 The prefix of geo textile,
geo, means “Earth” and
textile means “Fabric”.
 The geotextile is more
aptly geosynthetics
belong to the class of
Technical Textiles under
GEOTECH catagory.
 The first application of geo textile were woven industry
fabrics used in 1950.
 A waterfront structure was built in Florida in 1958.
 The first nonwoven geo textile was developed in 1968 by
the Rhone opulence company in FRANCE .
 In France thick needle-
punched polyester, which was
used in dam construction in
1970.
 Geogrids
 Geonets
 Geotextile
 Geomembranes
 Geosynthetic Clay Liners
 Geopipe
 Geocomposites
 A permeable geo textile comprised solely of textiles. Geo
textiles are used with foundation, soil, rock, or any other
geotechnical engineering-related material as an integral part
of human-made project, structure, or system.
 The vast majority of
geotextile are made
from polypropylene,
polyamides,
polyethylene or
polyester. Such as,
◦ Woven geotextile.
◦ Non-woven geotextile.
 Now a days Jute are
also applied as
geotextile.
Woven geotextiles:
• Woven monofilament.
• Woven multifilament.
• Woven slit-film
monofilament.
• Woven slit-film
multifilament.
 Woven geotextiles are made with synthetic polymers that
are woven together.
 Many roads and parking lots are built on top of a woven
geotextile.
 The fabric holds the earth in place, preventing shifting or
movement and creating a stable base for the construction
Needle punched
Heat bonded
 Non-woven geotextile, which have the texture of felt,
are often quicker and cheaper to create but also
have shorter lifespan and do nothing to help reinforce
or stabilize the soil.
 Jute Geotextile (JGT) is
made of bast fibers of
jute plant.
 Jute Geo Textile
◦ Woven
◦ Non-woven
 Geo Jute application
 Erosion control.
 Separation, filtration and
drainage in civil
engineering work.
 Woven geogrid.
 Agricultural uses.
 Separation.
 Stabilization.
 Filtration.
 Reinforcement.
 Protection.
 Drainage.
 Geotextile will prevent two soil
layers of different particle
sizes from mixing with each
other, as is illustrated the
image below.
 In this function, the geotextile
serves to separate two
dissimilar materials, eg, two
different soils, landfill material
and the native soil, stone
material, foundation soils
and various types of walls, or
one of many other similar
situations.
 During such an application,
geotextile is placed on wet,
compressible or soft material
that shows little natural
strength.
 Geotextiles are separators
allowing water moving into free
draining construction soils.
 Natural soil consolidation is
thus going to happen. Because
of this consolidation process,
natural soil gains strength. This
offers a very strong construction
foundation that can be utilized
in the future.

Geotextile will efficiently
collect superfluous water
from structures, such as
rainwater or surplus
water, from the soil and
discharge it.
 Drainage is normally
arranged so it happens
parallel to geotextile
plane.

Geotextile are an ideal
interface for reverse filtration
in the soil adjacent to the
geotextile.
 The complex needle-punched
structure of the geotextile
enables the retention of fine
particles without reducing the
permeability of the drain.
 Filtration best achieved in
needle-punched nonwoven
materials.

Heavy geotextile can be
used to reinforce earth
structures by means of
fill materials.
 Their high soil fabric
friction coefficient and
high tensile strength,
they are an ideal
reinforcement solution.

Geotextiles are an ideal
protection from erosion of
earth embankments by wave
action, currents or repeated
drawdown.
 A layer of geotextiles can be
placed so as to prevent
leaching of fine material.
 They can be used for rock
beaching or as mattress
structures. They can even
easily be placed under water.
 When impregnated with
an asphaltic emulsion,
geotextiles become
impermeable and can
then be used as moisture
barriers.
 The primary application
for this type of geotextile
is in pavement
rehabilitation.
Without GeotextilesWith Geotextiles
 The main cause of pavement
and road damage is
contamination of the
aggregate base and the
resulting loss of aggregate
strength.
 Continuous vehicle pressure
over time can cause sub grade
soils to migrate into the
aggregate base.
 This significantly reduces the
effective aggregate thickness,
destroying the road support
and reducing roadway
performance and life.
 1. VIRGIN POLYMER NONWOVEN POLYPROPYLENE
GEOTEXTILE:- Suitable for most applications dependent upon
grade selected. These are needle punched, virgin
polypropylene, nonwoven geotextiles.
 2. VIRGIN POLYMER NONWOVEN POLYESTER GEOTEXTILE :–
Suitable for most applications dependent upon grade
selected. The most common fabric construction type
marketed here in this Region.
 3. PET ENGINEERED WOVEN GEOTEXTILE: This geotextile is an
engineered woven geotextile that has exceptionally high
tensile strength characteristics at low levels of strain.
The annual growth rate of geo-textile is very high.
During the
period 2000-2005 the rate of growth was 4.6%
and during
2005-2010 the rate of growth was 5.3%
 Fluid transmission
 Roadways parking tots
 Loading & construction sites.
 Prevent drainage system.
 Filtration, protection,
separation function.
 For water way erosion control.
 Reduce soil piping &
embankment erosion.
 Prevention of weed growth.
 Moisture conservation for
horticulture.
 High in strength.
 UV resistance.
 Rot resistance.
 Resists biological
degradation.
 Chemically inert.
 Increases the life of road.
