In the early twentieth century, Zurich-based Carl Jung is a
follower in the new theories of psychoanalysis of Vienna-based
Sigmund Freud, who states that all psychological problems are
rooted in sex. Jung uses those theories for the first time as part of
his treatment of Sabina Spielrein, a young Russian woman bro-
ught to his care. She is obviously troubled despite her assertions
that she is not crazy. Jung is able to uncover the reasons for Sa-
bina’s psychological problems, she who is an aspiring physician
herself. In this latter role, Jung employs her to work in his own
research, which often includes him and his wife Emma as test
subjects. Jung is eventually able to meet Freud himself, they, ba-
sed on their enthusiasm, who develop a friendship driven by the-
ir lengthy philosophical discussions on psychoanalysis. Actions
by Jung based on his discussions with another patient, a fellow
psychoanalyst named Otto Gross, lead to fundamental chan-
ges in Jung’s relationships with Freud, Sabina and Emma. Those
relationships are also affected by Freud’s unbending views of
psychoanalysis and its use, by Sabina’s growing self-awareness
of what drives her emotionally, regardless of their negative root
causes, and by Emma’s feelings of guilt over not being able to
produce a male heir for her husband.

The Apollo 13 mission was not supposed to be historic. Three
astronauts, Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert were sup-
posed to go to the moon, a destination that people seemingly
were no longer interested in. In fact, their broadcasts from space
didn’t even make the news. And then the words came: „Ho-
uston...we’ve got a problem.”
On Earth, the astronauts’ families wait in horror as the reports
continue to flow in. Bad reports. Gene Kranz, the flight director
in Houston, works around the clock, hoping, just hoping, that so-
mething will actually go right. And Ken Mattingly, who, two days
before the launch, was stripped of his chance to go into space
due to the measles, attempts to figure out a way to get his friends
back home. And suddenly, the news media becomes attentive
as the whole world watches, praying for the safe return of three
brave astronauts.
205, 000 miles from home, the three astronauts watch as
their crippled craft jettisons oxygen into space and carbon dioxi-
de levels rise to brain damaging levels. They watch as the tem-
perature drops past freezing, icing the windows and numbing
their bodies. And they watch as their spaceship gets farther and
farther from Earth, realizing that they may never see home aga-
in.

Renowned actress Maria de Medeiros directs this sweeping
historical drama set in Portugal about the heady days leading
up to April 25, 1974, when that country was finally freed from 40
years of Fascist rule. The film opens with a series of grisly black
and white photographs of Portuguese war atrocities committed
against its colonies -- Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau.
Antonia (de Medeiros) is a teacher who begs her minister-bro-
ther to release a couple of her students from the clutches of the
secret police. As a result, she herself gets captured, interroga-
ted, and tortured. At the same time, a young couple bid a tear-
ful adieu at the train station just as the man, Capt. Maia (Stefano
Accorsi) is drafted to fight in the colonies. Just before the youth
gets shipped off to Africa, he manages to persuade the soldiers
of a remote army outpost to rebel. Along with his buddies Lobao
(Fele Martinez) and Antonia’s ex-husband Manuel (Frederic Pier-
rot), Maia manages to storm a radio station and ultimately be-
siege the national guard barracks, which houses the president
and military advisors. This film was screened at the 2000 Cannes
Film Festival.~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

This film deals with the tragedy of the women survivors of the
Srebrenica genocide, or rather, the consequences of the horrors
they experienced - it is about women whose sole purpose in life is
to locate the bones of their loved ones and give them a decent
burial. Fifteen years later, they still want just one simple thing - the
truth. As a contrast, the film also deals with trivialities of modern
living, including obsession with different reality shows.

Both sides agree that on Jan. 30, 1972, a civil rights march
in Derry, Northern Ireland, ended with a confrontation between
some of the marchers and British army paratroopers. At the end
of the day, 13 marchers were dead and 14 in the hospital, one of
whom later died. No British soldiers were killed. An official inquiry
declared that the soldiers had returned the fire of armed mar-
chers. Some of the soldiers involved were later decorated by the
crown.
Beyond this agreement, there is a disagreement so deep and
bitter that 30 years later „Bloody Sunday” is still an open wound
in the long, contested history of the British in Northern Ireland.
A new inquiry into the events of the day was opened in 1998
and still continues today. Paul Greengrass’ film „Bloody Sunday,”
which shared the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival this year,
is made in the form of a documentary. It covers about 24 hours,
starting on Saturday evening, and its central character is Ivan
Cooper (James Nesbitt), a civil rights leader in Derry. He was a
Protestant MP from the nationalist Social Democratic Labour Par-
ty. Most of the 10,000 marchers on that Sunday would be Catho-
lic; that a Protestant led them, and stood beside such firebrands
as Bernadette Devlin, indicates the division in the north between
those who stood in solidarity with their co-religionists, and those
of all faiths who simply wanted the British out of Northern Ireland.

