Introduction
Domestic violence is officially defined as:
• “An incident of threatening behavior , violence or
abuse(psychological ,physical, financial or emotional)
between who are or have been intimate partners or family
members.”
• Anybody can be affected by domestic violence and
anybody can be violator – irrespective of age ,race
,ethnicity, religion, class, disability, lifestyle or graphical
location
• It can take the form of physical ,psychological or economic
violence

Domestic violence (also named domestic
abuse or family violence) is violence or other
abuse by one person against another in a
domestic setting, such as in marriage or
cohabitation. It may be termed intimate
partner violence when committed by a spouse
or partner in an intimate relationship against
the other spouse or partner, and can take
place in heterosexual or same-sex
relationships, or between former spouses or
partners. Domestic violence can also involve
violence against children, parents, or the
elderly.

Types of domestic violence:-
Violence may be:-
• Physical
• Emotional
• Financial
• Psychological
Psychological or emotional violence :-
• Extreme jealousy
• Name calling or abuse
• Showing trust issues
• Public humiliation
Physical violence :-
• Hitting, punching ,kicking , slaping,pushing etc
• Refuse to help when sick, injured or disabled.
• Attempting to force miscarriage
• Using or threatening to use weapons.

• Forcing the person to work “under the table”
• Taking person’s earned income
• Preventing person from keeping a job
• Maintaining control of all family finances

• Financial issues
• Disagreement with intimate partners
• Jealousy and envy
• Use of alcohol & other drugs
• Insecurities
• Some cultural and religious practices
• Lack of knowledge
Major Causes
• These factors include male dominance in the family
• Other factors include employment opportunities,
economic influences,
• women access over power and resources, social
support
• network and societal norms regarding gender roles,
and power

Effects of Domestic Violence
• Domestic Violence may leave many harmfull effects
such as:-
• Death, illness, injury and disability of women
• Emotional & psychological trauma
• Depression,shame,anger & suicide
• Homelessness
• Use of alcohol & other drugs to deal with pain
Effects on victim:-
Domestic violence
Effects on children
• Ongoing depression and anxiety
• Find it hard to manage the stress
• Use bullying behavior or become a target of bullying
• Have a less empathy and less affection for others
• Eating and sleeping disturbance
• Emotional distress
• Low self esteem
• Self harm

Effects on Community:-
• Children growing up without learning about positive and
Respectful relationships
• Abusers going to prison
• Higher rate of alcohol and other drug use and mental
Health problem
• Domestic and family violence is estimated to cost the NSW
• Economy more than $4.5 billion each years

Control
The first step is to acknowledge that the violence is not your fault.
You should also know followling things:
Know your rights:
• Check out your legal rights.
• Every state has laws designed to protect against all forms of domestic
violence.
Get support:
• Making a decision to leave a situation where you feel unsafe
may be hard and scary.
Believe in yourself:-
• Plan ahead and be prepared.
• Talk to someone you trust.
• Seek out domestic violence shelters.
