Enterprises today face a daily barrage of cyberattacks. Responding quickly to threats is crucial to avoiding a serious breach. To do this successfully, security teams need to monitor and analyze billions of data signals or events each day. They come in different form and format. Yet, existing security tools are struggling to keep up. Threats are going unnoticed, and remediation timelines are being pushed out. Overcoming these challenges requires a new approach to threat detection rooted in data science. Workday is a “pure SaaS” company, providing a suite of Financial and HCM (Human Capital Management) apps to about 2000 companies around the world, including more than 30% from Fortune-500 list. There are significant business and technical challenges to support millions of concurrent users and hundreds of millions daily transactions. Using memory-centric graph-based architecture allowed to overcome most of these problems.
As Workday grew, data transactions from existing and new customers generated vast amounts of valuable and highly sensitive data. The next big challenge was to provide in-app analytics platform, which for the multiple types of accumulated data, and also would allow using blend in external datasets. Workday users wanted it to be super-fast, but also intuitive and easy-to-use both for the financial and HR analysts and for regular, less technical users. Existing backend technologies were not a good fit, so we turned to Apache Spark.
In this presentation, we will share the lessons we learned when building highly scalable multi-tenant analytics service for transactional data. We will start with the big picture and business requirements. Then describe the architecture with batch and interactive modules for data preparation, publishing, and query engine, noting the relevant Spark technologies. Then we will dive into the internals of Prism’s Query Engine, focusing on Spark SQL, DataFrames and Catalyst compiler features used. We will describe the issues we encountered while compiling and executing complex pipelines and queries, and how we use caching, sampling, and query compilation techniques to support interactive user experience.
Finally, we will share the future challenges for 2018 and beyond.

At the heart of it is Comcast RDK providing the backbone of telemetry to the industry. RDK (Reference Design Kit) is pre-bundled opensource firmware for a complete home platform covering video, broadband and IoT devices. RDK team at Comcast analyzes petabytes of data, collected every 15 minutes from 70 million devices (video and broadband and IoT devices) installed in customer homes. They run ETL and aggregation pipelines and publish analytical dashboards on a daily basis to reduce customer calls and firmware rollout. The analysis is also used to calculate WIFI happiness index which is a critical KPI for Comcast customer experience.
In addition to this, RDK team also does release tracking by analyzing the RDK firmware quality. SQL Analytics allows customers to operate a lakehouse architecture that provides data warehousing performance at data lake economics for up to 4x better price/performance for SQL workloads than traditional cloud data warehouses.
We present the results of the “Test and Learn” with SQL Analytics and the delta engine that we worked in partnership with the Databricks team. We present a quick demo introducing the SQL native interface, the challenges we faced with migration, The results of the execution and our journey of productionizing this at scale.

Parallelizing Large Simulations with Apache SparkR with Daniel Jeavons and Wa...Spark Summit Across all assets globally, Shell carries a huge stock of spare part inventory which ties up large quantities of working capital. Over the past 2 years an interdisciplinary project team has produced a tool, Inventory Optimization Analytics solution (IOTA), based on advanced analytical methods, that helps assets optimise stock levels and purchase strategies. To calculate the recommended stocking inventory level requirement for a material the Data Science team have written a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) bootstrapping statistical model in R. Cumulatively, the computational task is large but, fortunately, is one of an embarrassingly parallel nature because the model can be applied independently to each material. The original solution which utilised the R “parallel” package was deployed on a single 48 core PC and took 48 hours to run. In this presentation, we describe how we moved the original solution to a distributed cloud-based Apache Spark framework. Using the new R User Defined Functions API in Apache Spark and with only a minimal amount of code changes the computational run time was reduced to 4 hours. A restructuring of the architecture to “pipeline” the problem resulted in a run time of less than 1 hour. This use case is important because it verifies the scalability and performance of SparkR.

