GOOGLE ANALYTICS
For Beginners - Part 1
GETTING STARTED
• You can add Google Analytics to any website.
• The Google Analytics tracking code collects user activity.
• You do this by adding Java Script Tracking Code to all the pages of a
website that you would like Google Analytics to track.
• You can find the tracking code in your admin settings ( See Next
Slides)

Step 3: Copy the Code and Paste this code into the HTML of every
page of your website before closing </head> tag.
STATS TO FOCUS ON:
Once you have implemented the tracking code and have Google
Analytics completely set up, there are three specific stats that we
suggest you focus on first.
1. Traffic Sources
2. Visits
3. Demographics
TRAFFIC SOURCES
• You will find Traffic Sources under the Acquisition tab.
• Click Overview to see all of the traffic sources coming to your site.
TRAFFIC SOURCES
There are three primary categories for traffic sources:
1. Direct: Visitors who typed your sites URL into the address bar.
2. Referring: Visitors who came from a link on another site.
3. Search Engine: Visitors who searched for something using a search engine and your
website was found in the search results.
Why is this Stat important?
▪ Knowing the sources of traffic to your website is extremely valuable as it can show you
where you should concentrate your marketing efforts to pull in more traffic.
▪ Knowing your traffic sources can also let you know if your online marketing efforts, such
as Pay Per Click, are paying off.
VISITS
• Visits can be found in the Behavior Section under the Site Content tab.
Click All Pages to see all of the pages of your site. They will be listed in
order from highest to lowest pageviews.
VISITS
Why is this Stat important?
▪ Analyzing your page visits can tell you which pages may need to be improved and which
pages are excelling.
▪ There may be an obvious reason why people are leaving a specific page of your site
immediately. By analyzing page visits you can focus on the pages that are receiving a high
bounce rate and make an effort to improve and monitor them.
▪ One way of improving the pages that are performing poorly is to mimic the pages that are
doing well on your site.
▪ Once changes are made you can monitor if the page visits improve.
DEMOGRAPHICS
The Demographics Stats can be found under the Audience Tab. Once you select
Demographics you can select Overview to get age and gender stats.
DEMOGRAPHICS
Why is this stat important?
▪ Demographics allows you to better understand your audience.
▪ When you better understand your audience you know what types of content they would
like to see.
▪ For example, if you know that the majority of your audience is in the 25-34 age range you
can tailor your social posts, blog posts and any other type of content, to have a focus on
topics that age range is interested in.
▪ Doing this creates a more engaging environment for your audience. Which increases the
chances of interaction between your business and potential clients.
