• In these text, Bro Paul depicts two contrasting
conditions-carnality and spirituality
• Carnality is the life of sin, spirituality is the life
of (holy Spirit) seed bearing
• The more we bear fruits, the quicker we
become like Christ
• And then, the more effective will the gifts of

• A. The word of wisdom
– A supernatural gifting that reveals the mind,
purpose, and the way of God to a pariticular
situation
• To expressly acquire this gift, delight in studying and

• What it is :
• A supernatural utterance from a christian through the
Holy Spirit
• Divine means of deep communication with God using
spiritual languages. I cor 14.2

• Expressed tongues are often times diffcult to

• Inspired interpretation of the message contained
in spoken unknown tongues
• In most cases, not word-for-word interpretation,
since spoken tongues are unintelligble
– Maybe shorter/longer than the actual spoken tongue
– In rare case, might be word for word interpretation.
• Hence, it depends on the level of spiritual
sensitivity of the spirit man of the interpreter

InterpretationofTonguesvsProphecy
• Both are inspired utterances from the Holy Spirit
• Tongues are prophecies provided there is faith-
based interpretation: I cor 14:5
• Hence, both fulfil the purpose of edification,
unlike speaking in tongues that edífies only the
speaker if not interpreted: I cor 14:5
• Prophecy cut across all section of spiritual
activities such as preaching,witnessing, singing,

Purpose of prophecy
• In old testament, prophecy is mostly foretelling,
• Howbeit with all the elements of edifying, exhorting and
comforting
• Prophecies of the patriachs of old
• For example Jacob prophecies: Genesis 49:1
• Moses Deut 28:1-end
• Micaiah Prophecy I kings 22:7-28
• Nathan Prophecy 2 Sam 12: 1-25

• An important tool for edifying, comforting and exhorting people. I cor

• Edifying-to build up or charge up

– I chronicles 12 : 17-18,How does this apply to today‘s church?
• Comforting- to sheer up or console

– Finding strength in the Lord in times of trouble is not what
human nature can tolerate;
– It entails allowing the Spirit of God to speak to/through you

translated “Charismata iamaton” in greek
• Holy Spirit-given ability to heal all form of
sickness-emotional, physical or spiritual
• Although all gifts of the Spirit require faith to be
effective,
• the gifts of healing perhaps require greater
measure of faith
• One can feign speaking in tongue, or prophesy,
but it is difficult to feign healing
