Domestic violence is broadly defined as a pattern of abusive behaviors by one or both intimate partners, including physical, sexual, emotional, verbal, and economic abuse. Physical abuse causes feelings of pain, injury, or harm through actions like hitting, kicking, or denying medical care. Sexual abuse uses force or threats to obtain unwanted sexual activity. Emotional abuse involves humiliation, control, withholding information, or making the victim feel diminished. Verbal abuse threatens harm through language. Economic abuse controls a partner's access to financial resources. While laws now recognize domestic violence as a problem, more still needs to be done to address issues across genders and reduce enabling factors.
