This document discusses DevOps vs ITIL and how their goals differ. DevOps focuses on resilience, mean time to recovery, pulling work, risk taking and flow, while ITIL emphasizes strength, mean time between failures, pushing work, safety and queuing work. It notes the business perspective is that IT moves too slowly, is unresponsive and projects are behind schedule. Release management is discussed as an ITIL process to help avoid introducing problems during new releases. The document advocates managing various lifecycles together to better deliver value and addresses relationships between processes and products.
What is Agile Service Management? Why Is it Important? ITSM Academy WebinarITSM Academy, Inc.
There has been a lot of buzz lately about the need for IT to be more “agile”. While the term Agile is freely used, there is not a clear definition of what “being agile” actually means, particularly in the context of IT support and service management. This webinar explores the concept of Agile Service Management and how agility helps IT service providers better meet the rapidly changing requirements of business and customers.
This presentation outlines how Suncorp has adopted Agile scrum and Lean kanban to effectively and efficiently deliver IT Service Management. This presentation was given at the BMC Remedy User Group forums in Sydney & Melbourne, Australia in November 2013.
Agile Service Management: An introduction - Bas BlankenTOPdesk
With the speed of technological development and the growing dependence on technology, it is increasingly important for organisations to be able to change rapidly. More and more organisations are opting for agile transitions, scrum and kanban boards. But what does it actually mean to be ‘agile’ as an organisation? And how does this fit in with the world of service management? In this presentation you will get to know the agile mindset, and you will learn what you can already start with the next day.
IT Pro Webinar Series: Agile Service Management Automation with Service Manag...Cireson
Join the experts at Cireson to realize the power of automation with System Center Service Manager & Orchestrator. This webinar will cover key insights and tips for utilizing these powerful platforms in ways that best serve the analyst and IT department through automation and beyond.
AGENDA
-Put the power of automation into the hands of those who need it most, the analyst
-Remove the common barriers to dynamic process workflows
-Demystify the Service Catalog with common requests that go the extra mile
-Easily provide instant gratification to end users and IT operations alike
-Ask the experts your questions during Q & A
The document discusses bringing DevOps benefits to IT service management through an agile approach. It addresses common perceptions of ITIL and DevOps that can create barriers. The three ways of DevOps - flow, feedback, and continual learning - are presented along with relevant ITIL processes to investigate in each area. Adopting agile principles for ITSM design is recommended to allow faster feedback and better process integration. Change management is highlighted as an area that could leverage automation and examine desired change rates. Large-scale adoption is noted as challenging but promising great results by blending old and new capabilities.
Itsm governance and infrastructure as codedesktophero
This document discusses how IT service management (ITSM) governance can enable and support infrastructure as code (IAC) practices in an organization. It provides three key takeaways: 1) ITSM governance is a differentiator for enterprise adoption of IAC by ensuring quality and meeting customer needs, 2) ITSM governance should not be an obstacle and can be achieved through continuous integration/continuous delivery principles, and 3) lean principles and value stream mapping can be used to understand how people, processes, and technology fit together in ITSM.
The document discusses how ITIL and DevOps approaches can work together at a large bank, ING. It describes how ING transitioned to more agile development methods over time from 2011-2015. There was initially a divide between risk management wanting to use full ITIL and DevOps teams finding ITIL too administrative. However, the document proposes ways to make ITIL processes more lean and integrated with agile approaches. For example, reserving sprint capacity for incidents, minimizing technical debt, and automating configuration management. The conclusion is that ITIL and agile/DevOps are not in conflict and both provide value when the processes are made lean and both sides understand each other's expertise.

