The Protestant Reformation was an event which occurred within the Catholic Church
during the 16th century. This Reformation was prompted by Martin Luther s 95
theses which were a list of 95 criticisms towards the church. The Reformation formed
another branch of Christianity called Protestantism which is comprised of many
different Christian denominations including Anglican, Presbyterian, and Lutheran.

This essay will attempt to explain and asses what Bevereidges five giants were and
how they related to the 1930s and how far his 1942 report went towards defeating
them. Looking at each of the five Giants individually I will explain if a how they
were defeated.
Britain s provision of welfare underwent a massive overhaul in the middle of the
second World War .William Beveridgeplayed a key role in these changes by writing a

It is plain to see from the policies above that a comprehensive welfare system
offering benefits on a universal level was created from the report written by
William Beveridge. However, it was still subject to criticism. These
miscalculations and misjudgements meant the elderly, the disabled and the long
term unemployed still experienced poverty because the level of benefits were too
low. (Fraser 2003) Beveridge s vision was to have to little or no means tested
benefits, his idea was that very few people would fall into this category and it
would only be used as a safety net. That was not the case, more and more people,
mainly those on low incomes had to turn to means tested National Assistance benefit.

In conclusion the Welfare Statewas created on the principle that the state accepted a
responsibility to protect and promote the welfare of all citizens. It must be noted that
the system was designed to provide a national minimum, not reduce inequalities. I
have looked in detail at all aspects to combat the five giants and the popular support
when the Beveridge report was introduced. I have also looked at flaws in the system,
however the cornerstone of the Beveridgian welfare system, was left almost
untouched until the 1980 s.

Have you ever learned things the hard way? I sure have and I m sure you have too.
You would think that we would all learn that lesson the first time we experience it,
but sadly it seems to be one of those things we repeat... a lot! The following story
details one of my experiences where, despite having already learned the lesson, I
repeat it. For the most part my brothers and I love each other and treat each other