The story is set in the latter days of World War 2, against the
backdrop of fierce combat on the eastern front. Brother’s War is
based on real events. The western Allies push into Germany and
the Red Army fights its way towards Berlin. Churchill is worried
about Russia’s post-war plans for Europe but must not endanger
the increasingly threatened alliance between the west and Rus-
sia. A British military officer attached to the Red Army discovers
a Russian war crime against the Polish government in exile and is
seized by Stalin’s feared intelligence service. He finds unexpec-
ted help from an enemy and fellow prisoner, a German Captain.
They discover a common bond in Freemasonry and are bound
by honor, oath and secrets. They are joined by Anna, a beautiful
Polish nurse cast adrift on the tides of war. The three are pursu-
ed by A ruthless Russian commander through Germany carrying
a secret that can change the outcome of the world and the
fate of millions. Brother’s War was produced with strict attention
to historic accuracy and military detail and portrays the horrors
and heroism of desperate battles. The film also opens the door
into the ancient order of Freemasons and presents unmatched
insight on the real histories of these men, brothers all, who have
fought in every war for hundreds of years.

„Children of Glory” commemorates Hungary’s Revolution
of 1956 and the Blood in the Water match. Taking place in Bu-
dapest and at the Melbourne Olympic Games in October and
November of that year, the film takes viewers into the passion
and sadness of one of the most dramatic popular revolts of the
twentieth century. In the same year Soviet tanks were violently
suppressing the Revolution within Hungary, the Hungarian water
polo team was winning over the Soviets in the Olympic pool in
Melbourne, in what is sometimes described as the bloodiest wa-
ter polo match in history.
While telling the story of 1956 in part through fictional lead
characters, the film-makers simultaneously recreated many of
the key public events of the Revolution, including the huge de-
monstrations and the fighting in the streets of Budapest.
A filmmaker recalls his childhood, when he fell in love with
the movies at his village’s theater and formed a deep friendship
with the theater’s projectionist.
A boy who grew up in a native Sicilian Village returns home
as a famous director after receiving news about the death of an
old friend. Told in a flashback, Salvatore reminiscences about
his childhood and his relationship with Alfredo, a projectionist at
Cinema Paradiso. Under the fatherly influence of Alfredo, Salva-
tore fell in love with film making, with the duo spending many
hours discussing about films and Alfredo painstakingly teaching
Salvatore the skills that became a stepping stone for the young
boy into the world of film making. The film brings the audience
through the changes in cinema and the dying trade of traditio-
nal film making, editing and screening. It also explores a young
boy’s dream of leaving his little town to foray into the world out-
side.

Trailer
The last days of Adolf Hitler in his Berlin bunker at the end of
World War Two, has been discussed many times in books and in
documentaries. This movie is the first serious attempt by a Ger-
man director to tackle this most sensitive aspect of his country’s
history in a dramatized account.
‚Downfall’ is a study of life in the bunker and the surrounding
streets as the Russians are closing in. It is not so much about the
details of the end of the war, though that of course is covered;
rather, this is a story about desperate people in very desperate
circumstances, and how they each find their own solution to the
question of what to do when defeat becomes inevitable.

U.S. President Merkin Muffley is on the hot line to Moscow with
some rather embarrassing news for the Soviet premier: „Hello, Di-
mitri....I’m fine....Now then, you know how we’ve always talked
about the possibility of something going wrong with the bomb....
The bomb, Dimitri. The hydrogen bomb....Well, now, what hap-
pened is that, uh, one of our base commanders...he went a little
funny in the head....and he went and did a silly thing....He orde-
red his planes to attack your country.” A comedy about an ac-
cidental nuclear attack? One that ends with total annihilation,
thermonuclear apocalypse? Preposterous! Stanley Kubrick tho-
ught otherwise. In the end his thinking prevailed. The mad saga
revolves around a psychotic Strategic Air Command officer,
Gen. Jack D. Ripper, who lets loose his B-52 bomber squadron on
the Soviet Union. Ripper takes this unilateral action because of
his paranoid belief that Communists are sapping and contami-
nating „all our precious bodily fluids” as part of their plan to take
over the world. Unbeknownst to Ripper, his attack will trigger the
Russian’s ultimate weapon, the Doomsday Machine, a diaboli-
cal retaliatory device set to blow up the planet.