Blending ITIL, Agile, DevOps and LeanUX at Auto Trader UK
This webinar discusses the impact of DevOps on ITIL implementations. It begins with introductions of the presenter and objectives. The topics to be covered are outlined and include explanations of ITIL, DevOps, how they complement each other, and the impacts of DevOps on ITIL implementations. ITIL is described as a set of practices for IT service management focusing on aligning IT services with business needs. DevOps is defined as stressing communication and collaboration between software developers and IT operations. The webinar argues that ITIL and DevOps can complement each other by embracing their shared goals and through practices like configuration management. It explores impacts such as introducing smaller, more frequent changes to ITIL processes and transitioning
DevOps is a cultural and professional movement that stresses communication, collaboration and integration between software developers and IT operations professionals. It focuses on practices like continuous integration, continuous delivery, and continuous deployment to accelerate the development and delivery of desired functionality and fixes. DevOps is not a replacement for frameworks like ITIL and COBIT but rather focuses on how work gets done. It promotes concepts like multi-disciplinary teams, automation, and measuring outcomes.
The document compares the traditional waterfall model and siloed approach to development (IT) with the DevOps approach. With waterfall and silos, components were developed and managed in isolation by specialist teams, which led to quality issues, delays, and lack of collaboration between teams. DevOps embraces a collaborative culture with shared goals and optimized system flows between development, operations, and other functions. This approach leverages practices like automation, cloud technologies, and continuous integration/delivery to allow for faster innovation and higher quality through greater transparency, accountability, and opportunities for feedback and improvement.
DevOps Kaizen: Practical Steps to Start & Sustain an Organization’s Transform...Rundeck
Keynote Presentation by Damon Edwards at JAX DevOps London, April 4, 2017.
We all love the aspirational DevOps talks about companies achieving blistering speed and dazzling nimbleness. But improving your own organization’s performance – from where they are now to performance levels equal to the industry leaders – seems like a very long and difficult road. What is missing in most organizations? A repeatable system that empowers teams to find and fix their own problems.
This is a prescriptive talk about empowering and transforming organizations using a methodical — and totally reasonable – Kaizen (Continuous Improvement) approach. We’ll look at ways of combining known techniques like value stream mapping, Lean waste analysis, and improvement kata in order to fix organizational, process, and tooling problems. This talk isn’t about mythical silver bullets or vague philosophies. This talk is about taking a fresh look at proven Lean techniques that already work in high-performing IT organizations

Agile and Lean support and maintenance of IT Services and Information systemsJaroslav Procházka
This presentation deals with agile and lean support and maintenance of IT services. Agile pproaches are considered as software development approaches mostly, but the usage of agile principles and techniques also brings a lot of benefits to the support and maintenance. Common support and maintenance standards, recommendations and methods are process oriented and omit human aspect that leads to low innovativeness and lack of proactive approach. Another current challenge perceived by companies and researchers is connection between IT and business, namely how IT contributes to business. This presentation takes a critical viewpoint of current approaches supported by facts and evidence. To solve mentioned issues, we define agile and lean support and maintenance principles and control framework for improvement and implementation of these principles in IT services. This framework respects human nature with cognitive science, motivation and typology research as solid basis. The described approach was piloted in 13 IT services. Achievements are enclosed as verification of practical results and benefits.

This document discusses reconciling Agile Continuous Delivery practices with more traditional ITIL change management frameworks. It acknowledges tensions between the two approaches but outlines how adopting smaller, more frequent releases integrated with tooling like Jenkins, Pulp, and RPM packaging can help satisfy requirements for both camps. Regular, well-defined releases delivered through a continuous integration/delivery pipeline allow changes to flow smoothly through development, testing, and production environments while maintaining control and visibility for operations teams. With experience and process improvements, relationships can evolve from a normal change approval process to a more streamlined standard pre-approved model.

DevOps Beyond the Buzzwords: What it Means to Embrace the DevOps LifestyleMark Heckler
Session presented at CodeMash 2016.
DevOps is a hot topic, but it’s a bit ambiguous. What do developers really need to know about DevOps? What is it? What ISN’T it? What difference does it make? We’ll start by examining “DevOps”, what it means to embrace it, and the various personnel involved. We consider the potential benefits associated with a DevOps approach and the risks associated with adopting it…and with not adopting it. We take a quick look at some of the tools and platforms that can be used to implement a productive DevOps environment, including (but not limited to):
* Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) software
* Infrastructure Build Automation tools
* Virtualization, Containerization, and Cloud options
Finally, we run a live scenario using several of the tools discussed to demonstrate the key components of a DevOps-committed lifestyle. We start from nothing, using available tooling to build the target platform in a scriptable, repeatable fashion…then demonstrate effective use of CI/CD software for a more streamlined and effective software build/test/deploy cycle…and finally show how containers and cloud services form the foundation upon which everything else is built.
Devops is about 3 things: 1) Automation of IT 2) Cross disciplinary teams and 3) Learning from production. These 3 elements support organizations directly in becoming digital, client-driven and data-oriented enterprises.
This document summarizes a presentation on DevOps given in Austin, Texas in 2012. It discusses the history and evolution of DevOps from 2009 to the present, focusing on key aspects like culture, automation, measurement and sharing. Specific cultural values and behaviors that support DevOps are identified. Challenges that some organizations face in adopting DevOps like resistance to change and lack of collaboration are also addressed. The presentation concludes by providing resources for learning more about implementing DevOps practices.

