Research Seminar for
Educational Sciences
Prof. Dr. Chang Zhu
Department of Educational Sciences
Research Seminar
Welcome to the course ‘Research
Seminar’
Learning strategies
• Two important learning strategies are
applied:
• Flipped classroom and blended learning
Flipped classroom
• Flipped classroom: you as learner study
and prepare the main learning content and
theories before the lecture;
• During the lectures, we focus on group
discussions, questions and answers,
presentations by students, as well as
learning by practising, which is applying
the knowledge into practices;
Blended learning
• Blended learning: we combine online and
face-to-face learning; for this course,
learning material is available on the e-
learning platform Pointcarre as well as on
an e-learning environment linked in
Pointcarre;
• the e-learning material includes
documents, powerpoints, reading list,
links, assignments, forums, etc.
Blended learning
• Online learning not only includes studying
the material online, but also participating
in online communications and discussions
with students and teachers.
• F2F learning includes lectures,
discussions, group work, presentations,
and interactions among students and
teachers.
Learning strategies
• Why do we apply these strategies?
• Research points out that students learn a
relatively limited part of knowledge from
instruction;
• Students learn better from asking
questions and giving answers themselves,
from learning by explaining themselves;
from learning by doing and from
exchanging views with others.
Learning strategies
• In our courses, you are not a passive
learner; instead you are the owner of your
learning processes;
• You are the one who controls what you
learn and how you learn;
• How do we apply these strategies?
• Students study the learning material
before the lectures including videos, ppts,
reading material, etc. All learning material
is presented online.
• During the lectures, you are requested to
ask questions, search for answers
yourselves or among groups, discuss with
peers, work on tasks and give
presentations yourselves.
Learning strategies
Learning strategies
• What are the advantages of these learning
strategies?
It is self-paced and self-directed.
• The prior knowledge levels of the students may
be very different.
• Depending on your own prior knowledge level,
you can choose to learn which part of the
content more in depth, you can choose to learn
faster or slower, so it is completely at your own
pace and according to your own needs.
Learning strategies
 It is flexible.
• Our higher education population is getting more
and more diverse.
• Many students prefer to have a flexible learning
mode that can cater for their need, either by
combining their study and work, or by combining
studying with different other activities.
• Students have different learning habits.
Depending on your learning habit, you can, for
example, learn it at any moment that you prefer,
during the day or during the evening; in any
place that you prefer
Learning strategies
 It is interactive.
• It facilitates and enhances interaction both
online and F2F.
• In the class, compared to lectures alone, we have a
big advantage that we will have a lot more time for
students to work in groups, ask questions, discuss
and interact with peers and teachers. And above all,
to apply knowledge in doing tasks.
• The classes are inquiry based, task based and
problem based. These approaches are essential for
the success of learning.
Learning strategies
• In the online learning environment,
discussions, interactions and
collaborations are also ensured through
discussion forums, announcements,
chats, online collaborative tools, etc.
Learning strategies
 It is constructive.
• You learn best when you can construct the
knowledge yourself. Through our learning
approaches, you will be able to learn
yourself, structure and construct
knowledge in an active and interactive
way.
Learning strategies
 It is digital.
• We encourage digital learning. In the
classes, you can bring your laptops,
iPads, etc. This is convenient and efficient.
• You can access the online platform,
search and open documents easily, have
internet resources in a fast manner, and
save and share with others in a click.
Learning strategies
• Enjoy this learning process
• Success in developing your research
competences as well as other key
competences to become an education
scientist or an education expert
