By that, no single line of Java code has to be written and you can reuse your SQL knowhow. This lowers the bar for starting with stream processing significantly.
KSQL offers powerful capabilities of stream processing, such as joins, aggregations, time windows and support for event time. In this talk I will present how KSQL integrates with the Kafka ecosystem and demonstrate how easy it is to implement a solution using KSQL for most part. This will be done in a live demo on a fictitious IoT sample.

Developing cloud-native applications easily and efficiently presents significant challenges for many teams. This is because, in addition to implementing domain-specific features and microservices, developers are now often jointly responsible for building the required cloud services with Infrastructure as Code à la Terraform. Unfortunately, the associated high cognitive load quickly leads to overload and suboptimal solutions.
Crossplane is an open source add-on for Kubernetes that addresses this problem. Using Crossplane, one can declaratively build cloud infrastructure for all popular cloud providers without writing a line of code. In addition, there is the ability to create highly specific self-service APIs and abstractions that can then be applied very easily by feature teams.
This talk will demonstrate the practical use of Crossplane with its features in AWS and GCP, as well as the seamless integration with a GitOps approach.

Being in the payments space, Stripe requires strict correctness and freshness guarantees. We rely on Flink as the natural solution for delivering on this in support of our Change Data Capture (CDC) infrastructure. We heavily rely on CDC as a tool for capturing data change streams from our databases without critically impacting database reliability, scalability, and maintainability. Data derived from these streams is used broadly across the business and powers many of our critical financial reporting systems totalling over $640 Billion in payment volume annually. We use many components of Flink’s flexible DataStream API to perform aggregations and abstract away the complexities of stream processing from our downstreams. In this talk, we’ll walk through our experience from the very beginning to what we have in production today. We’ll share stories around the technical details and trade-offs we encountered along the way.

This talk will focus on an interesting node lifecycle management solution from AWSlabs called Karpenter, which is an alternative approach to probably the most frequently used Cluster Autoscaler. Kubernetes has hit a home run for stateless workloads, but can it do the same for stateful services such as distributed databases? Before we can answer that question, we need to understand the challenges of running stateful workloads on, well anything. In this talk, we will first look at which stateful workloads, specifically databases, are ideal for running inside Kubernetes. Secondly, we will explore the various concerns around running databases in Kubernetes for production environments, such as: - The production-readiness of Kubernetes for stateful workloads in general - The pros and cons of the various deployment architectures - The failure characteristics of a distributed database inside containers In this session, we will demonstrate what Kubernetes brings to the table for stateful workloads and what database servers must provide to fit the Kubernetes model. This talk will also highlight some of the modern databases that take full advantage of Kubernetes and offer a peek into what’s possible if stateful services can meet Kubernetes halfway. We will go into the details of deployment choices, how the different cloud-vendor managed container offerings differ in what they offer, as well as compare performance and failure characteristics of a Kubernetes-based deployment with an equivalent VM-based deployment.

Kubernetes has been one of the topics in 2017 and will probably remain so in 2018. In this hands-on technical workshop you will learn how best to deploy, operate and scale Kubernetes clusters from one to hundreds of nodes using DC/OS. You will learn how to integrate and run Kubernetes alongside traditional applications and fast data services of your choice (e.g. Apache Cassandra, Apache Kafka, Apache Spark, TensorFlow and more) on any infrastructure.
This workshop best suits operators focussed on keeping their apps and services up and running in production and developers focussed on quickly delivering internal and customer facing apps into production.
You will learn how to:
- Introduction to Kubernetes and DC/OS (including the differences between both)
- Deploy Kubernetes on DC/OS in a secure, highly available, and fault-tolerant manner
- Solve operational challenges of running a large/multiple Kubernetes cluster
- One-click deploy big data stateful and stateless services alongside a Kubernetes cluster

Cruise Control is an open source tool to make managing and operating Kafka much easier. It helps you perform these common tasks, but it’s also capable of automatically healing your cluster if brokers crash. With its UI you can easily do basic monitoring too.

Kubernetes has hit a home run for stateless workloads, but can it do the same for stateful services such as distributed databases? Before we can answer that question, we need to understand the challenges of running stateful workloads on, well anything. In this talk, we will first look at which stateful workloads, specifically databases, are ideal for running inside Kubernetes. Secondly, we will explore the various concerns around running databases in Kubernetes for production environments, such as: - The production-readiness of Kubernetes for stateful workloads in general - The pros and cons of the various deployment architectures - The failure characteristics of a distributed database inside containers In this session, we will demonstrate what Kubernetes brings to the table for stateful workloads and what database servers must provide to fit the Kubernetes model. This talk will also highlight some of the modern databases that take full advantage of Kubernetes and offer a peek into what’s possible if stateful services can meet Kubernetes halfway. We will go into the details of deployment choices, how the different cloud-vendor managed container offerings differ in what they offer, as well as compare performance and failure characteristics of a Kubernetes-based deployment with an equivalent VM-based deployment.