Smack Stack and Beyond—Building Fast Data Pipelines with Jorg SchadSpark Summit There are an ever increasing number of use cases, like online fraud detection, for which the response times of traditional batch processing are too slow. In order to be able to react to such events in close to real-time, you need to go beyond classical batch processing and utilize stream processing systems such as Apache Spark Streaming, Apache Flink, or Apache Storm. These systems, however, are not sufficient on their own. For an efficient and fault-tolerant setup, you also need a message queue and storage system. One common example for setting up a fast data pipeline is the SMACK stack. Spark SQL Adaptive Execution Unleashes The Power of Cluster in Large Scale wi...Databricks Spark SQL is a very effective distributed SQL engine for OLAP and widely adopted in Baidu production for many internal BI projects. However, Baidu has also been facing many challenges for large scale including tuning the shuffle parallelism for thousands of jobs, inefficient execution plan, and handling data skew. In this talk, we will explore Intel and Baidu’s joint efforts to address challenges in large scale and offer an overview of an adaptive execution mode we implemented for Baidu’s Big SQL platform which is based on Spark SQL. At runtime, adaptive execution can change the execution plan to use a better join strategy and handle skewed join automatically. It can also change the number of reducer to better fit the data scale. In general, adaptive execution decreases the effort involved in tuning SQL query parameters and improves the execution performance by choosing a better execution plan and parallelism at runtime.
We’ll also share our experience of using adaptive execution in Baidu’s production cluster with thousands of server, where adaptive execution helps to improve the performance of some complex queries by 200%. After further analysis we found that several special scenarios in Baidu data analysis can benefit from the optimization of choosing better join type. We got 2x performance improvement in the scenario where the user wanted to analysis 1000+ advertisers’ cost from both web and mobile side and each side has a full information table with 10 TB parquet file per-day. Now we are writing probe jobs to detect more scenarios from current daily jobs of our users. We are also considering to expose the strategy interface based on the detailed metrics collected form adaptive execution mode for the upper users.

Hyperspace for Delta LakeDatabricks Hyperspace is a recently open-sourced (https://github.com/microsoft/hyperspace) indexing sub-system from Microsoft. The key idea behind Hyperspace is simple: Users specify the indexes they want to build. Hyperspace builds these indexes using Apache Spark, and maintains metadata in its write-ahead log that is stored in the data lake. At runtime, Hyperspace automatically selects the best index to use for a given query without requiring users to rewrite their queries. Since Hyperspace was introduced, one of the most popular asks from the Spark community was indexing support for Delta Lake. In this talk, we present our experiences in designing and implementing Hyperspace support for Delta Lake and how it can be used for accelerating queries over Delta tables. We will cover the necessary foundations behind Delta Lake’s transaction log design and how Hyperspace enables indexing support that seamlessly works with the former’s time travel queries.

OracleStore: A Highly Performant RawStore Implementation for Hive MetastoreDataWorks Summit Today, Yahoo! uses Hive in many different spaces, from ETL pipelines to adhoc user queries. Increasingly, we are investigating the practicality of applying Hive to real-time queries, such as those generated by interactive BI reporting systems. In order for Hive to succeed in this space, it must be performant in all aspects of query execution, from query compilation to job execution. One such component is the interaction with the underlying database at the core of the Metastore.
As an alternative to ObjectStore, we created OracleStore as a proof-of-concept. Freed of the restrictions imposed by DataNucleus, we were able to design a more performant database schema that better met our needs. Then, we implemented OracleStore with specific goals built-in from the start, such as ensuring the deduplication of data.
In this talk we will discuss the details behind OracleStore and the gains that were realized with this alternative implementation. These include a reduction of 97%+ in the storage footprint of multiple tables, as well as query performance that is 13x faster than ObjectStore with DirectSQL and 46x faster than ObjectStore without DirectSQL.

Parallelizing Large Simulations with Apache SparkR with Daniel Jeavons and Wa...Spark Summit Across all assets globally, Shell carries a huge stock of spare part inventory which ties up large quantities of working capital. Over the past 2 years an interdisciplinary project team has produced a tool, Inventory Optimization Analytics solution (IOTA), based on advanced analytical methods, that helps assets optimise stock levels and purchase strategies. To calculate the recommended stocking inventory level requirement for a material the Data Science team have written a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) bootstrapping statistical model in R. Cumulatively, the computational task is large but, fortunately, is one of an embarrassingly parallel nature because the model can be applied independently to each material. The original solution which utilised the R “parallel” package was deployed on a single 48 core PC and took 48 hours to run. In this presentation, we describe how we moved the original solution to a distributed cloud-based Apache Spark framework. Using the new R User Defined Functions API in Apache Spark and with only a minimal amount of code changes the computational run time was reduced to 4 hours. A restructuring of the architecture to “pipeline” the problem resulted in a run time of less than 1 hour. This use case is important because it verifies the scalability and performance of SparkR.