The Baader Meinhof Complex depicts the early years of the
West German terrorist group, the Red Army Faction (RAF). The
group was founded in the German student movement of the
late 1960s. The name of the film comes from two of the foun-
ding members, Andreas Baader (Bleibtreu) and Ulrike Meinhof
(Gedeck). The aim of such radical politics was to create a more
human society, through inhuman approaches like bombing and
murders. Of course, they have to face the German police, led
by Chief Horst Herold (Ganz).
Following closely to Stefan Aust’s non-fiction book of the
same title, the time-span of the film starts from the founding in
1967/8 to the German Autumn in 1977, but the long span does
not stop the film containing all the events in a documentary fa-
shion.
The film benefits hugely from the terrific acting talents of
both Bleibtreu and Gedeck, stars of the famous German films
Run Lola Run and The Lives of Others respectively. The prota-
gonists are terrorists, putting the audience on the other side of
the story which makes the film so fascinating, breathtaking and
provocative to watch. The film is demonstrative and the script is
cracking

Interrogation (Polish: Przesłuchanie) is a 1982 Polish film abo-
ut false imprisonment under the Stalinist pro-Soviet Polish regime
in the early 1950s. An ordinary, apolitical woman refuses to co-
operate with the abusive system and its officials, who are trying
to force her to incriminate a former incidental lover, now an ac-
cused political prisoner. It was directed by Ryszard Bugajski. Due
to its anti-communist themes, the Polish communist government
banned the film from public viewing for over seven years, until
the 1989 dissolution of the Eastern Bloc allowed it to see the light
of day.

In the Name of the Father is a 1993 Irish-British-American bio-
graphical courtroom drama film co-written and directed by Jim
Sheridan. It is based on the true life story of the Guildford Four,
four people falsely convicted of the 1974 IRA’s Guildford pub
bombings, which killed four off-duty British soldiers and a civilian.
[2] The screenplay was adapted by Terry George and Jim Sheri-
dan from the autobiography Proved Innocent: The Story of Gerry
Conlon of the Guildford Four by Gerry Conlon.
A small time thief from Belfast, Gerry Conlon, is falsely im-
plicated in the IRA bombing of a pub that kills several people
while he is in London. Bullied by the British police, he and four of
his friends are coerced into confessing their guilt. Gerry’s father
and other relatives in London are also implicated in the crime.
He spends 15 years in prison with his father trying to prove his in-
nocence with the help of a British attorney, Gareth Peirce. Based
on a true story.

Judge Dan Haywood (Spencer Tracy) arrives in Nuremberg
in 1948 to preside over the trial of four Nazi judges, each charged
with having abused the court system to help cleanse Germany
of the politically and socially undesirable, allegedly guilty of war
crimes. The opening statement of the prosecuting attorney (Ri-
chard Widmark) is a vicious one, depicting the defendants as
having been willing, evil, accomplices in Nazi atrocities, but Jud-
ge Haywood wonders if it is really that simple.
Confounded at how one defendant, a renowned German
champion of justice named Ernst Janning (Burt Lancaster), ap-
pears to have played the greatest role in molding Germany’s
Ministry of Justice into a destructive instrument of Nazism, Judge
Haywood resolves to gain some perspective on the period in
which the German legal system strayed from a course of entirely
objective justice.

This film is an inspiring story of courage and heroism as the
K-19 officers and crew display their sacrificial commitment to
duty as Russian Navy men. It is also a story of the political coura-
ge required to avoid warfare. Captain Polenin shows a deep
concern for the morale and safety of the crew, but his stern
replacement, Captain Vostrikov, eventually displays his own
commitment to their well-being. Crew members experience a
number of injuries, including severe radiation burns. Some pretty
realistic scenes of injuries and burned skin on radiation victims
are graphic and gruesome. But the most amazing phenomenon
in this film is the complete lack of foul language. Only one slightly
suggestive comment is made by a crew member. However, in a
humorous incident, the Russian crew “moons” an American heli-
copter crew. With a warning about the graphic injuries and bare
posterior scene, “K-19: The Widowmaker” is a very acceptable
and fascinating film for teenagers and adults.

athletes are taken hostage and murdered by a Palestinian ter-

The grim futility of the war between Bosnia and Serbia is re-
duced to its essence as two enemy soldiers are forced to share
a wary trust for one another in this drama. A group of Bosnian
soldiers are advancing upon Serbian territory during a misty ni-
ght when the fog lifts at daybreak, making them plainly visible
to their enemy. Serb forces open fire upon them, and soon only
Chiki (Brancko Djuric) is still alive, after diving into a trench in no
man’s land. Two Serbian soldiers scouting the area set up a land
mine using the body of a Bosnian soldier as „bait;” if moved, the
mine will jump into the air and explode. Chiki watches as the sol-
diers set the trap, and furious at the disrespect to his fallen com-
rades, he kills one of the Serbs, and takes the other, Nino (Rene
Bitorajac), hostage. With both soldiers alone and equally armed,
they find themselves at a stalemate, and begin trying to attract
help from either side. Eventually, the two men are found by a
squadron of French soldiers attached to a U.N. peacekeeping
unit; now held by supposedly neutral forces, Chiki and Nino are
with the French troops when it’s discovered that the dead Bo-
snian soldier isn’t dead after all, though no one is sure how to
disarm the mine without killing him in the process. No Man’s Land

novic.

