Anxiety
in childhood
Do children have anxiety?
Anxiety disorder consists of a state of constant
worry or tension due to a feeling of fear or
uneasiness that, unlike stress, is prolonged (a
minimum of 6 months, depending on the type of
anxiety) and not a one-time occurrence
According to numerous studies, parenting style
has a significant relationship with the appearance
of this type of disorder, with fewer cases of
childhood anxiety occurring in families with a
democratic educational style (Aguilar-Yamuza, B.
et al, 2019 y Martín, N. et al, 2022)
02
Types
of anxiety
What anxiety disorders can arise during
childhood?
Some of the anxiety disorders included in the DSM-V include the following:
1. Separation anxiety disorder
2. Selective mutism
3. Specific phobia
4. Social anxiety disorder
5. Panic disorder
6. Agoraphobia
7. Generalized anxiety disorder
03
Educational measures
What to do with a student
with anxiety
The role of teachers is essential for the
treatment of children's anxiety, therefore, the
first step should be to detect the existence of
this disorder and for this it is necessary to
observe the students and their behaviors
What to do with a student with anxiety
Once an anxiety disorder has been detected we must carry out the following steps:
01
Inform the family: if we observe anxiety behaviors in the student, the first thing to
do is to discuss them with the family, ask if they have observed such behaviors at
home and recommend that they go to a pediatrician
What to do with a student with anxiety
Once an anxiety disorder has been detected we must carry out the following steps:
02
Identify when and why these behaviors arise: before implementing an action or
support plan, it is necessary to identify the moments when these behaviors arise
through analysis and observation
What to do with a student with anxiety
Once an anxiety disorder has been detected we must carry out the following steps:
03
Establish a support plan: always with the consensus of the family and through a
joint family-school work to carry out anxiety management activities at school and at
home, without forgetting the follow-up from pediatrics
04
Guidelines for managing
anxiety
Calming anxiety in the classroom
1. Know the activities that calm the students and the moments in which they tend to
become distressed
2. Encourage moments of calm
3. Provide specific spaces for calm (calm corner, for example)
4. Help students to create a routine
5. Encourage flexibility in schedules and tasks