Combined, we refer to these tables as a ‘multi-hop’ architecture. It allows data engineers to build a pipeline that begins with raw data as a ‘single source of truth’ from which everything flows. Smack Stack and Beyond—Building Fast Data Pipelines with Jorg SchadSpark Summit There are an ever increasing number of use cases, like online fraud detection, for which the response times of traditional batch processing are too slow. In order to be able to react to such events in close to real-time, you need to go beyond classical batch processing and utilize stream processing systems such as Apache Spark Streaming, Apache Flink, or Apache Storm. These systems, however, are not sufficient on their own. For an efficient and fault-tolerant setup, you also need a message queue and storage system. One common example for setting up a fast data pipeline is the SMACK stack. SMACK stands for Spark (Streaming) – the stream processing system Mesos – the cluster orchestrator Akka – the system for providing custom actors for reacting upon the analyses Cassandra – the storage system Kafka – the message queue Setting up this kind of pipeline in a scalable, efficient and fault-tolerant manner is not trivial. First, this workshop will discuss the different components in the SMACK stack. Then, participants will get hands-on experience in setting up and maintaining data pipelines.

Spark SQL Adaptive Execution Unleashes The Power of Cluster in Large Scale wi...Databricks Spark SQL is a very effective distributed SQL engine for OLAP and widely adopted in Baidu production for many internal BI projects. However, Baidu has also been facing many challenges for large scale including tuning the shuffle parallelism for thousands of jobs, inefficient execution plan, and handling data skew. In this talk, we will explore Intel and Baidu’s joint efforts to address challenges in large scale and offer an overview of an adaptive execution mode we implemented for Baidu’s Big SQL platform which is based on Spark SQL. At runtime, adaptive execution can change the execution plan to use a better join strategy and handle skewed join automatically. It can also change the number of reducer to better fit the data scale. In general, adaptive execution decreases the effort involved in tuning SQL query parameters and improves the execution performance by choosing a better execution plan and parallelism at runtime.
We’ll also share our experience of using adaptive execution in Baidu’s production cluster with thousands of server, where adaptive execution helps to improve the performance of some complex queries by 200%. After further analysis we found that several special scenarios in Baidu data analysis can benefit from the optimization of choosing better join type. We got 2x performance improvement in the scenario where the user wanted to analysis 1000+ advertisers’ cost from both web and mobile side and each side has a full information table with 10 TB parquet file per-day. Now we are writing probe jobs to detect more scenarios from current daily jobs of our users. We are also considering to expose the strategy interface based on the detailed metrics collected form adaptive execution mode for the upper users.

The key idea behind Hyperspace is simple: Users specify the indexes they want to build. Hyperspace builds these indexes using Apache Spark, and maintains metadata in its write-ahead log that is stored in the data lake. At runtime, Hyperspace automatically selects the best index to use for a given query without requiring users to rewrite their queries. Since Hyperspace was introduced, one of the most popular asks from the Spark community was indexing support for Delta Lake. In this talk, we present our experiences in designing and implementing Hyperspace support for Delta Lake and how it can be used for accelerating queries over Delta tables. We will cover the necessary foundations behind Delta Lake’s transaction log design and how Hyperspace enables indexing support that seamlessly works with the former’s time travel queries.

OracleStore: A Highly Performant RawStore Implementation for Hive MetastoreDataWorks Summit Today, Yahoo! uses Hive in many different spaces, from ETL pipelines to adhoc user queries. Increasingly, we are investigating the practicality of applying Hive to real-time queries, such as those generated by interactive BI reporting systems. In order for Hive to succeed in this space, it must be performant in all aspects of query execution, from query compilation to job execution. One such component is the interaction with the underlying database at the core of the Metastore.
As an alternative to ObjectStore, we created OracleStore as a proof-of-concept. Freed of the restrictions imposed by DataNucleus, we were able to design a more performant database schema that better met our needs. Then, we implemented OracleStore with specific goals built-in from the start, such as ensuring the deduplication of data.
In this talk we will discuss the details behind OracleStore and the gains that were realized with this alternative implementation. These include a reduction of 97%+ in the storage footprint of multiple tables, as well as query performance that is 13x faster than ObjectStore with DirectSQL and 46x faster than ObjectStore without DirectSQL.