This document discusses Agile Service Integration and Management (SIAM). It describes SIAM as a framework for managing multiple IT service providers in a consistent and efficient way to meet user needs. The document outlines four dimensions of enterprise agility - portfolio strategy alignment, dealing with size and complexity, collaboration throughout the lifecycle, and integrating external parties. It then discusses drivers for SIAM including delivery speed, cost reduction, and focus on innovation. Finally, it proposes an Agile approach to implementing SIAM through sprints focused on establishing agreements, processes, and behaviors and continually improving through experimentation.
This presentation explores the recent evolution of multidisciplinary approaches. We've seen Agile being used to develop new software releases better, quicker and cheaper than before by involving the business in iterative and incremental development activities. This often resulted in a backlog of potentially shippable releases waiting for the high-procedure IT Ops department to get around to deploying them. So folk used DevOps to get the deployment process sorted out by working on highly-automated continuous integration and deployment. Great! We've got the functionality into production! But wait - where's the value? Amazing as it seems after this Agile and DevOps revolution, no business benefits have been realized. Value is only actually realized when the users use their information systems effectively and efficiently. Organization lose on average 7.6% productivity due to IT issues and almost half of this is caused by poor use. Take a moment to reflect on your own business users.
Do you believe that they could get more value out of investments in IT? Do you think that they really understand the data in the systems and are not making costly mistakes based on misinterpretation? Is anybody monitoring how well the information systems are being used and helping users proactively? This is unfortunately often not the case. So after improving development and deployment of application releases, the next step is to improve how information systems are actually used. Just as Agile has facilitated closer collaboration between the business and IT for development, and DevOps has done the same for development and IT operations, there’s now a call to action to close the IT value circle by improving how IT operations and the business collaborate. The key word here is engaged. Follow this presentation to learn more...
This document provides an overview of DevOps for recruiters, including what DevOps is, why it is important, and how to identify the right candidates. DevOps refers to a collaboration between development and operations to accelerate the delivery of software and ensure the reliability of production systems. It aims to break down silos and shift focus to delivering business value. Recruiters should understand DevOps transformations, look beyond job titles, and assess a candidate's alignment with DevOps principles like automation, collaboration, and continuous delivery. The document also shares information about DevOpsGuys, a consulting firm that provides DevOps services.
WinOps Conf 2015 - Steve Thair - Why we need a DevOps on Windows ConferenceWinOps Conf
In this opening keynote Steve Thair (@TheOpsMgr) from DevOpsGuys talks about why we need a DevOps on Windows conference, what DevOps is, "Enterprise DevOps", Outsourcing and lots of other stuff.
When organisations make the transition to Agile ITIL seems to be the least popular thing to talk about. Because ITIL is all about the rules and administration, things that Agile is not about, right? But in an Enterprise organisation there is still a lot of value in an ITIL implementation for Service Management. And are ITIL and DevOps really not compatible? In this talk we discuss how me adapted our ITIL processes to match the new DevOps organisation. Using the best of both worlds to their mutual benefit. We call this adaptation of our ITIL implementation Agile ITSM.
This presentation was originally given at the DevOps Enterprise Summit 2015 in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in San Francisco on the 19th of October 2015.
5 Ways ITSM can Support DevOps, an ITSM Academy WebinarITSM Academy, Inc.
Presenter: Jayne Groll, President, ITSM Academy
There is much debate about the relevancy of ITIL and ITSM in a new DevOps world. The truth is that DevOps does not negate the need for service management, it validates it – with some adaptation to be faster and more agile. This presentation will demonstrate five ways that ITSM processes can be adapted to and support emerging DevOps practices.

