CHICHEN ITZA
It is the most visited archeological site in Mexico.
It is the biggest and best restored monument.
The only source of water in the arid region around the site is
from the cenotes. Two big cenotes on the site made it a suitable
place for the city and gave it its name, from chi (“mouths”), chen
(“wells”), and Itza, the name of the Maya tribe that settled there.

• Chichen was founded about the 6th century CE, presumably
by Maya peoples of the Yucatán Peninsula.
• A must here is the massive Ell Castillo also known as the
pyramid of Kukulcan it rises 79 feet above main plaza.
• El Castillo has four sides, each with 91 stairs and facing a
cardinal direction; including the step on the top platform,
these combine for a total of 365 steps—the number of days in
the solar year.

Another attraction here is Caracol it is almost 1000 years old
observatory that stands testament to just how advanced the
mayan people were.
The ball court is 545 feet long and 223 feet wide, the largest such
court in the Americas.
Other structures include the High Priest’s Grave and the
Colonnade (Thousand Columns) and the adjoining Temple of the
Warriors.

Excavation began in the 19th century, and the site became one
of Mexico’s prime archaeological zones.
It is one of the 7 wonders of the world and in 1988 it was
included in UNESCO world heritage site.

• It is a 56,259 hectares biosphere lies within rugged forested
mountains about 100 km northwest of Mexico City.
• Every autumn, millions or billions of butterflies from wide
areas of North America return to the site and cluster on small
areas of the forest reserve, coloring its trees orange and
literally bending their branches under their collective weight.

• In the spring, these butterflies begin an 8 month migration
that takes them all the way to Eastern Canada and back,
during which time four successive generations are born and
die.
• Witnessing this unique phenomenon is an exceptional
experience of nature. It was included in UNESCO world
heritage site in 2008.

SIAN KA'AN
• Sian Ka'an means 'Origin of the Sky'.
• Located on the east coast of the Yucatan peninsula, this
biosphere reserve contains tropical forests, mangroves and
marshes, as well as a large marine section intersected by a
barrier reef.
• It provides a habitat for rich flora and a fauna comprising
more than 300 species of birds, as well as a large number of
the region's characteristic terrestrial vertebrates, which
cohabit in the diverse environment formed by its complex
hydrological system.

• The property boasts diverse tropical forests, palm savannah,
one of the most pristine wetlands in the region, lagoons,
extensive mangrove stands, as well as sandy beaches and
dunes.
• The 120,000 hectares of marine area protect a valuable part
of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and seagrass beds in the
shallow bays.

• The tropical forests are home to charismatic mammals such as
Jaguar, Puma, Ocelot and Central American Tapir.
• The property also provides habitat for a large number of
resident and migratory bird species.
• There is a great diversity of marine life, including the West
Indian Manatee, four species of nesting marine turtles and
hundreds of fish species.
• And it was included in UNESCO world heritage site in 1987.

XEL-HA PARK
• It is an aquatic theme park where guests can snorkel, relax
and enjoy the sparkling Caribbean waters in a safe, secluded
inlet.
• The adventure park is located just north of Tulum in Mexico’s
Riviera Maya.
• It is a commercial aquatic theme park and ecotourism
development site.
• The park is named after the site of Xelha, an archaeological
site of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization, part of which is
located within the lands leased to the park.

XEL-HA PARK
• It houses an iconic natural inlet that is home for several flora
and fauna species.
• Xel-Há means “where water is born” since several
underground rivers flow into the inlet at this wonder of
nature.
• Tourists can also enjoy snorkeling and swimming here. And
also the Scenic Lighthouse here you can enjoy the best view
of the Xel-Há and its surroundings.

TULUM ARCHAEOLOGICAL ZONE
• Tulum is one of the most important archaeological zones in
the state of Quintana Roo, since it is the only site that faces
the Caribbean Sea.
• In ancient times it had the name of Zama that means dawn,
its current name, Tulum, means "enclosure or wall".
• For the Mayans, this city was the main center of sea and land
commerce in the area.
• This Mayan city was built on a cliff from which you can see the
turquoise tones of the Caribbean Sea.

TULUM ARCHAEOLOGICAL ZONE
• It has more than 60 restored temples, El Castillo is the main
building of the archaeological zone of Tulum, which is the
most photographed site in the Riviera Maya, due to its
peculiar location on the cliff.
• The Mayan city is surrounded by walls, each one symbolizing
one of the elements: earth, water, air and fire.
• The reef in front of the coast forms the fourth wall and which
made Tulum practically inaccessible.

• It has several kilometers of beaches and many hidden
wonders, Playa Paraiso Tulum, one of the most visited
beaches in the area; you will find a beach called caleta Tankah
here large amounts of fresh underground water that passes
through cenotes flows into it.

TULUM ARCHAEOLOGICAL ZONE • Tulum is one of the most important archaeological zones in the state of Quintana Roo, since it is the only site that faces the Caribbean Sea. • In ancient times it had the name of Zama that means dawn, its current name, Tulum, means "enclosure or wall". • For the Mayans, this city was the main center of sea and land commerce in the area. • This Mayan city was built on a cliff from which you can see the turquoise tones of the Caribbean Sea. 07-05-2021 33 Geography and Tourism in Mexico