„Portrait of Wally”,Egon Schiele’s tender picture of his mi-
stress, Walburga (Wally) Neuzil, is the pride of the Leopold Mu-
seum in Vienna. But for 13 years the painting was locked up in
New York, caught in a legal battle between the Austrian mu-
seum and the Jewish family from whom the Nazis seized the pa-
inting in 1939.
The documentary PORTRAIT OF WALLY, traces the history of
this iconic image from Schiele’s gesture of affection toward his
young lover, to the theft of the painting from Lea Bondi, a Jewish
art dealer fleeing Vienna for her life, to the post-war confusion
and subterfuge that evoke THE THIRD MAN, to the surprise resur-
facing of „Wally” on loan to the Museum of Modern Art in Man-
hattan in 1997.
The “Wally” case brought the story of Nazi art loot into the
open, eventually forcing museums in Europe and the U.S. to se-
arch their own collections for suspect objects. Many museums
ended up returning art to Jewish families who had abandoned
hope until “Wally” showed that institutions could be held acco-
untable for holding property stolen during the Holocaust. The
case was resolved in dramatic fashion in the summer of 2010,
but only after the history of Schiele’s extraordinary painting was
unearthed to revisit the crimes of the Holocaust and to witness
the reluctance of major institutions in Europe and New York to
send the “last prisoners of war” back to their families.

Michele Placido’s film “Romanzo Criminale” begins with a
group of boys stealing a car and going on a joyride that leaves
one of them dead and the rest in prison. They begin a life of cri-
me, determined to conquer the Roman underworld and, for a
while at least, they succeed.
The story, which is based on a novel by Giancarlo de Ca-
taldo, takes its characters through the turbulent 1970’s and into
the eighties, and as the boys seek to increase their power - and
through that, their independence - they only become more en-
tangled with powers which will always be greater than them-
selves; the mafia, corrupt politicians. They are also pursued over
the years by Commissioner Scialoja, played by the popular Ita-
lian actor Stefano Accorsi.
The story is fairly complex, and involves the characters with
many real-life historical events such as the kidnapping and mur-
der of Aldo Moro (which also formed the basis for “Buongiorno
Notte”) and the Bologna massacre of 1980, when a bomb left
in a crowded train station left 85 people dead. The book was
a long one, at over 600 pages, and the story barely fits into the
film’s 154 minute running time. As a result some events are sped
through perhaps a little too quickly, and Romanzo Criminale co-
uld easily have been a much longer film, or perhaps even a te-
levision series. Timing aside, it’s well directed by Placido and fe-
atures some wonderful use of Roman scenery, including some
dramatic death scenes that take place on the Spanish Steps
and in the piazza in front of Santa Maria in Trastevere.
Schindler’s List is Steven Spielberg’s award-winning film
which illustrates the profoundly nightmarish Holocaust. It re-cre-
ates a dark, frightening period during World War II, when Na-
zi-occupied Krakow first dispossessed Jews of their businesses
and homes, then placed in ghettos and forced labor camps in
Plaszow, and finally resettled in concentration camps for execu-
tion. Oskar Schindler, a German businessman and an opportu-
nist member of the Nazi party acquires a factory for the produc-
tion of mess kits and cooking paraphernalia. Not knowing much
about how to properly run such an enterprise, he gains a con-
tact, Itzhak Stern, who has links with the underground Jewish bu-
siness community in the ghetto. They loan him the money for the
factory in return for a small share of products produced for trade
in the black market. Schindler witnesses the horrifying visions of
the Holocaust and the toll it takes on the Jewish people. Schin-
dler’s motivations switch from profit to human sympathy and by
lavishly bribing the SS officials, he is able to save over 1,100 Jews
from death in the gas chambers.

A tale based on the life of Wilhelm Furtwangler, the contro-
versial conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic whose tenure coin-
cided with the controversial Nazi era. One of the most spectacu-
lar and renowned conductors of the 30s, Furtwangler’s reputation
rivaled that of Toscanini’s. After the war, he was investigated as
part of the Allies’ de-Nazification programme. In the bombed-o-
ut Berlin of the immediate post-war period, the Allies slowly bring
law and order--and justice--to bear on an occupied Germany.
An American major is given the Furtwangler file, and is told to
find everything he can and to prosecute the man ruthlessly. To-
ugh and hard-nosed, Major Steve Arnold sets out to investigate a
world of which he knows nothing. Orchestra members vouch for
Furtwangler’s morality--he did what he could to protect Jewish
players from his orchestra. To the Germans, deeply respectful of
their musical heritage, Furtwangler was a demigod; to Major Ar-
nold, he is just a lying, weak-willed Nazi.