Summary
DevOps adoption can be bottom-up or top-down, but requires buy-in from management and alignment with business goals. The document describes strategies for implementing DevOps practices aligned to business objectives, including focusing on culture, automation, measurement, and sharing. DevOps stresses communication and collaboration between software developers and IT operations to accelerate delivery of quality software through practices like continuous integration, delivery, and deployment.
To many people ITIL seems like the antithesis of Agile, with process-heavy, manual checks and approval gates a blocker to rapid delivery. However, at its core ITIL recommends iterative and continual improvement of software services based on the ‘Plan, Do, Check, Act’ (PDCA) cycle of Deming, an approach also central to DevOps. In this talk we’ll explore how – if implemented appropriately – ITIL and Agile can complement each other for a DevOps approach to iterative evolution of successful software systems.
From our talk at Unicom DevOps Summit on 26th March 2015 in London.
Most manifestations of DevOps contribute to faster, more reliable and cheaper development and delivery of IT-related services and products.
Significant additional benefits are to be gained by improvements outside the scope of current mainline DevOps thinking, in the identification and justification of investments and functionality. The key knowledge area that helps organizations achieve these additional benefits, is Business Value Optimization.
Join our 30-minute webinar with the author of the whitepaper our own DASA Ambassador Mark Smalley.
In this webinar, Mark will talk about the final chapters of his white paper;
- Fast flow from business to business
- From IT services to business goals
- DevOps’ contribution to improved IT services and business goals
The document discusses implementing DevOps practices at scale across an organization. It emphasizes that DevOps requires widespread adoption of new processes, tools, and cultural attitudes. Achieving this level of adoption involves selling the benefits of DevOps to different stakeholders, identifying early adopters, and demonstrating strategic alignment. It also requires consistent practices and measurements across projects and locations through standardized tools and processes.
DOES15 - Damon Edwards - DevOps Kaizen Practical Steps to Start & Sustain a T...Gene Kim
Damon Edwards, Managing Partner, DTO Solutions, Inc
We all love the aspirational DevOps talks about organizations achieving blistering speed and dazzling nimbleness, right? But what can you do when you look internally at your own organization and everything feels complicated, contentious, and stuck? How do you overcome the silos, the legacy, and the entrenched behaviors that are making your DevOps problems seem so intractable?
This talk is about how to start and sustain a DevOps transformations in large and complex organizations using a methodical — and totally reasonable — Kaizen (Continuous Improvement) approach. This talk isn’t about mythical silver bullets or vague philosophies. This talk is about taking a fresh look at proven Lean techniques and empowering teams to find and fix what is getting in the way.
Jan de Vries - How to convince your boss that it is DevOps that he wantsAgile Lietuva
- We all know that we could implement DevOps a lot faster if we only would have commitment from our boss. We all know that there is a shiny business case for almost every DevOps implementation
- And we all know that the whole company will reap the benefits regarding speed, agility and stability once we implemented DevOps. Actually, it provides good, fast and cheap at the same time. So, what are we waiting for? What is your boss waiting for? What is C-level waiting for?
- That’s something we will do research on in this workshop. We will also share our research on this from the recent past.
- The workshop starts with a presentation about 7 practices that a company should adopt to be able to apply DevOps.
- The technique that we use is called Appreciative Inquiry. To tackle a problem, it discovers the best practices that work, the reason they work and how these combined practices can be used to avoid the problem ahead and create a strategic change. The aim is to build – or even rebuild – organizations around what works, rather than trying to fix what doesn’t.
- So we want to know what your boss is afraid of and what you have already tried to convince him that he is better off with DevOps. You will leave the workshop with the combined Appreciative Inquiry insights of all the attendees
Organizational Culture Change during a technology transformationisBullShit
What works for organizational and culture change? It is not easy, most attempts fail because a methodical, cautious, and timid in approach. Invoking the 'easy button' will inevitably lead to resistance, sabotage, subversion, and inaction. The remedy includes exterminating scared cows, dismantling internal fiefdoms, simplifying standard operating practices, and eliminate the ingrained ways of doing business. The approach needs to be rapid, ruthless, and offensive; as in it will offending some people.

You might have heard of Lean – Toyota & Boeing are among the best exponents of Lean thinking, but it’s used by almost all of the top 1000 blue chip companies to drive effectiveness. Simplistically, Lean involves studying all of the activities carried out during delivery of a product or service, improving those that add value and eliminating those that don’t. By identifying discontinuities and poorly coordinated or unproductive activities throughout the delivery team and supply chain Lean can eliminate waste and improve value.

#23: Claire
Key concepts:
Frequently when releasing software, information flows from left to right – i.e., from Dev to QA to Ops
It is less common, however, for right to left feedback – and little time is allocated to reacting to feedback when it is received
The second way stresses the importance of right to left feedback
In order for this to be successful, the feedback loops should be short so that information is received in a timely manner
Feedback should also be visible (e.g., via dashboards) to amplify the feedback
Without this feedback, teams lack the information needed to continually improve
With shorter feedback loops
Sharing and knowledge grow
Trust grows
We better understand our customers, both internal and external
We fix defects faster and are better able to prevent problems
Processes are improved resulting in better flow, faster delivery speeds and less reactive, unplanned work
