SUSTAINABILITY AT
DUPONT NUTRITION & HEALTH
At DuPont Nutrition & Health, our approach to sustainability addresses our entire value chain. Life cycle assessments
of our ingredients have long given important insights into how our raw material sourcing and production activities
impact the environment. We also engage in partnerships with our customers to help them achieve their sustainability
targets and estimate the extent to which our solutions help reduce their CO2 emissions.
The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide 17 well-defined focus areas for taking action and ensuring
that we all play our part in solving today’s urgent global challenges. We support all 17, and there are six in particular
where we believe we can make the biggest impact.
These SDGs are a key reference point in our three-pillar sustainability strategy. During 2018, we took another step
towards integrating the goals in our business by developing a new tool for evaluating the sustainability contribution
of innovation projects. The tool will be implemented in 2019 and will enable us to prioritize innovation projects
with the biggest potential to leverage the SDGs.
Responsible production of safe, healthy and sustainable solutions for food and pharmaceuticals is a top priority
for us, our customers and consumers. In 2018, we announced further initiatives that will strengthen our ability to
support customers in this area – the establishment of a new clean-label hub and a global center of excellence for
meat alternatives.
This performance summary provides a brief overview of our main sustainability activities in 2018. More detailed
information is available at www.dupontnutritionandhealth.com/sustainability.html.
2018 Performance Summary

• Develop and implement a sustainable sourcing program for
90% of all bio-based raw materials, including palm, soy,
seaweed, locust bean kernels, wood and guar
• Priority goal: source 100% certified sustainable palm oil and
derivatives and implement sustainable palm oil sourcing
policy (based on Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil
segregated, mass balance and book & claim supply chains)
• Expand the scope of SEDEX sustainability assessments to at
least 100 direct suppliers and contract manufacturers
SUSTAINABLE SOURCING

2018 Activities in Brief
In 2018, we took another step towards integrating sustainability in our business by developing a sustainability scoring
system for product innovation. The objective is to prioritize innovation projects that receive a positive score for their
anticipated contribution to the SDGs – through our own supply chain, our customers’ supply chain and consumer health.
We work at several levels to improve the transparency of our value chain, reduce our environmental footprint and develop
solutions for healthy and sustainable foods. Some examples of initiatives and focus areas in 2018 are given here.
SUSTAINABLE SOURCING
Better management practices in seaweed farming
Seaweed is one of our most important raw materials. During 2018, we developed a new set of Best Management Practices
(BMP) for sustainably sourced seaweed in collaboration with the New England Aquarium in Massachusetts, USA. We are
now training smallholder farmers in Indonesia to meet our BMP criteria. The goal is to ensure responsible harvesting and
the farmers’ long-term livelihoods.
A joint force in support of sustainable agriculture
DuPont Nutrition & Health has joined the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) Platform – the global food and
drink industry platform for developing sustainable agriculture solutions. SAI Platform works with members and external
stakeholders to catalyze change and establish sustainable agriculture as a pre-requisite for doing business in the food and
drink supply chain.
SUSTAINABLE OPERATIONS
The move from coal to carbon-neutral energy sources
The transition from coal to wood chips is complete at our large manufacturing site in Grindsted, Denmark, where we
expect to achieve carbon neutral certification in early 2019. This brings us very close to eliminating coal-sourced energy
from all our sites. Our last remaining coal-powered site in Chile – representing less than 0.5% of our total energy
consumption – is currently seeking an alternative energy solution.
Water reuse program targets main water-consuming sites
During 2017/2018, we mapped our water consumption and explored options for reduction. This has resulted in the
development of a water reuse program targeted at the facilities that account for the biggest share of our total water
consumption. The program will be validated in 2019 and is planned for launch in 2020 in connection with an upgrade of
the sites’ wastewater treatment systems.
SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS
New hub to focus on healthier, clean-label foods
In 2018, we announced our plan to establish a hub for clean-label texturants at our Brabrand facility in Denmark. The
decision is part of our commitment to helping food manufacturers develop more sustainable, simpler and healthier foods.
From 2019, the hub’s team of scientists and engineers will be ready to start identifying new ways to convert sustainable raw
materials into clean-label solutions.
Center of excellence established for meat alternatives
Consumer concerns about the environment, health and animal welfare are driving demand for meat alternatives. Through
customer collaboration, we have expanded our knowledge of this category and, today, recognize it as an opportunity to do
more sustainable business. To support this, in 2018 we established a new global center of excellence for meat alternatives at
our facility in St. Louis, USA.
Our Priorities For 2019
• Scale up implementation of sustainable sourcing programs
• Invest in reducing our use of fossil energy and water while improving yields
• Advance sustainability in innovation and portfolio development by:
• Rolling out our sustainability scoring tool for product innovation projects
• Sustainability mapping of the current DuPont Nutrition & Health portfolio, based on the framework for
Portfolio Sustainability Assessment from the World Business Council for Sustainable Development
• Launch of clean-label hub for the development of healthier, more sustainable ingredient solutions
• Continue to use the SDGs to set our direction and partner with our customers and suppliers to achieve our
sustainability goals
