teacher of Alexander the Great
• His writings cover many subjects. including physics, metaphysics, poetry,
theatre, music, logic, thetoric, linguistics, politics, government, ethics, biology.
and zoology.
• Aristotle's writings were the first to create a comprehensive system of Western
philosophy
• encompassing ethics, aesthetics, logic, science, politics, and metaphysics.
According to Aristotle, there are decent individuals in the world. These are the people who are the
epitome of excellence—both in mind and in character. His term for moral perfection—éthikai
aretai—is commonly translated as moral excellence or moral virtue. The emphasis is on the mix of
traits that make a person the type of ethically admirable person that he is when we speak of a
moral virtue or an excellence of character. At the start of Book II of the Nicomachean Ethics,
Aristotle provides the following definition of virtue: "Excellence of character, then, is a state
concerned with choice, lying in a mean relative to us, this being defined by reason and in the way
in which the man of practical wisdom would determine it. Now it is a mean between two vices, that
which depends on excess and that which depends on defect". In Aristotle's view, good character is
based on two naturally occurring psychological responses that most people experience without
difficulty: our tendency to take pleasure from self-realizing activity and our tendency to form friendly
feelings toward others under specific circumstances. Based on his view, virtually everyone is
capable of becoming better and they are the ones responsible for actions that express (or could
express) their character (Stanford Encyclopedia).
What is Moral Character?
Moral character is an assessment of an individual's enduring moral qualities. It encompasses a range of
attributes, including virtues like empathy, courage, fortitude, honesty, and loyalty, as well as good behaviors or
habits. Moral character distinguishes one individual from another, and on a cultural level, it defines and unites a
social group. Psychologist Lawrence Pervin defines moral character as "a disposition to express behavior in
consistent patterns of functions across a range of situations."
Moral character is a concept that highlights an individual's uniqueness. It encompasses the qualities and traits
that differentiate one person from another, influencing their actions and expressions. It represents "human
excellence" or the distinctiveness of one's character. While the concept of virtue emphasizes this
distinctiveness, it ultimately involves the combination of qualities that define an individual. This definition
allows for diverse perspectives on moral character. Despite their differing arguments, philosophers agree on
the importance and centrality of character to human nature.
