GAS LAWS
LEOFF REYES LESSON
E
BOYLE’S LAW
Robert Boyle
E
𝑃1 𝑉 1= 𝑃2 𝑉 2
relationship between
pressure and volume is
inversely proportional
CHARLES’ LAW
Jacques Charles
E
relationship between
temperature and volume is
directly proportional
𝑉 1 𝑇 2=𝑉 2 𝑇1
EXAMPLE
Calculate the temperature (in Kelvin) when a 2.00
L soda at 3.0 °C goes to STP (standard pressure
and temperature).
ACTIVITY
1. Calculate the decrease in temperature (in
Kelvin) when a 2.00 L at 21.0 °C returns to STP.
1 Whole Sheet
ACTIVITY
2. A fixed quantity of gas at 23.0 C has a volume
of 10.3 L. Calculate the volume the gas will
occupy if the temperature is increased to 145 C
while the pressure is held constant.
1 Whole Sheet
ACTIVITY
3. A sample of gas occupies a volume of 7.50 L at
28.0 C. At what temperature is the volume of the
gas 4.00 L if the pressure is kept constant.
1 Whole Sheet
ACTIVITY
4. A gas occupies a volume of 100.0 mL at 27.0
C. At what temperature would the volume be 50.0
mL?
1 Whole Sheet
GAY-LUSSAC’S LAW
Joseph-Louis Gay-Lussac
E
relationship between
temperature and pressure
is directly proportional
𝑃1 𝑇2= 𝑃2 𝑇 1
EXAMPLE
A sample of gas has a pressure of 100.0 torr and
27.0C. Calculate the pressure if the temperature is
changed to 127C while the volume remains
constant.
ACTIVITY
1. A gas initially at STP is changed to 248 K.
Calculate the final pressure of the gas.
ACTIVITY
2. A gas occupies a volume of 50.0 mL at 27C
and 630 mmHg. At what temperature, in C, would
the pressure be 101.3 kPa if the volume remains
constant?
ACTIVITY
3. A sample of gas has a pressure of 700. mmHg
and 30.0 C. At what temperature would the
pressure be 600 mmHg if the volume remains
constant?
ACTIVITY
3. A sample of gas is initially at STP. What would
the pressure be if the temperature were increased
to 819 C?
AVOGADRO’S LAW
Amedeo Avogadro
E
relationship between
volume and number of
moles is directly
proportional
𝑉 1 𝑛2=𝑉 2 𝑛1
V – volume
n – number of moles
EXAMPLE
5.00 L of gas is known to contain 0.965 mol. If the
amount of gas is increased to 1.80 mol, what new
volume will result (at an unchanged temperature
and pressure)?
EXAMPLE
A cylinder with a movable piston contains 2.00 g
of helium, He, at room temperature. More helium
was added to the cylinder and the volume was
adjusted so that the gas pressure remained the
same. How many grams of helium were added to
the cylinder if the volume was changed from 2.00
L to 2.70 L?
Gas Laws.-grade 10 science- 4th quarterpptx
ACTIVITY
1. If 5.00 g of O2 gas has a volume of 7.20 L at a
certain temperature and pressure, what volume
does 15.0 g of O2 have the same conditions?
1 whole
ACTIVITY
2. If 4.0 moles of Helium gas occupies a volume
of 22.4 L at 0ºC and a pressure of 1.0 atm, what
volume does 3.0 moles of He occupy under the
same conditions?
1 whole
ACTIVITY
3. A 25.5 L balloon holding 3.5 grams of Carbon
dioxide leaks. If we are able to determine that 1.9
grams of Carbon dioxide escaped before the
container could be sealed. What is the new
volume of the container?
1 whole

Editor's Notes

  • #2: Squeezing the syringe builds pressure, lessens volume.
  • #3: Temperature keeps the balloon inflated.
  • #9: Tires bursting are caused by increasing temperature eventually increasing pressure.
  • #15: Tires bursting are caused by increasing temperature eventually increasing pressure.
