iNaturewatch Foundation
Background
 Change is Inevitable, And our environment is no exception.
 As our environment changes, so does the need to become
increasingly aware of the problems that surround it.
 With a massive influx of natural disasters, warming and cooling
periods, different types of weather patterns and much more,
people need to be aware of what types of environmental
problems our planet is facing.
 Some of them are small and only affect a few ecosystems, but
others are drastically changing the landscape of what we
already know.
Background
Major Current Environmental Problems
 Air Pollution
 Global Warming
 Natural Resource
Depletion
 Waste Disposal
 Climate Change
 Loss of Bio Diversity
 Deforestation
 Ocean Acidification
 Water Pollution
 Ozone Layer Depletion
 Acid Rain
 Urban Sprawl
 Public Health Issues
 Over Population
 Genetic Engineering
Significance
 Our planet is at the edge of a severe environmental crisis.
 Living in an era of instant information, we are finally
beginning to understand the consequences of our actions
and the impact they are having on our world and our
survivability as a species.
 People have been witnessing shortage of food, sky
rocketing fuel prices, increased global warming, and
changing weather patterns.
 The need for change in our daily lives and the movements
of our government is growing. We are now in a state of
planetary emergency, with environmental problems piling
up high around us.
Significance
 It's important to educate our self about what we have and
what we are losing by acting in ways that aren’t
environmentally friendly or energy efficient.
 If humans continue to harm nature, then there will be no
future to consider.
 We cannot physically stop our ozone layer from thinning,
yet there are still so many things we can do to try and fix
what we already know.
 By raising awareness in your local community and within
your families about these issues, we can help contribute
to a more environmentally conscious and friendly place
for us to live.
Introduction
What is Earth Day?
 An Annual event celebrated on April 22nd each year to
demonstrate the support for environmental protection.
 It was launched by the trio of U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson
(of Wisconsin), Harvard student Denis Hayes and a well-
known Eco-activist named Paul ErlichIt.
 It is the Largest Secular Observance in the world.
 A day dedicated to increase awareness about the Earth,
its issues and problems.
 It acknowledges the importance of our planet. Both adults
and kids become conscious about the strategies and
tactics which they can adopt in day-to-day life to ensure
cleaner environments.
Introduction
Events Igniting Environmental Movement
 The Santa Barbara Oil spill 1969,
spewed 3 million gallon of crude oil,
Killing thousands of birds, fishes and
sea mammals across the coast of
California(around 35miles).
 An Alarm about the potential dangers
and consequences of widespread
pesticide use.
 It raised public awareness and concern
for living organisms, the environment
and the inextricable links between
pollution and public health.
Introduction

global partners in 192 countries.
Introduction
Accomplishments
 The establishment of Environmental Protection Agency in
1970
 The Clean Air Act of 1970
 The Clean Water Act of 1972
 The Endangered Species Act of 1973
 The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976
 The Federal Occupational Health and Safety Act aimed at
“in-plant pollution”
How Relevant is Earth Day?
 Experts estimate we are losing 137 plant, animal and
insect species every single day.
 Around thirty million people in India (including children)
are sufferers of asthma and similar breathing difficulties
as a result of pollution.
 According to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD)
organization, outdoor air pollution is the fifth biggest
killer in India – in fact, around 100,000 premature deaths
occur annually in India as a result of air pollution.
 Two of the world’s top ten most polluted rivers are
located in India – the River Ganga and the River Yamuna.
Here are Some Facts
How Relevant is Earth Day?
 Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth’s land surface;
now it’s only 6% and experts estimate that the last
remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40
years.
 The Centre for Science and Environment (based in Delhi),
noted that the decline in India’s environmental standards
was related to river pollution, which is significantly worse
now than it was thirty years ago. Other related causes
included trash piling in cities and increased toxicity to the
air in urban areas.
 Measuring India as a whole, over 660 million people are
living in areas where pollution is higher than India’s safety
limits. This is over half of the country’s population.
Here are Some Facts
How Relevant is Earth Day?
 Practice recycling, which was nearly non-existent 40 years
ago.
 Depletion of the ozone layer has been controlled.
 Have alternative, energy efficient forms of energy, such as
CFL light bulbs.
Since Earth Day First Celebrated:
Then why is Earth Heath continuing to deteriorate?
 We are not at this state of Environment emergency
because we lack actions or failed to take steps, it’s
because of lack of reach and mass practice of these
actions.
 It’s better to be late, than Never; And the never can be
eliminated only through awareness.
Earth Day Celebration
 In 2018, The Rotary Club of Bengaluru,
India, launched 45-day long festival
titled ‘Avani’, with a number a events ,
all focused on saving ecology.
 The club’s theme is ‘Urban Ecology
Redefined’, aiming to raise public
awareness over urban ecology.
 Texas' hipster capital throws an all-
day celebration packed full of events
like bike demos, movement classes,
musical performances, and panels led
by environmental justice advocates.
 This year’s gathering will take place
on April 21 at Huston-Tillotson
University.
Earth Day Celebration
 Japan is the most eco-friendly
country in Asia, according to
Yale's Environmental Performance
Index.
 In Tokyo, Japan's capital, there's an
annual Earth Day celebration in
Yoyogi Park (April 21 and April 22),
which was created in 1964 as the
site of the Olympic Village for that
year's Summer Games.
 A tradition since 2001, the fest
attracts more than 100,000
visitors who come to hear live
music and peruse stalls selling
global cuisine and handmade
goods.
Tokyo, Japan
Earth Day Celebration
 Barcelona throws a memorable
Earth Fair at Parc Central de Nou
Barris (April 21-22), which includes
a farmers' market, artisan vendors,

 NYC goes all out for Earth Day with
events including the 5K Green Tour,
a crash course in street tree
identification in Brooklyn, and a
sustainably-focused block party at
Union Square.
Earth Day Celebration
 Vancouver, Canada is known for its
annual Earth Day parade and
festival (April 21), which features
live music and food trucks. A
tradition since 2011, the event was
initiated by a local high school's
climate justice group.
 At Portland State University's
Learning Garden Laboratory, where
attendees can hear about native
plants, local farms, and solar energy.