This political drama takes us back in time, to a different po-
litical period in a small mountainous Greek village of 1945. Shor-
tly after Varkiza’s Agreement, armed parastatals led by Micha
cause terror, murders and other horrible acts against the leftists
who have not declared obedience and allegiance.
The movie’s scenes and the whole story is cruel yet realistic.
The armed parastatals invade homes- raping, beating and thre-
atening even the children. They demand money in order not to
escalate the violence, forcing people to sell their small fortunes,
their animals and their homes. Their action supports the Gendar-
merie station, which entrusts them with crimes that others are
usually not willing to commit.
This story depicts the differences between extreme leftists
and right- wing fascism that too often results in violence. It is a
close look into the civil war, focused primarily on the actions of
the fascists. It is a story that will make us wonder about the forms
and effects of the unfortunate rise of fascism.
The film is demonstrative and the script is
cracking

1954. France, after the independence of the nations com-
prising Indochina, turns its attention to incidents in French Alge-
ria, which they have ruled for approximately one hundred thirty
years. The National Liberation Front (FLN) is leading the resistan-
ce in Algeria against their colonial rulers, the FLN who the French
authorities believe, or want to believe, comprise only a small mi-
nority of the Muslim Algerian population in wanting Algerian in-
dependence. Specific incidents in this battle in Algiers between
1954 and the time of independence in 1962 are presented. The
FLN began their campaign in shooting military police in the Cas-
bah, the predominantly Muslim quarter of the city, as they were
able to blend back into the scene with the support of the po-
pulace. These initial one by one attacks escalated on both si-
des to mass killings, where collateral damage was seen as being
acceptable. Both sides also worked toward the United Nations
discussion on the issue, each wanting global support for their
cause. The events largely focus on two people, one on each
side. The first is Ali La Pointe, a lifelong petty criminal and illiterate
who the FLN recruited after being politicized while in prison. The
second is French paratrooper Colonel Mathieu, a lead French
strategist whose main goal is to dismantle the FLN activities by
„cutting off the head of the tapeworm”.

The Lives of Others (German: Das Leben der Anderen) is a
2006 German drama film, marking the feature film debut of film-
maker Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, about the monitoring
of East Berlin residents by agents of the Stasi, the GDR’s secret
police. It stars Ulrich Mühe (who died within a year of the film’s
release) as Stasi Captain Gerd Wiesler, Ulrich Tukur as his superior
Anton Grubitz, Sebastian Koch as the playwright Georg Drey-
man, and Martina Gedeck as Dreyman’s lover, a prominent ac-
tress named Christa-Maria Sieland.
Gerd Wiesler is an officer with the Stasi, the East German se-
cret police. The film begins in 1984 when Wiesler attends a play
written by Georg Dreyman, who is considered by many to be the
ultimate example of the loyal citizen. Wiesler has a gut feeling
that Dreyman can’t be as ideal as he seems and believes surve-
illance is called for. The Minister of Culture agrees but only later
does Wiesler learn that the Minister sees Dreyman as a rival and
lusts after his partner Christa-Maria. The more time he spends li-
stening in on them, the more he comes to care about them.
The once rigid Stasi officer begins to intervene in their lives, in
a positive way, protecting them whenever possible. Eventually,
Wiesler activities catch up to him and while there is no proof of
wrongdoing, he finds himself in menial jobs - until the unbelieva-
ble happens.

The Reader is a 2008 German-American romantic drama
film based on the 1995 German novel of the same name by Ber-
nhard Schlink. The film was written by David Hare and directed
by Stephen Daldry. Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet star along
with the young actor David Kross. It was the last film for produ-
cers Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack, both of whom had
died before it was released. Production began in Germany in
September 2007, and the film opened in limited release on De-
cember 10, 2008.
It tells the story of Michael Berg, a German lawyer who as a
mid-teenager in 1958 had an affair with an older woman, Hanna
Schmitz, who then disappeared only to resurface years later as
one of the defendants in a war crimes trial stemming from her
actions as a guard at a Nazi concentration camp. Michael reali-
zes that Hanna is keeping a personal secret she believes is worse
than her Nazi past – a secret which, if revealed, could help her
at the trial.

Trailer

Based on the novel by John Le Carre, The Spy Who Came in
from the Cold stars Richard Burton as a dispirited, end-of-tether
British secret agent. He comes in from „the cold” (meaning he is
pulled out of field operations) to act as a undercover man behi-
nd the Iron Curtain. To make his staged defection seem genuine,
Burton goes on an alcoholic toot and is imprisoned and public-
ly humiliated. Once he has been accepted into East German
espionage circles, Burton discovers that what he thought was his
mission was a mere subterfuge--and that he’s been set up as a
pawn for an entirely different operation. Though Ireland and En-
gland „stand in” for East Berlin, Spy Who Came In From the Cold
has the air of authenticity throughout, thanks in great part to the
bleak black and white photography by Oswald Morris. The film
was condemned as incomprehensible by those filmgoers accu-
stomed to the simplistic melodramatics of James Bond; seen to-
day, the double-crosses and double-double crosses seem all too
clear and credible.
A look at the relationship between the famous physicist Ste-
phen Hawking and his wife.
The Theory of Everything is the story of the most brilliant and
celebrated physicist of our time, Stephen Hawking, and Jane
Wilde the arts student he fell in love with whilst studying at Cam-
bridge in the 1960s. Little was expected from Stephen Hawking,
a bright but shiftless student of cosmology, given just two years to
live following the diagnosis of a fatal illness at 21 years of age. He
became galvanized, however, by the love of fellow Cambridge
student, Jane Wilde, and he went on to be called the successor
to Einstein, as well as a husband and father to their three child-
ren. Over the course of their marriage as Stephen’s body collap-
sed and his academic renown soared, fault lines were exposed
that tested the lineaments of their relationship and dramatically
altered the course of both of their lives.

work. Each suitcase contains an object „to represent the world”,
which advances or comments upon the story in some way, al-

real.