The Hive Think Tank - The Microsoft Big Data Stack by Raghu Ramakrishnan, CTO...The Hive Until recently, data was gathered for well-defined objectives such as auditing, forensics, reporting and line-of-business operations; now, exploratory and predictive analysis is becoming ubiquitous, and the default increasingly is to capture and store any and all data, in anticipation of potential future strategic value. These differences in data heterogeneity, scale and usage are leading to a new generation of data management and analytic systems, where the emphasis is on supporting a wide range of very large datasets that are stored uniformly and analyzed seamlessly using whatever techniques are most appropriate, including traditional tools like SQL and BI and newer tools, e.g., for machine learning and stream analytics. These new systems are necessarily based on scale-out architectures for both storage and computation.
Hadoop has become a key building block in the new generation of scale-out systems. On the storage side, HDFS has provided a cost-effective and scalable substrate for storing large heterogeneous datasets. However, as key customer and systems touch points are instrumented to log data, and Internet of Things applications become common, data in the enterprise is growing at a staggering pace, and the need to leverage different storage tiers (ranging from tape to main memory) is posing new challenges, leading to caching technologies, such as Spark. On the analytics side, the emergence of resource managers such as YARN has opened the door for analytics tools to bypass the Map-Reduce layer and directly exploit shared system resources while computing close to data copies. This trend is especially significant for iterative computations such as graph analytics and machine learning, for which Map-Reduce is widely recognized to be a poor fit.
While Hadoop is widely recognized and used externally, Microsoft has long been at the forefront of Big Data analytics, with Cosmos and Scope supporting all internal customers. These internal services are a key part of our strategy going forward, and are enabling new state of the art external-facing services such as Azure Data Lake and more. I will examine these trends, and ground the talk by discussing the Microsoft Big Data stack.

Why APM Is Not the Same As ML MonitoringDatabricks Application performance monitoring (APM) has become the cornerstone of software engineering allowing engineering teams to quickly identify and remedy production issues. However, as the world moves to intelligent software applications that are built using machine learning, traditional APM quickly becomes insufficient to identify and remedy production issues encountered in these modern software applications.
As a lead software engineer at NewRelic, my team built high-performance monitoring systems including Insights, Mobile, and SixthSense. As I transitioned to building ML Monitoring software, I found the architectural principles and design choices underlying APM to not be a good fit for this brand new world. In fact, blindly following APM designs led us down paths that would have been better left unexplored.
In this talk, I draw upon my (and my team’s) experience building an ML Monitoring system from the ground up and deploying it on customer workloads running large-scale ML training with Spark as well as real-time inference systems. I will highlight how the key principles and architectural choices of APM don’t apply to ML monitoring. You’ll learn why, understand what ML Monitoring can successfully borrow from APM, and hear what is required to build a scalable, robust ML Monitoring architecture.

Stage Level Scheduling Improving Big Data and AI IntegrationDatabricks In this talk, I will dive into the stage level scheduling feature added to Apache Spark 3.1. Stage level scheduling extends upon Project Hydrogen by improving big data ETL and AI integration and also enables multiple other use cases. It is beneficial any time the user wants to change container resources between stages in a single Apache Spark application, whether those resources are CPU, Memory or GPUs. One of the most popular use cases is enabling end-to-end scalable Deep Learning and AI to efficiently use GPU resources. In this type of use case, users read from a distributed file system, do data manipulation and filtering to get the data into a format that the Deep Learning algorithm needs for training or inference and then sends the data into a Deep Learning algorithm. Using stage level scheduling combined with accelerator aware scheduling enables users to seamlessly go from ETL to Deep Learning running on the GPU by adjusting the container requirements for different stages in Spark within the same application. This makes writing these applications easier and can help with hardware utilization and costs.
There are other ETL use cases where users want to change CPU and memory resources between stages, for instance there is data skew or perhaps the data size is much larger in certain stages of the application. In this talk, I will go over the feature details, cluster requirements, the API and use cases. I will demo how the stage level scheduling API can be used by Horovod to seamlessly go from data preparation to training using the Tensorflow Keras API using GPUs.
The talk will also touch on other new Apache Spark 3.1 functionality, such as pluggable caching, which can be used to enable faster dataframe access when operating from GPUs.

