was going on during this time when it pertains to politics, housing, public
accommodations, and schools. It highlighted major issue that was a problem in America but
especially Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta at this time became a huge stomping ground for African
American leaders because of the massive wave of blacks that lived in the city as well as the issue
that needed to be address to end segregation. The NAACP began to expand their leadership into
smaller components. A lot of local black officials became extremely involved in Atlanta. The city
wanted faster results, which focus on local activist and not head officials of the NAACP. One leader
that was mention a lot in the book was A.T Walden. A.T Walden was the first black attorney in the
state of Georgia. One of Walden accomplishments was the civil rights cases to help the pay for black
teachers in Georgia. Through Walden and other leaders in Atlanta, changes were made in the city.

Black is Beautiful. Black power movement believed that black folks have run out of patience seeing
their people dehumanized as if they are common animals that worth nothing on earth. They believed
that it is time for blacks' to take control of their selves instead of been brainwashed and polluted by

There is little debate among historians that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Congressman John Lewis
are arguably two of the most important men in the Civil Rights Movement. Both of these men, Dr.
Martin Luther King, in context of his involvement with the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference, and John Lewis, in context of his involvement with the Student Nonviolent
Coordinating Committee, left indelible impacts on the trajectory and success of the civil rights

Through the mid 1900's, the black movement began in hopes of creating a better future around a
certain view that was based around social and political aspects. The Black Power movement came
about due to the fact that over the recent years, non–violent actions were not combatting racism and

With stagnation there would be no awareness to a social issue. Looking further into King's letter,
another crucial point that he brought up is that without significant activism the oppressing party
would never give up what they wanted them to. Also, to make the problem politically present they
had to present the problem in a way in which everybody would see the growing tensions in the
community. This is later talked about in King's "direct–action program" with him creating an issue
that makes for a political change. He felt that the direct–action would create direct changes to the
current problem. A crucial point that really brought me to an emotional thought is when King
mentioned his daughter crying. The mention of his daughter and her not being able to go to theme
parks was an upsetting moment. This point brought up a relatable perspective that added a unique
thought to his argument. In summary King makes some very relatable points that when looking back
now make's us see how he really helped move the civil rights movement along and cause real

Looking at the outside article of "Black Panther Party: 1966–1982" by Michael X. Delli Carpini we
see that the Black Panther Party did not share the same exact ideals as Dr. King. Although they did
advocate strongly for equal rights for black communities they did not have the same patience that

A. Malcolm X ideology as well as his viewpoints have always differed from the viewpoint of the
majority of people and as well as the more "acceptable" way of thinking in society.
B. The focus of this speech will be to look into the pros and cons of X and as well to have a better
overview of his thought process. We will examine some of the many doctrines of Malcolm X–
which were his "common enemy" theory, idea of can one go against their own race for the greater

Amy Carmichael was born in Millisle, Ireland, on December 16, 1867, to parents David and
Catherine Carmichael.
As a young woman, she felt sorry for the factory girls in her town and, with several friends' support,
started a church for them. This work progressed as almost four hundred women and girls attended
her daily meetings, but she knew her calling was even bigger than this.
In 1891, she started the process to become a missionary to China at the age of twenty–four, but was
turned back to due to poor health. Amy finally decided to go to Japan, but met with many
difficulties, as she found the language impossible, the missionary community at odds, and then
became ill. After only a short stay, she returned home to England.

Nobody wanted a group of caste–breaking, Christian women sheltering runaway girls as their
neighbor, but Amy finally found an out–of–the–way place called Dohnavur, and her and her little
family moved in.
From there, her work only got bigger. More and more girls from all over India showed up at her

A further legislation put in to place was in 1957. The Civil Rights Act addressed the situation of
voting rights, where only 20% of Black Americans had passed the test in order to vote. Congress
passed the act to ensure all Americans could vote and forbade any person from interfering with
anyones right to vote, in actuality little was done to enforce the Act, and the situation remained.
Though, 3 years later, the Act was amended by requiring local authorities to keep thorough voting
records. However, records showed that the acts only increased the number of votes by a dreary 3%.

In motorcross it's all about the bike you ride. With so many manufacturers it's hard to decide which
bike you want. Each manufacturer has different tools to persuade people to buy their newest greatest
bike. Between commercials, free giveaways, meet and greets, and short videos posted online, they
have a good chance of winning some buyers. Personally the biggest advertisement that grabbed my
eye as a young teenager was the posters sold. As a thirteen year old American teenager, I wanted to

This book makes clear that the struggle for racial equality was nationwide and not just isolated to
certain geographical locations. A common misconception about the civil rights movement is that
blatant racism was a problem only encountered in the Deep South. However, Waiting 'Til the
Midnight Hour does a great job of clarifying this misconception and showing the many elements of
the struggle for justice that blacks from coast to coast experienced.
One of the most elements of the book is the evolution of the organization called SNCC. SNCC
(Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) was founded in conjunction with the lunch counter

to practice slow, tedious and patient voter registration drives in the most dangerous parts of the

The Civil Rights movement in the 1960's birthed the most prominent figures in the battle against
racism in the United States. Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. are immortalized as the men
who stood up and spoke out during the most crucial time in US History for African American
activism. Though often brought up in the same vein, the two had complete opposite ideology about
how to reach equality. Their influence created many prominent groups in the 60s against
mistreatment of African Americans, including the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee
(SNCC). According to the name of this group, they were a nonviolent team of young black activists
that stemmed from MLK's Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Apparent in their
name, they shared the same peaceful approach as MLK, but over time and as the hardships of the
movement began to callous the young group they shifted towards the 'by–any–means–necessary'

what were the accomplishments? Stokely Carmichael wrote a book called Black Power and in it he
wrote about how black people in that time did not accept segregation. Martin Luther King also made
important points in his speeches about segregation and how during this time black people decided to
make a change. The movement in the Alabama Black Belt lasted the longest and many people do not
acknowledge that fact. Even after all the protests started to fade away from the headlines, black
people in Alabama continued to protest for freedom. Many black citizens in Alabama began to
realize that there were other white people in Alabama who also wanted to end segregation. In
Lowndes County, Alabama, there was a rich man who owned thousands of acres of land, named
Harrell Hammonds. Hammonds was a probate judge who raised cattle and grew cotton on his farm.
Hammonds was also an aristocratic politician. Many people noticed Hammonds as being against
segregation. Hammonds argued in a court of law that everyone should be treated equally no matter
the color of their skin. Later in his life, Hammonds also gave his support for black people to be able

Stokely Carmichael Kwame Toure, better known as Stokely Carmichael, was one of the most
prominent civil rights figures in our history. Born in Trinidad, he became a citizen at the age of 13.
Stokely and his family moved to an Italian and Jewish neighborhood where he was one of the few
African Americans. He attended one of the most prestigious high schools, Bronx High School of
Science where he remained one of the few faces of color among his white elite counterparts.
Carmichael became very popular around his classmates, attending parties, dating white women, and
playing sports. While Stokely was aware of the racial tensions that ensued, he never realized until
later in life how differently he was perceived from his white counterparts. One evening upon
graduating high school, Stokely finally felt his calling to join the movement. Carmichael was
watching a television newscast that showed young African Americans protesting the racial
injustices. "When I first heard about the Negroes sitting in at lunch counters I thought they were a
bunch of publicity hounds." He watched as these people were knocked off stools, ketchup thrown in