Based on a true story. In the 70’s, during the last stages of
Franco’s dictatorship, Txema, a basque construction worker, is
arrested because of his connection to some terrorists who have
just committed a murder. The secret service see in him an ide-

too interested, but his financial problems (probably caused by
the secret service itself) finally force him to take their money and
accept the mission. He adopts the undercover name of „Lobo”
(Wolf) and becomes an active member of the band, making all
the right connections until he reaches the top and acquires the
trust of its leaders. In the process, he discovers that the group has
deep internal divisions between those who want to abandon
the armed fight and become just a political party, and those
who want to keep the terrorist activity until they can proclaim

production based loosely on the real-life story of the dissident
Polish priest Jerzy Popieluszko. In the early 1980s, as the demo-

government enlists a police official, Stefan (Ed Harris), to stop the
priest. Stefan, a devoted party follower, finds that the only way
he can silence Father Alek is to have him killed. Along the way,

convince those still hidden underground that WWII is still being

In a mid-sized metropolis (population 500,000) in a right-

the opposition party in the government, is planning on holding
an anti-military, nuclear disarmament rally. The organization’s
charismatic leader - the deputy - is scheduled to arrive in the
town from the capital the day of the rally. Beyond the problems
arranging the rally due to the probable incitement of violence
at such a rally, the organization learns of an unconfirmed report
that there will be an attempt on the deputy’s life. The rally does
happen, after which a three-wheeled kamikaze runs over the
deputy, who eventually passes away from his injuries. The official
report is that the incident was a drunken accident. In reality, the
deputy’s death was murder orchestrated by the secret police,
the general for who likens the pacifist organization to mildew kil-

finding out the truth, and as such has to wade through the politi-

into the mix is a photojournalist who too is looking for the truth, as
it, he believes, will make a great front page story.