Simplify Data Conversion from Spark to TensorFlow and PyTorchDatabricks In this talk, I would like to introduce an open-source tool built by our team that simplifies the data conversion from Apache Spark to deep learning frameworks.
Imagine you have a large dataset, say 20 GBs, and you want to use it to train a TensorFlow model. Before feeding the data to the model, you need to clean and preprocess your data using Spark. Now you have your dataset in a Spark DataFrame. When it comes to the training part, you may have the problem: How can I convert my Spark DataFrame to some format recognized by my TensorFlow model?
The existing data conversion process can be tedious. For example, to convert an Apache Spark DataFrame to a TensorFlow Dataset file format, you need to either save the Apache Spark DataFrame on a distributed filesystem in parquet format and load the converted data with third-party tools such as Petastorm, or save it directly in TFRecord files with spark-tensorflow-connector and load it back using TFRecordDataset. Both approaches take more than 20 lines of code to manage the intermediate data files, rely on different parsing syntax, and require extra attention for handling vector columns in the Spark DataFrames. In short, all these engineering frictions greatly reduced the data scientists’ productivity.
The Databricks Machine Learning team contributed a new Spark Dataset Converter API to Petastorm to simplify these tedious data conversion process steps. With the new API, it takes a few lines of code to convert a Spark DataFrame to a TensorFlow Dataset or a PyTorch DataLoader with default parameters.
In the talk, I will use an example to show how to use the Spark Dataset Converter to train a Tensorflow model and how simple it is to go from single-node training to distributed training on Databricks.

Scaling and Unifying SciKit Learn and Apache Spark PipelinesDatabricks Pipelines have become ubiquitous, as the need for stringing multiple functions to compose applications has gained adoption and popularity. Common pipeline abstractions such as “fit” and “transform” are even shared across divergent platforms such as Python Scikit-Learn and Apache Spark.
Scaling pipelines at the level of simple functions is desirable for many AI applications, however is not directly supported by Ray’s parallelism primitives. In this talk, Raghu will describe a pipeline abstraction that takes advantage of Ray’s compute model to efficiently scale arbitrarily complex pipeline workflows. He will demonstrate how this abstraction cleanly unifies pipeline workflows across multiple platforms such as Scikit-Learn and Spark, and achieves nearly optimal scale-out parallelism on pipelined computations.
Attendees will learn how pipelined workflows can be mapped to Ray’s compute model and how they can both unify and accelerate their pipelines with Ray.

Re-imagine Data Monitoring with whylogs and SparkDatabricks In the era of microservices, decentralized ML architectures and complex data pipelines, data quality has become a bigger challenge than ever. When data is involved in complex business processes and decisions, bad data can, and will, affect the bottom line. As a result, ensuring data quality across the entire ML pipeline is both costly, and cumbersome while data monitoring is often fragmented and performed ad hoc. To address these challenges, we built whylogs, an open source standard for data logging. It is a lightweight data profiling library that enables end-to-end data profiling across the entire software stack. The library implements a language and platform agnostic approach to data quality and data monitoring. It can work with different modes of data operations, including streaming, batch and IoT data.
In this talk, we will provide an overview of the whylogs architecture, including its lightweight statistical data collection approach and various integrations. We will demonstrate how the whylogs integration with Apache Spark achieves large scale data profiling, and we will show how users can apply this integration into existing data and ML pipelines.
Raven: End-to-end Optimization of ML Prediction Queries
Raven: End-to-end Optimization of ML Prediction QueriesDatabricks Machine learning (ML) models are typically part of prediction queries that consist of a data processing part (e.g., for joining, filtering, cleaning, featurization) and an ML part invoking one or more trained models. In this presentation, we identify significant and unexplored opportunities for optimization. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first effort to look at prediction queries holistically, optimizing across both the ML and SQL components.
We will present Raven, an end-to-end optimizer for prediction queries. Raven relies on a unified intermediate representation that captures both data processing and ML operators in a single graph structure.
This allows us to introduce optimization rules that
(i) reduce unnecessary computations by passing information between the data processing and ML operators
(ii) leverage operator transformations (e.g., turning a decision tree to a SQL expression or an equivalent neural network) to map operators to the right execution engine, and
(iii) integrate compiler techniques to take advantage of the most efficient hardware backend (e.g., CPU, GPU) for each operator.
We have implemented Raven as an extension to Spark’s Catalyst optimizer to enable the optimization of SparkSQL prediction queries. Our implementation also allows the optimization of prediction queries in SQL Server. As we will show, Raven is capable of improving prediction query performance on Apache Spark and SQL Server by up to 13.1x and 330x, respectively. For complex models, where GPU acceleration is beneficial, Raven provides up to 8x speedup compared to state-of-the-art systems. As part of the presentation, we will also give a demo showcasing Raven in action.