In the early twentieth century, Zurich-based Carl Jung is a follower in the new theories of psychoanalysis of Vienna-based Sigmund Freud, who states that all psychological problems are rooted in sex. Jung uses those theories for the first time as part of his treatment of Sabina Spielrein, a young Russian woman bro- ught to his care. She is obviously troubled despite her assertions that she is not crazy. Jung is able to uncover the reasons for Sa- bina’s psychological problems, she who is an aspiring physician herself. In this latter role, Jung employs her to work in his own research, which often includes him and his wife Emma as test subjects. Jung is eventually able to meet Freud himself, they, ba- sed on their enthusiasm, who develop a friendship driven by the- ir lengthy philosophical discussions on psychoanalysis. Actions by Jung based on his discussions with another patient, a fellow psychoanalyst named Otto Gross, lead to fundamental chan- ges in Jung’s relationships with Freud, Sabina and Emma. Those relationships are also affected by Freud’s unbending views of psychoanalysis and its use, by Sabina’s growing self-awareness of what drives her emotionally, regardless of their negative root causes, and by Emma’s feelings of guilt over not being able to produce a male heir for her husband. Three astronauts, Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert were sup- posed to go to the moon, a destination that people seemingly were no longer interested in. In fact, their broadcasts from space didn’t even make the news. And then the words came: „Ho- uston...we’ve got a problem.” On Earth, the astronauts’ families wait in horror as the reports continue to flow in. Bad reports. Gene Kranz, the flight director in Houston, works around the clock, hoping, just hoping, that so- mething will actually go right. And Ken Mattingly, who, two days before the launch, was stripped of his chance to go into space due to the measles, attempts to figure out a way to get his friends back home. And suddenly, the news media becomes attentive as the whole world watches, praying for the safe return of three brave astronauts. 205, 000 miles from home, the three astronauts watch as their crippled craft jettisons oxygen into space and carbon dioxi- de levels rise to brain damaging levels. They watch as the tem- perature drops past freezing, icing the windows and numbing their bodies. • 10. Both sides agree that on Jan. 30, 1972, a civil rights march in Derry, Northern Ireland, ended with a confrontation between some of the marchers and British army paratroopers. At the end of the day, 13 marchers were dead and 14 in the hospital, one of whom later died. No British soldiers were killed. An official inquiry declared that the soldiers had returned the fire of armed mar- chers. Some of the soldiers involved were later decorated by the crown. Beyond this agreement, there is a disagreement so deep and bitter that 30 years later „Bloody Sunday” is still an open wound in the long, contested history of the British in Northern Ireland. A new inquiry into the events of the day was opened in 1998 and still continues today. Paul Greengrass’ film „Bloody Sunday,” which shared the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival this year, is made in the form of a documentary. It covers about 24 hours, starting on Saturday evening, and its central character is Ivan Cooper (James Nesbitt), a civil rights leader in Derry. He was a Protestant MP from the nationalist Social Democratic Labour Par- ty. Most of the 10,000 marchers on that Sunday would be Catho- lic; that a Protestant led them, and stood beside such firebrands as Bernadette Devlin, indicates the division in the north between those who stood in solidarity with their co-religionists, and those of all faiths who simply wanted the British out of Northern Ireland. • 36. This film is an inspiring story of courage and heroism as the K-19 officers and crew display their sacrificial commitment to duty as Russian Navy men. It is also a story of the political coura- ge required to avoid warfare. Captain Polenin shows a deep concern for the morale and safety of the crew, but his stern replacement, Captain Vostrikov, eventually displays his own commitment to their well-being. Crew members experience a number of injuries, including severe radiation burns. Some pretty realistic scenes of injuries and burned skin on radiation victims are graphic and gruesome. But the most amazing phenomenon in this film is the complete lack of foul language. Only one slightly suggestive comment is made by a crew member. However, in a humorous incident, the Russian crew “moons” an American heli- copter crew. Chiki watches as the sol- diers set the trap, and furious at the disrespect to his fallen com- rades, he kills one of the Serbs, and takes the other, Nino (Rene Bitorajac), hostage. With both soldiers alone and equally armed, they find themselves at a stalemate, and begin trying to attract help from either side. Eventually, the two men are found by a squadron of French soldiers attached to a U.N. peacekeeping unit; now held by supposedly neutral forces, Chiki and Nino are with the French troops when it’s discovered that the dead Bo- snian soldier isn’t dead after all, though no one is sure how to disarm the mine without killing him in the process. • 45. PORTRAIT OF WALLY (2012) Director: Andrew Shea Writers: David D’Arcy, Andrew Shea Country: U.S.A, Austria Genres: Documentary | History Trailer „Portrait of Wally”,Egon Schiele’s tender picture of his mi- stress, Walburga (Wally) Neuzil, is the pride of the Leopold Mu- seum in Vienna. But for 13 years the painting was locked up in New York, caught in a legal battle between the Austrian mu- seum and the Jewish family from whom the Nazis seized the pa- inting in 1939. The documentary PORTRAIT OF WALLY, traces the history of this iconic image from Schiele’s gesture of affection toward his young lover, to the theft of the painting from Lea Bondi, a Jewish art dealer fleeing Vienna for her life, to the post-war confusion and subterfuge that evoke THE THIRD MAN, to the surprise resur- facing of „Wally” on loan to the Museum of Modern Art in Man- hattan in 1997. The “Wally” case brought the story of Nazi art loot into the open, eventually forcing museums in Europe and the U.S. to se- arch their own collections for suspect objects. Many museums ended up returning art to Jewish families who had abandoned hope until “Wally” showed that institutions could be held acco- untable for holding property stolen during the Holocaust. The case was resolved in dramatic fashion in the summer of 2010, but only after the history of Schiele’s extraordinary painting was unearthed to revisit the crimes of the Holocaust and to witness the reluctance of major institutions in Europe and New York to send the “last prisoners of war” back to their families.
  • 46. ROMANZO CRIMINALE (2011) Director: Michele Placido Writers: Giancarlo De Cataldo, Stefano Rulli Stars: Kim Rossi Stuart, Anna Mouglalis, Pierfrancesco Favino Country: Italy | France | UK Genres: Crime | Drama Trailer Michele Placido’s film “Romanzo Criminale” begins with a group of boys stealing a car and going on a joyride that leaves one of them dead and the rest in prison. They begin a life of cri- me, determined to conquer the Roman underworld and, for a while at least, they succeed. The story, which is based on a novel by Giancarlo de Ca- taldo, takes its characters through the turbulent 1970’s and into the eighties, and as the boys seek to increase their power - and through that, their independence - they only become more en- tangled with powers which will always be greater than them- selves; the mafia, corrupt politicians. They are also pursued over the years by Commissioner Scialoja, played by the popular Ita- lian actor Stefano Accorsi. The story is fairly complex, and involves the characters with many real-life historical events such as the kidnapping and mur- der of Aldo Moro (which also formed the basis for “Buongiorno Notte”) and the Bologna massacre of 1980, when a bomb left in a crowded train station left 85 people dead. The book was a long one, at over 600 pages, and the story barely fits into the film’s 154 minute running time. As a result some events are sped through perhaps a little too quickly, and Romanzo Criminale co- uld easily have been a much longer film, or perhaps even a te- levision series. Timing aside, it’s well directed by Placido and fe- atures some wonderful use of Roman scenery, including some dramatic death scenes that take place on the Spanish Steps and in the piazza in front of Santa Maria in Trastevere.
  • 47. Schindler’s List is Steven Spielberg’s award-winning film which illustrates the profoundly nightmarish Holocaust. It re-cre- ates a dark, frightening period during World War II, when Na- zi-occupied Krakow first dispossessed Jews of their businesses and homes, then placed in ghettos and forced labor camps in Plaszow, and finally resettled in concentration camps for execu- tion. Oskar Schindler, a German businessman and an opportu- nist member of the Nazi party acquires a factory for the produc- tion of mess kits and cooking paraphernalia. Not knowing much about how to properly run such an enterprise, he gains a con- tact, Itzhak Stern, who has links with the underground Jewish bu- siness community in the ghetto. They loan him the money for the factory in return for a small share of products produced for trade in the black market. Schindler witnesses the horrifying visions of the Holocaust and the toll it takes on the Jewish people. Schin- dler’s motivations switch from profit to human sympathy and by lavishly bribing the SS officials, he is able to save over 1,100 Jews from death in the gas chambers. • 48. A tale based on the life of Wilhelm Furtwangler, the contro- versial conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic whose tenure coin- cided with the controversial Nazi era. One of the most spectacu- lar and renowned conductors of the 30s, Furtwangler’s reputation rivaled that of Toscanini’s. After the war, he was investigated as part of the Allies’ de-Nazification programme. In the bombed-o- ut Berlin of the immediate post-war period, the Allies slowly bring law and order--and justice--to bear on an occupied Germany. An American major is given the Furtwangler file, and is told to find everything he can and to prosecute the man ruthlessly. To- ugh and hard-nosed, Major Steve Arnold sets out to investigate a world of which he knows nothing. Orchestra members vouch for Furtwangler’s morality--he did what he could to protect Jewish players from his orchestra. To the Germans, deeply respectful of their musical heritage, Furtwangler was a demigod; to Major Ar- nold, he is just a lying, weak-willed Nazi. TIED RED THREAD (2011) Demeni kokkini klosti Director: Kostas Haralambous Writer: Kostas Haralambous Stars: Thanos Samaras, Tasos Nousias, Efi Gousi Country: Greece Genres: Drama | War Trailer This political drama takes us back in time, to a different po- litical period in a small mountainous Greek village of 1945. Shor- tly after Varkiza’s Agreement, armed parastatals led by Micha cause terror, murders and other horrible acts against the leftists who have not declared obedience and allegiance. The movie’s scenes and the whole story is cruel yet realistic. The armed parastatals invade homes- raping, beating and thre- atening even the children. They demand money in order not to escalate the violence, forcing people to sell their small fortunes, their animals and their homes. Their action supports the Gendar- merie station, which entrusts them with crimes that others are usually not willing to commit. This story depicts the differences between extreme leftists and right- wing fascism that too often results in violence. It is a close look into the civil war, focused primarily on the actions of the fascists. It is a story that will make us wonder about the forms and effects of the unfortunate rise of fascism.
  • 52. The Baader Meinhof Complex depicts the early years of the West German terrorist group, the Red Army Faction (RAF). The group was founded in the German student movement of the late 1960s. The name of the film comes from two of the foun- ding members, Andreas Baader (Bleibtreu) and Ulrike Meinhof (Gedeck). The aim of such radical politics was to create a more human society, through inhuman approaches like bombing and murders. Of course, they have to face the German police, led by Chief Horst Herold (Ganz). Following closely to Stefan Aust’s non-fiction book of the same title, the time-span of the film starts from the founding in 1967/8 to the German Autumn in 1977, but the long span does not stop the film containing all the events in a documentary fa- shion. The film benefits hugely from the terrific acting talents of both Bleibtreu and Gedeck, stars of the famous German films Run Lola Run and The Lives of Others respectively. The prota- gonists are terrorists, putting the audience on the other side of the story which makes the film so fascinating, breathtaking and provocative to watch. These initial one by one attacks escalated on both si- des to mass killings, where collateral damage was seen as being acceptable. Both sides also worked toward the United Nations discussion on the issue, each wanting global support for their cause. The events largely focus on two people, one on each side. THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD (1965) Director: Martin Ritt Writers: John le Carré, Paul Dehn Stars: Richard Burton, Oskar Werner, Claire Bloom Country: UK Genres: Drama | Thriller Trailer Based on the novel by John Le Carre, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold stars Richard Burton as a dispirited, end-of-tether British secret agent. He comes in from „the cold” (meaning he is pulled out of field operations) to act as a undercover man behi- nd the Iron Curtain. To make his staged defection seem genuine, Burton goes on an alcoholic toot and is imprisoned and public- ly humiliated. Once he has been accepted into East German espionage circles, Burton discovers that what he thought was his mission was a mere subterfuge--and that he’s been set up as a pawn for an entirely different operation. Though Ireland and En- gland „stand in” for East Berlin, Spy Who Came In From the Cold has the air of authenticity throughout, thanks in great part to the bleak black and white photography by Oswald Morris. The film was condemned as incomprehensible by those filmgoers accu- stomed to the simplistic melodramatics of James Bond; seen to- day, the double-crosses and double-double crosses seem all too clear and credible.