Processing Large Datasets for ADAS Applications using Apache SparkDatabricks Semantic segmentation is the classification of every pixel in an image/video. The segmentation partitions a digital image into multiple objects to simplify/change the representation of the image into something that is more meaningful and easier to analyze [1][2]. The technique has a wide variety of applications ranging from perception in autonomous driving scenarios to cancer cell segmentation for medical diagnosis.
Exponential growth in the datasets that require such segmentation is driven by improvements in the accuracy and quality of the sensors generating the data extending to 3D point cloud data. This growth is further compounded by exponential advances in cloud technologies enabling the storage and compute available for such applications. The need for semantically segmented datasets is a key requirement to improve the accuracy of inference engines that are built upon them.
Streamlining the accuracy and efficiency of these systems directly affects the value of the business outcome for organizations that are developing such functionalities as a part of their AI strategy.
This presentation details workflows for labeling, preprocessing, modeling, and evaluating performance/accuracy. Scientists and engineers leverage domain-specific features/tools that support the entire workflow from labeling the ground truth, handling data from a wide variety of sources/formats, developing models and finally deploying these models. Users can scale their deployments optimally on GPU-based cloud infrastructure to build accelerated training and inference pipelines while working with big datasets. These environments are optimized for engineers to develop such functionality with ease and then scale against large datasets with Spark-based clusters on the cloud.

What Do Contribution Guidelines Say About Software Testing? (MSR 2025)Andre Hora Software testing plays a crucial role in the contribution process of open-source projects. For example, contributions introducing new features are expected to include tests, and contributions with tests are more likely to be accepted. Although most real-world projects require contributors to write tests, the specific testing practices communicated to contributors remain unclear. In this paper, we present an empirical study to understand better how software testing is approached in contribution guidelines. We analyze the guidelines of 200 Python and JavaScript open-source software projects. We find that 78% of the projects include some form of test documentation for contributors. Test documentation is located in multiple sources, including CONTRIBUTING files (58%), external documentation (24%), and README files (8%). Furthermore, test documentation commonly explains how to run tests (83.5%), but less often provides guidance on how to write tests (37%). It frequently covers unit tests (71%), but rarely addresses integration (20.5%) and end-to-end tests (15.5%). Other key testing aspects are also less frequently discussed: test coverage (25.5%) and mocking (9.5%). We conclude by discussing implications and future research.

Explaining GitHub Actions Failures with Large Language Models Challenges, In...ssuserb14185 GitHub Actions (GA) has become the de facto tool that developers use to automate software workflows, seamlessly building, testing, and deploying code. Yet when GA fails, it disrupts development, causing delays and driving up costs. Diagnosing failures becomes especially challenging because error logs are often long, complex and unstructured. Given these difficulties, this study explores the potential of large language models (LLMs) to generate correct, clear, concise, and actionable contextual descriptions (or summaries) for GA failures, focusing on developers’ perceptions of their feasibility and usefulness. Our results show that over 80% of developers rated LLM explanations positively in terms of correctness for simpler/small logs. Overall, our findings suggest that LLMs can feasibly assist developers in understanding common GA errors, thus, potentially reducing manual analysis. However, we also found that improved reasoning abilities are needed to support more complex CI/CD scenarios. For instance, less experienced developers tend to be more positive on the described context, while seasoned developers prefer concise summaries. Overall, our work offers key insights for researchers enhancing LLM reasoning, particularly in adapting explanations to user expertise.

Overall, pytest provides some advantages, including simpler assertion, reuse of fixtures, and interoperability. Due to such benefits, multiple projects in the Python ecosystem have migrated from unittest to pytest. To facilitate the migration, pytest can also run unittest tests, thus, the migration can happen gradually over time. However, the migration can be timeconsuming and take a long time to conclude. In this context, projects would benefit from automated solutions to support the migration process. In this paper, we propose TestMigrationsInPy, a dataset of test migrations from unittest to pytest. TestMigrationsInPy contains 923 real-world migrations performed by developers. Future research proposing novel solutions to migrate frameworks in Python can rely on TestMigrationsInPy as a ground truth. Moreover, as TestMigrationsInPy includes information about the migration type (e.g., changes in assertions or fixtures), our dataset enables novel solutions to be verified effectively, for instance, from simpler assertion migrations to more complex fixture migrations.
